1 Xuống đến Ai Cập, Giô-sép bị các lái buôn A-rập bán cho Phô-ti-pha, viên quan chỉ huy đoàn thị vệ của Pha-ra-ôn, vua Ai Cập.
Now, Joseph, was taken down to Egypt, —and Potiphar, courtier of Pharaoh, chief of the royal executioners, an Egyptian bought him, at the hand of the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down thither.
2 Chúa Hằng Hữu ở với Giô-sép, phù hộ người trong mọi công việc tại nhà chủ Ai Cập, nên người làm gì cũng thành công tốt đẹp.
And it came to pass that Yahweh, was with Joseph, so that he became a prosperous man, —and was in the house of his lord the Egyptian.
3 Phô-ti-pha đã nhìn nhận rằng Chúa Hằng Hữu phù hộ Giô-sép cách đặc biệt,
And his lord saw, that, Yahweh, was with him—and that whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper in his hand.
4 nên ông nể vì, trọng dụng người, và cử người làm quản gia coi sóc mọi việc trong nhà.
So Joseph found favour in his eyes and waited upon him, —and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had, gave he into his hand.
5 Từ ngày ông giao cho Giô-sép quản trị nhà cửa và mọi tài sản trong nhà, Chúa Hằng Hữu vì Giô-sép ban phước lành cho gia đình, súc vật, và tài sản của Phô-ti-pha,
And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, that Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian, for Joseph’s sake, —yea it came to pass, that the blessing of Yahweh, was with all that he had, in the house and in the field;
6 vì thế ông giao trọn mọi việc cho Giô-sép, không cần bận tâm đến việc nhà nữa, ông chỉ còn chọn món ăn thích khẩu mà thôi! Giô-sép là một thanh niên rất đẹp trai,
so that he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and took note with him of nothing, save only the bread which, he himself, was eating. And so it was that Joseph was comely in form and comely in countenance.
7 khiến vợ của Phô-ti-pha mê mẫn. Bà dụ: “Hãy đến và nằm với tôi.”
And it came to pass after these things, that his lord’s wife lifted up her eyes unto Joseph, —and she said—Come! lie with me.
8 Nhưng Giô-sép cự tuyệt: “Thưa bà, ông chủ đã ủy quyền cho tôi quản lý mọi người, mọi vật trong nhà,
And he refused and said unto his lord’s wife, Lo! my lord, taketh no note with me as to what is in the house, —but, all that pertaineth to him, hath he delivered into my hand:
9 và bằng lòng giao hết cho tôi, chỉ trừ một mình bà, vì là vợ của chủ. Tôi đâu dám phạm tội ác này và làm buồn lòng Đức Chúa Trời.”
There is no one greater in this house than I, neither hath he withheld from me anything, save only thyself in that thou, art his wife, —how, then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10 Ngày này qua ngày khác, bà chủ cứ liên tiếp quyến rũ, nhưng Giô-sép một mực chối từ.
And it came to pass, that although she Spake unto Joseph day after day, yet hearkened he not unto her to lie beside her to be with her.
11 Một hôm, thấy Giô-sép làm việc trong nhà mà chung quanh chẳng có ai.
And it came to pass, when, on a certain day, he went into the house to attend to his business, —and there was no man of the household, there in the house,
12 Bà chủ nắm áo kéo chàng lại và đòi ăn nằm. Khi Giô-sép giật áo lại không được, đành bỏ luôn chiếc áo và chạy trốn ra khỏi nhà.
that she caught him by his garment, saying—Come! lie with me. Then left he his garment in her hand, and fled and gat forth outside,
13 Còn lại một mình, bẽ mặt,
And it came to pass when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, —and fled forth outside,
14 bà chủ nham hiểm lại hô hoán lên để vu vạ: “Bọn gia nhân đâu? Ra xem! Tên nô lệ người Hê-bơ-rơ dám lẻn vào phòng định hãm hiếp tao.
that she cried out to the men of her house and spake to them, saying, Look ye! he hath brought in to us a Hebrew man to insult us, —He came in unto me, to lie with me, so I cried out with a loud voice.
15 Tao tri hô lên, nên nó khiếp sợ chạy trốn và bỏ cả áo lại đây này.”
And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted high my voice, and cried out, then left he his garment beside me, and fled and gat forth outside.
16 Giữ chiếc áo làm tang vật, bà chủ đợi chồng về,
So she laid by his garment beside her, —until his lord should come into his house,
17 vu cáo: “Tên nô lệ người Hê-bơ-rơ ông mua về đó thật là phản trắc. Nó định hãm hiếp tôi.
Then spake she unto him, according to these words, saying, —He hath been in unto me—the Hebrew servant whom thou didst bring in to us—to insult me.
18 Tôi kêu cứu; nó mới khiếp sợ, chạy trốn, và bỏ lại cái áo!”
And it came to pass when I lifted high my voice and cried out, then left he his garment beside me, and fled outside.
19 Phô-ti-pha tức giận khi nghe vợ kể.
And it came to pass, when his lord heard the words of his wife which she spake unto him saying, According to these words, hath thy servant done to me, Then was kindled his anger.
20 Ông ra lệnh tống giam Giô-sép và xiềng lại trong ngục của hoàng triều.
So Joseph’s lord took him and delivered him up to the prison: the place where, the prisoners of the king, were imprisoned, —so he was there, in the prison.
21 Dù vậy, Chúa Hằng Hữu vẫn ở với Giô-sép trong ngục và khiến chàng được giám ngục quý mến.
And it came to pass that, Yahweh, was with Joseph, and extended unto him lovingkindness, —and gave him his favour in the eyes of the chief of the prison.
22 Chẳng bao lâu, giám ngục ủy quyền cho Giô-sép quản lý cả lao xá và coi sóc tất cả phạm nhân.
So the chief of the prison delivered up, into Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison, —and of all that was doing there, he, was the doer.
23 Từ ngày ấy, giám ngục khỏi bận tâm, vì Giô-sép quản trị mọi việc cách tốt đẹp hoàn hảo. Chúa Hằng Hữu cho bất cứ việc gì Giô-sép bắt tay vào cũng đều thành công mỹ mãn.
After nothing, was the chief of the prison looking, of whatever was in his hand, —in that Yahweh, was with him, and whatsoever, he was doing, Yahweh, was causing to prosper.
