1 Thưa anh chị em thân yêu, không có nhiều người trong anh chị em tự tôn mình làm thầy trong Hội Thánh, vì chúng ta biết hễ làm thầy thì phải chịu phán xét nghiêm khắc hơn.
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receiue the greater condemnation.
2 Chúng ta ai cũng lầm lỗi cả. Vì nếu chúng ta có thể kiểm soát được lưỡi mình, thì đó là người trọn vẹn và có thể kiềm chế bản thân trong mọi việc.
For in many things we sinne all. If any man sinne not in word, he is a perfect man, and able to bridle all the body.
3 Chỉ cần tra hàm thiếc vào miệng ngựa, chúng ta có thể sai khiến con ngựa to lớn tuân theo ý mình.
Beholde, we put bittes into the horses mouthes, that they should obey vs, and we turne about all their bodie.
4 Chỉ cần chiếc bánh lái nhỏ, người hoa tiêu có thể điều khiển cả chiếc tàu to lớn đi theo hướng mình muốn.
Behold also the shippes, which though they be so great, and are driuen of fierce windes, yet are they turned about with a very small rudder, whither soeuer the gouernour listeth.
5 Cũng vậy, cái lưỡi tuy rất nhỏ, nhưng có thể gây thiệt hại lớn lao. Một đốm lửa nhỏ có thể đốt cháy cả khu rừng rộng lớn.
Euen so the tongue is a litle member, and boasteth of great things: beholde, howe great a thing a litle fire kindleth.
6 Cái lưỡi cũng là một ngọn lửa. Nó chứa đầy nọc độc, đầu độc cả thân thể. Nó đã bị lửa địa ngục đốt cháy, và sẽ thiêu đốt cả cuộc sống, làm hư hoại con người. (Geenna g1067)
And the tongue is fire, yea, a worlde of wickednesse: so is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. (Geenna g1067)
7 Con người đã chế ngự và có thể chế ngự mọi loài muông thú, chim chóc, mọi loài bò sát và cá dưới biển,
For the whole nature of beasts, and of birds, and of creeping things, and things of the sea is tamed, and hath bene tamed of the nature of man.
8 nhưng chưa ai chế ngự được miệng lưỡi. Lúc nào nó cũng sẵn sàng tuôn ra những chất độc giết người.
But the tongue can no man tame. It is an vnruly euill, full of deadly poyson.
9 Chúng ta dùng lưỡi ca tụng Chúa là Cha chúng ta, lại dùng nó để chửi rủa người đồng loại đã được tạo nên giống như Đức Chúa Trời.
Therewith blesse we God euen the Father, and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Thưa anh chị em, từ một miệng mà phát ra lời ca tụng lẫn lời nguyền rủa như thế, thật trái lẽ.
Out of one mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing: my brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Một ngọn suối có thể vừa chảy nước ngọt vừa tuôn nước đắng không?
Doeth a fountaine send forth at one place sweete water and bitter?
12 Cây vả có thể sinh trái ô-liu hay cây nho sinh trái vả không? Không đâu, anh chị em cũng không thể nào múc nước ngọt trong hồ nước mặn được.
Can ye figge tree, my brethren, bring forth oliues, either a vine figges? so can no fountaine make both salt water and sweete.
13 Nếu anh chị em khôn ngoan sáng suốt, phải sống một đời hiền hòa đạo đức, vì khôn ngoan chân chính nẩy sinh ra việc lành.
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew by good conuersation his workes in meekenesse of wisdome.
14 Nhưng nếu ai khoe mình khôn ngoan mà còn ganh tị, hiềm khích, ích kỷ, là nói dối trắng trợn.
But if ye haue bitter enuying and strife in your hearts, reioyce not, neither be liars against the trueth.
15 Đó không phải là khôn ngoan thiên thượng, mà chỉ là khôn ngoan thế gian, trần tục, khôn ngoan của ác quỷ.
This wisedome descendeth not from aboue, but is earthly, sensuall, and deuilish.
16 Vì nơi nào có ganh ghét và tranh giành, nơi đó đầy hỗn loạn và mọi thứ xấu xa.
For where enuying and strife is, there is sedition, and all maner of euill workes.
17 Nhưng khôn ngoan thiên thượng trước hết là trong sạch, lại hòa nhã, nhẫn nhục, nhân từ, làm nhiều việc lành, không thiên kiến, không giả dối.
But the wisedome that is from aboue, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easie to be intreated, full of mercie and good fruites, without iudging, and without hipocrisie.
18 Người hòa giải gieo hạt giống hòa bình sẽ gặt bông trái công chính.
And the fruite of righteousnesse is sowen in peace, of them that make peace.
