Giảng Sư 1
1 Lời của Người Truyền Đạo, con Vua Đa-vít, cai trị tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 Người Truyền Đạo nói: “Mọi thứ đều vô nghĩa! Hoàn toàn vô nghĩa!”
All is to no purpose, said the Preacher, all the ways of man are to no purpose.
3 Con người làm lụng khó nhọc dưới ánh mặt trời để hưởng được gì?
What is a man profited by all his work which he does under the sun?
4 Thế hệ đến và thế hệ đi, nhưng trái đất vẫn không bao giờ thay đổi.
One generation goes and another comes; but the earth is for ever.
5 Mặt trời mọc và mặt trời lặn, xoay vần không dứt.
The sun comes up and the sun goes down, and goes quickly back to the place where he came up.
6 Gió thổi hướng nam rồi thổi hướng bắc. Quanh đi vòng lại, gió thổi không ngừng.
The wind goes to the south, turning back again to the north; circling round for ever.
7 Sông đổ mãi vào biển nhưng biển chẳng hề đầy. Nước trở về các sông và lại đổ vào biển.
All the rivers go down to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the rivers go, there they go again.
8 Vạn vật mỏi mòn không tả xiết. Chúng ta thấy nhiều nhưng vẫn không hài lòng. Chúng ta nghe nhiều nhưng vẫn không mãn nguyện.
All things are full of weariness; man may not give their story: the eye has never enough of its seeing, or the ear of its hearing.
9 Việc gì đã xảy ra, sẽ còn tái diễn. Điều gì làm ngày nay, người xưa cũng đã làm rồi. Chẳng có gì mới dưới mặt trời.
That which has been, is that which is to be, and that which has been done, is that which will be done, and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 Thỉnh thoảng có người nói: “Có vài điều mới!” Nhưng thật ra nó đã có; không có gì thật sự mới.
Is there anything of which men say, See, this is new? It has been in the old time which was before us.
11 Chúng ta không nhớ những việc xảy ra thời trước, và trong thế hệ mai sau, cũng chẳng ai hồi tưởng việc chúng ta làm hôm nay.
There is no memory of those who have gone before, and of those who come after there will be no memory for those who are still to come after them.
12 Tôi, Người Truyền Đạo, là vua của Ít-ra-ên tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Tôi chuyên tâm tìm hiểu và dùng sự khôn ngoan để khảo sát những sự việc dưới trời. Tôi sớm khám phá rằng Đức Chúa Trời đã giao mọi việc lao khổ cho loài người.
And I gave my heart to searching out in wisdom all things which are done under heaven: it is a hard thing which God has put on the sons of men to do.
14 Tôi nhận thấy mọi công trình dưới mặt trời, và thật, tất cả đều vô nghĩa—như đuổi theo luồng gió.
I have seen all the works which are done under the sun; all is to no purpose, and desire for wind.
15 Vật gì đã bị cong vẹo không thể uốn thẳng được? Đã thiếu hụt, làm sao có thể đếm được?
That which is bent may not be made straight, and that which is not there may not be numbered.
16 Tôi tự nhủ: “Kìa, tôi khôn ngoan hơn các vị vua cai trị tại Giê-ru-sa-lem trước tôi. Tôi có kiến thức và sự hiểu biết hơn bất cứ ai trong họ.”
I said to my heart, See, I have become great and am increased in wisdom more than any who were before me in Jerusalem — yes, my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge.
17 Vậy, tôi cố gắng học hỏi từ sự khôn ngoan đến sự điên rồ và dại dột. Nhưng qua kinh nghiệm, tôi phải nhìn nhận điều đó cũng chẳng khác gì đuổi theo luồng gió.
And I gave my heart to getting knowledge of wisdom, and of the ways of the foolish. And I saw that this again was desire for wind.
18 Càng khôn ngoan càng nhiều sầu khổ. Càng hiểu biết càng nhiều buồn đau.
Because in much wisdom is much grief, and increase of knowledge is increase of sorrow.
