Sáng Thế 32
1 Gia-cốp và cả gia đình tiếp tục cuộc hành trình, thiên sứ của Đức Chúa Trời đến gặp họ.
But Iacob went forth on his iourney. And the angells of God came and mett him.
2 Khi Gia-cốp thấy họ, ông reo mừng: “Đức Chúa Trời ngự tại nơi này!” Rồi ông gọi chỗ ấy là Ma-ha-na-im.
And when Iacob sawe them he sayde: this is godes hoost: and called the name of that same place Mahanaim.
3 Gia-cốp sai người lên tận núi Sê-i-rơ trong xứ Ê-đôm, tìm Ê-sau
Iacob sente meessengers before him to Esau his brother vnto the lande of Seir and the felde of Edom.
4 và thưa rằng: “Các ngươi hãy thưa với Ê-sau, chúa ta rằng Gia-cốp, đầy tớ chúa, có nói: Tôi đã ngụ tại nhà cậu La-ban cho đến ngày nay.
And he comaunded them saynge: se that ye speake after this maner to my lorde Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayth thus. I haue sogerned ad bene a straunger with Laban vnto this tyme:
5 Tôi có nhiều tôi trai, tớ gái, bò, lừa, và các bầy gia súc. Nay chúng tôi sắp về tới quê nhà, xin kính tin anh rõ, mong anh vui lòng chấp thuận.”
and haue gotten oxen asses and shepe menservauntes and wemanseruauntes and haue sent to shewe it mi lorde that I may fynde grace in thy syghte.
6 Gia nhân quay về báo Gia-cốp: “Chúng tôi đã tìm gặp Ê-sau. Ông ấy đang đem một lực lượng 400 người đến đón chủ.”
And the messengers came agayne to Iacob sainge: we came vnto thi brother Esau and he cometh ageynst the and. iiij. hundred men with hi.
7 Gia-cốp được tin; ông phập phồng lo sợ. Để đề phòng mọi bất trắc, ông chia gia nhân làm hai toán, cho mỗi toán coi sóc một nửa số súc vật.
Than was Iacob greatlye afrayde and wist not which waye to turne him selfe and devyded the people that was with him and the shepe oxen and camels in to. ij. companies
8 Ông tự bảo: “Nếu anh ta, Ê-sau, tấn công toán này, toán kia có thể chạy thoát.”
and sayde: Yf Esau come to the one parte and smyte it the other may saue it selfe.
9 Gia-cốp cầu nguyện: “Lạy Đức Chúa Trời của Áp-ra-ham, ông nội con, và của Y-sác, Chúa Hằng Hữu, cha con! Chúa đã phán: ‘Con hãy trở về quê hương, sống với bà con thân thích. Ta sẽ hậu đãi con.’
And Iacob sayde: O god of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac: LORde which saydest vnto me returne vnto thy cuntre and to thy kynrede and I will deall wel with the.
10 Thật ra, con chẳng xứng đáng gì, nhưng Chúa đã thương xót và giữ đúng tất cả lời Ngài hứa. Khi con ra đi, và khi qua sông Giô-đan chỉ có hai bàn tay trắng; mà nay con có hai đoàn người này với bao nhiêu tài sản.
I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercyes and treuth which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunte. For with my staf came I over this Iordane and now haue Igoten. ij. droves
11 Con cầu xin Chúa Hằng Hữu giải thoát con khỏi tay Ê-sau, anh con. Vì con sợ anh ấy đến đánh giết con và vợ con con.
Delyver me from the handes of my brother Esau for I feare him: lest he will come and smyte the mother with the childeru.
12 Chúa đã hứa: ‘Chắc chắn Ta sẽ hậu đãi con và cho dòng dõi con đông như cát biển, không ai đếm được.’”
Thou saydest that thou woldest surely do me good and woldest make mi seed as the sonde of the see which can not be nombred for multitude.
13 Tối hôm ấy, Gia-cốp ở lại Ma-ha-na-im và chọn các món quà để biếu Ê-sau.
And he taried there that same nyghte and toke of that which came to hande a preasent vnto Esau his brother:
14 Quà tặng gồm có: 200 dê cái, 20 dê đực, 200 chiên cái, 20 chiên đực,
ij hundred she gootes ad xx he gootes: ij hundred shepe and xx rammes:
15 30 lạc đà cái, một đàn lạc đà con, 40 bò cái, 10 bò đực, 20 lừa cái, và 10 lừa đực.
thyrtye mylch camels with their coltes: xl kyne ad x bulles: xx she asses ad foles
16 Gia-cốp giao các bầy súc vật cho đám đầy tớ, mỗi người coi sóc một bầy, và căn dặn họ: “Các anh đi trước và giữ một khoảng cách giữa các bầy súc vật.”
and delyuered them vnto his seruauntes euery drooue by them selues ad sayde vnto them: goo forth before me and put a space betwyxte euery drooue.
17 Gia-cốp cũng dặn người dẫn bầy thứ nhất: “Khi Ê-sau gặp anh và hỏi: ‘Chủ anh là ai? Anh đi về đâu? Bầy vật này thuộc về ai?’
And he comaunded the formest sayngeWhe Esau my brother meteth the ad axeth the saynge: whose seruaute art thou and whither goost thou and whose ar these that goo before ye:
18 Anh cứ đáp: ‘Bầy vật này của Gia-cốp, đầy tớ ngài, xin kính tặng ngài Ê-sau. Gia-cốp đi sau, cũng sắp đến.’”
thou shalt say they be thy seruaunte Iacobs and are a present sent vnto my lorde Esau and beholde he him selfe cometh after vs.
19 Gia-cốp lại dặn các đầy tớ chăn bầy khác cũng nói với Ê-sau những lời đó,
And so comaunded he the seconde ad euen so the thirde and lykewyse all that folowed the drooues sainge of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau whe ye mete him
20 và thêm: “Này, Gia-cốp, đầy tớ ngài, đang theo sau chúng tôi.” Gia-cốp tự nhủ: “Ta gửi các tặng phẩm này trước để làm Ê-sau nguôi giận. Mong rằng nhờ đó, Ê-sau sẽ tiếp ta tử tế khi gặp mặt.”
ad saye more ouer. Beholde thy seruaunte Iacob cometh after vs for he sayde. I will pease his wrath with the present yt goth before me and afterward I will see him myself so peradventure he will receaue me to grace.
21 Gửi các lễ vật đi trước, tối hôm ấy, Gia-cốp ở lại trong trại.
So went the preset before him ad he taried all that nyghte in the tente
22 Giữa đêm khuya, Gia-cốp thức dậy, đưa hai vợ, hai nữ tì, và mười một con trai qua suối Gia-bốc.
ad rose vp the same nyghte ad toke his. ij. wyves and his. ij. maydens and his. xi. sonnes and went ouer the foorde Iabok.
23 Sau khi ông đã đưa họ qua sông, ông gửi tất cả tài sản còn lại qua sông.
And he toke them ad sent the ouer the ryuer ad sent ouer that he had
24 Đang một thân một mình, Gia-cốp bỗng thấy một người xuất hiện và đấu vật với mình cho đến rạng đông.
ad taried behinde him selfe alone. And there wrastled a man with him vnto the breakynge of the daye.
25 Thấy mình không thắng được, Người ấy liền đập vào hông của Gia-cốp, làm trặc xương đùi,
And when he sawe that he coude not prevayle agaynst him he smote hi vnder the thye and the senowe of Iacobs thy shranke as he wrastled with him.
26 và bảo rằng: “Trời đã sáng, hãy để Ta đi.” Gia-cốp đáp: “Nếu Ngài không ban phước lành cho con, con không để Ngài đi đâu.”
And he sayde: let me goo for the daye breaketh. And he sayde: I will not lett the goo excepte thou blesse me.
27 Người ấy hỏi: “Tên con là gì?” Đáp rằng: “Gia-cốp.”
And he sayde vnto him: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob.
28 Người liền bảo: “Tên con không phải là Gia-cốp nữa nhưng sẽ đổi lại là Ít-ra-ên, vì con đã tranh đấu với Đức Chúa Trời và người, và con đều thắng cả.”
And he sayde: thou shalt be called Iacob nomore but Israell. For thou hast wrastled with God and with men ad hast preuayled.
29 Gia-cốp thưa: “Xin cho con biết tên Ngài.” Người ấy đáp: “Con hỏi tên Ta làm gì?” Rồi Người ban phước lành cho Gia-cốp tại đó.
And Iacob asked him sainge tell me thi name. And he sayde wherfore dost thou aske after my name? and he blessed him there.
30 Gia-cốp gọi địa điểm này là Phê-niên (có nghĩa là “Đức Chúa Trời hiện diện”) và giải thích rằng ông đã đối diện cùng Đức Chúa Trời mà vẫn còn sống.
And Iacob called the name of the place Peniel for I haue sene God face to face and yet is my lyfe reserved.
31 Gia-cốp khập khễnh bước ra khỏi Phê-ni-ên lúc trời rạng đông.
And as he went ouer Peniel the sonne rose vpon him and he halted vpon his thye:
32 Về sau, người Ít-ra-ên không bao giờ ăn gân đùi của các thú vật vì Gia-cốp đã bị trặc xương đùi trong cuộc lộn vật này.
wherfore the childern of Israell eate not of the senow that shrancke vnder the thye vnto this daye: because that he smote Iacob vnder the thye in the senow that shroncke.
