Giê-rê-mi-a 38

1 Bấy giờ, Sê-pha-tia, con Ma-than, Ghê-đa-lia, con Pha-su-rơ, Giu-can, con Sê-lê-mia, và Pha-su-rơ, con Manh-ki-gia, đã nghe những điều Giê-rê-mi giảng cho dân chúng.

And Shephatiah, the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah, the son of Pashur, and Jucal, the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur, the son of Malchiah, heard the words which Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying,

2 Ông từng nói: “Đây là điều Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: ‘Mỗi người ở lại trong Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ bị chết vì chiến tranh, đói kém, và dịch bệnh, nhưng những ai đầu hàng quân Canh-đê sẽ thoát chết. Chiến lợi phẩm của họ là sự sống. Họ sẽ sống!’

“Thus saith Jehovah: He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldaeans shall live, and he shall retain his life as a prey, and shall live.

3 Chúa Hằng Hữu còn phán: ‘Thành Giê-ru-sa-lem chắc chắn sẽ bị nạp vào tay đội quân của vua Ba-by-lôn, vua sẽ chiếm đóng thành.’”

Thus saith Jehovah: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.”

4 Vậy nên, những vị quan này đến gặp vua và thưa rằng: “Muôn tâu, người này phải chết! Những điều hắn nói đã làm giảm nhuệ khí chiến đấu của quân đội đang trấn thủ thành, cũng như gây hoang mang cho dân chúng. Hắn là một kẻ phản bội!”

Then said the princes to the king, “We beseech thee, let this man be put to death! for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them; for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but their hurt.”

5 Vua Sê-đê-kia liền đồng ý: “Được rồi. Hãy làm điều các ngươi muốn. Ta không thể ngăn chặn các ngươi được.”

Then Zedekiah the king said, “Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not one that can do anything in opposition to you.”

6 Vậy, các quan chức liền bắt Giê-rê-mi, dòng dây thả xuống một cái giếng sâu trong sân nhà tù. Giếng này vốn của Manh-ki-gia, một người trong hoàng tộc. Giếng không có nước, chỉ có bùn dày đặc dưới đáy, Giê-rê-mi bị lún trong giếng bùn đó.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah, the son of Hammelech, which was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but only mire; and Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

7 Tuy nhiên, Ê-bết Mê-lết, người Cút, là một thái giám, được tin Giê-rê-mi bị nhốt trong giếng. Lúc ấy vua đang ngồi trong tòa án tại Cổng Bên-gia-min,

And Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was then in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the dungeon; and the king was sitting in the gate of Benjamin.

8 Ê-bết Mê-lết vội vã đến tâu với vua:

Then Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,

9 “Muôn tâu chúa tôi, những người này đã làm điều đại ác khi bỏ Tiên tri Giê-rê-mi xuống giếng sâu! Ông ta chắc chết đói mất, vì tất cả bánh trong thành đã gần hết.”

“My lord the king! these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the dungeon; for he was already almost dead in his place for hunger; for there is no more bread in the city.”

10 Vua ra lệnh cho Ê-bết Mê-lết: “Hãy dẫn ba mươi người cùng đi với ngươi, và kéo Giê-rê-mi ra khỏi giếng trước khi người chết.”

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, saying, “Take along with thee thirty men from hence, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.”

11 Ê-bết Mê-lết đem ba mươi người theo mình và đến một phòng ở phía dưới kho báu, tại đó ông tìm giẻ và quần áo cũ. Ông mang những thứ này đến giếng rồi dùng dây dòng xuống cho Giê-rê-mi.

And Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the king's house under the store-room, and took from thence torn rags and worn-out rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 Ê-bết Mê-lết gọi Giê-rê-mi: “Hãy lấy giẻ và áo cũ quấn trên dây rồi lót dưới nách ông.” Khi Giê-rê-mi đã sẵn sàng,

And Ebedmelech, the Ethiopian, said to Jeremiah, put now these torn and worn-out rags under thy knuckles under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 họ liền kéo ông lên. Vậy, Giê-rê-mi được đưa về sân thị vệ—nhà tù hoàng cung—nơi ông bị giam trước đây.

And they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 Một ngày kia, Vua Sê-đê-kia sai người giải Giê-rê-mi đến cửa thứ ba của Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu. Vua nói: “Ta muốn hỏi ngươi một điều, ngươi đừng giấu giếm chi cả.”

And King Zedekiah sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entrance, which is in the house of Jehovah; and the king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask thee a question; hide nothing from me!”

15 Giê-rê-mi đáp: “Nếu tôi nói thật, vua sẽ giết tôi. Còn nếu tôi cho vua ý kiến, vua cũng chẳng nghe lời tôi.”

And Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “When I have told thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken to me.”

16 Vì thế, Vua Sê-đê-kia bí mật thề với Giê-rê-mi: “Thật như Chúa Hằng Hữu, là Đấng Sáng Tạo hằng sống của chúng ta, ta sẽ không giết ngươi, cũng không giao nạp ngươi cho những người muốn ngươi chết.”

Then King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in secret, saying, “As Jehovah liveth, who made for us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.”

17 Giê-rê-mi tâu cùng Sê-đê-kia: “Đây là điều Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời Vạn Quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, phán: ‘Nếu ngươi đầu hàng các tướng lãnh Ba-by-lôn thì ngươi và gia đình sẽ sống và thành này sẽ không bị thiêu hủy.

Then said Jeremiah to Zedekiah, “Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth to the chieftains of the king of Babylon, then shalt thou live; and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, thou and thine house.

18 Nhưng nếu ngươi không chịu đầu hàng, thì ngươi sẽ không thoát khỏi! Thành sẽ bị trao vào tay quân Ba-by-lôn, chúng sẽ đốt tan thành.’”

But if thou wilt not go forth to the chieftains of the king of Babylon, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldaeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.”

19 Vua Sê-đê-kia nói: “Nhưng ta sợ phải đầu hàng, vì người Ba-by-lôn sẽ giao ta cho bọn Do Thái, là dân đã đầu hàng quân Ba-by-lôn. Ai biết được chúng sẽ làm gì ta!”

And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Chaldaeans, lest I should be delivered into their hand, and they should mock me.”

20 Giê-rê-mi đáp: “Vua sẽ không bị giao cho bọn ấy nếu vua chọn vâng lời Chúa Hằng Hữu. Vua sẽ bảo toàn được mạng sống, và sẽ được an lành.

And Jeremiah said, “Thou shalt not be delivered up to them. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah in what I speak to thee; so shall it be well with thee, and thou shalt live.

21 Nhưng nếu vua không chịu đầu hàng thì đây là điều Chúa Hằng Hữu cho tôi biết:

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is what Jehovah hath revealed to me.

22 Tất cả phụ nữ còn sót lại trong cung vua sẽ bị nộp cho quan quân Ba-by-lôn. Rồi những phụ nữ sẽ chế giễu vua rằng: ‘Bạn bè thân tín của vua là thế! Họ đã lừa dối vua và thắng vua rồi. Khi chân vua lún sâu trong bùn, bè bạn liền phó mặc vua cho số phận!’

Behold, all the women that are left in the house of the king of Judah shall be brought forth to the chieftains of the king of Babylon, and shall say, 'Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee; thy feet are sunk in the mire; they go backward.'

23 Tất cả vợ và con vua sẽ bị nộp cho người Ba-by-lôn, và vua cũng không thể nào chạy thoát. Vua sẽ bị vua Ba-by-lôn bắt và thành này sẽ bị thiêu hủy.”

And all thy wives and thy children shall they bring out to the Chaldaeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but by the hand of the king of Babylon shalt thou be taken; and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.”

24 Rồi Sê-đê-kia dặn Giê-rê-mi: “Ngươi không được nói điều ngươi vừa nói với ta cho ai nghe cả, nếu không ngươi sẽ chết!

Then said Zedekiah to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 Nếu các quan nghe rằng ta nói chuyện với ngươi, thì chúng có thể bảo: ‘Hãy nói cho chúng ta nghe người và vua vừa nói gì. Nếu ngươi không nói cho chúng ta biết, chúng ta sẽ giết ngươi.’

But if the princes shall hear that I have talked with thee, and shall come to thee, and say to thee, 'Tell us, we pray thee, what thou hast said to the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; and what the king hath said to thee';

26 Nếu điều đó xảy ra, thì ngươi chỉ cần nói với chúng rằng ngươi cầu xin vua đừng đem ngươi về ngục Giô-na-than, kẻo ngươi sẽ chết tại đó.”

then shalt thou say to them, 'I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan to die there.'”

27 Quả nhiên, chẳng bao lâu các quan trong triều đến cật vấn Giê-rê-mi về vụ đó. Giê-rê-mi cứ theo lời vua dặn mà đối đáp với các quan. Các quan đành chịu, không tìm ra sự thật.

Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all those words which the king had commanded. And they said no more to him, for the matter was not known.

28 Giê-rê-mi bị giam cầm tại sân thị vệ cho đến ngày kinh thành Giê-ru-sa-lem bị chiếm đóng.

And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison to the day when Jerusalem was taken.
