I Sa-mu-ên 24
1 Sau khi đánh đuổi quân Phi-li-tin trở về, Sau-lơ được tin Đa-vít đang ở hoang mạc Ên-ghê-đi.
And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told to him, saying, Behold, David [is] in the wilderness of En-gedi.
2 Ông dẫn theo 3.000 quân tinh nhuệ nhất Ít-ra-ên, đến tảng đá dê rừng, tìm Đa-vít và thuộc hạ.
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
3 Đến một nơi có chuồng chiên, Sau-lơ thấy một cái hang nên vào đó đi vệ sinh. Lúc ấy Đa-vít cùng các thuộc hạ đang ẩn nấp trong góc hang.
And he came to the sheep-cotes by the way, where [was] a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
4 Một người thì thầm với Đa-vít: “Hôm nay là ngày Chúa Hằng Hữu có nói trước với ông: ‘Ta sẽ giao kẻ thù vào tay con, con xử nó ra sao tùy ý.’” Đa-vít nhẹ nhàng đứng dậy, đến cắt vạt áo ngoài của Sau-lơ.
And the men of David said to him, Behold the day of which the LORD said to thee, Behold, I will deliver thy enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. Then David arose, and privately cut off the skirt of Saul's robe.
5 Nhưng ngay sau đó, Đa-vít tự trách về việc này.
And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
6 Ông nói với thuộc hạ: “Chúa Hằng Hữu biết điều ta đã không làm với vua ta. Chúa Hằng Hữu cấm ta ra tay ám hại vua, là người được Chúa Hằng Hữu xức dầu, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã lựa chọn người.”
And he said to his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he [is] the anointed of the LORD.
7 Những lời Đa-vít thuyết phục đám thuộc hạ, làm họ không còn ý định giết Sau-lơ nữa. Sau-lơ ra khỏi hang tiếp tục lên đường,
So David restrained his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose out of the cave, and went on [his] way.
8 Đa-vít ra theo, lớn tiếng gọi: “Thưa vua!” Sau-lơ quay lại nhìn, Đa-vít cung kính cúi gập người xuống.
David also rose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
9 Ông nói lớn với Sau-lơ: “Tại sao vua nghe lời dân chúng nói rằng, tôi muốn hại vua?
And David said to Saul, Why hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
10 Ngày hôm nay, chính vua thấy rõ. Vì lúc nãy trong hang, Chúa Hằng Hữu có giao mạng vua vào tay tôi; có người bảo tôi sát hại, nhưng tôi không nỡ, vì tự nghĩ: ‘Ta không được giết vua, vì là người được Chúa Hằng Hữu xức dầu.’
Behold, this day thy eyes have seen how the LORD hath delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave; and [some] bade [me] kill thee: but [my eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he [is] the LORD'S anointed.
11 Cha thấy không, con có vạt áo của cha trong tay đây này. Con cắt vạt áo chứ không giết cha. Như thế đủ cho cha thấy rằng con không định hại vua, phản chủ. Con không có lỗi gì cả, trong khi cha lại tìm mọi cách giết con!
Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that [there is] neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
12 Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu xét xử cha và con. Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ trừng phạt cha vì những gì cha đã làm với con, còn con sẽ không bao giờ hại cha.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but my hand shall not be upon thee.
13 Người xưa có nói: ‘Từ người ác sẽ ra điều ác.’ Xin cha tin chắc rằng con sẽ không bao giờ hại cha.
As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but my hand shall not be upon thee.
14 Là vua của Ít-ra-ên mà lại đem quân đuổi bắt một con chó chết, một con bọ chét hay sao?
After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea?
15 Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu phân xử giữa cha với con. Xin Ngài biện hộ và giải cứu con khỏi tay cha!”
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.
16 Nghe xong, Sau-lơ hỏi: “Có phải con đó không, Đa-vít?” Và vua khóc lớn tiếng.
And it came to pass when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, [Is] this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
17 Vua nói với Đa-vít: “Con tốt hơn cha, vì con lấy thiện trả ác.
And he said to David, thou [art] more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded thee with evil.
18 Hôm nay con đã lấy lòng nhân đãi cha, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu nạp cha vào tay con mà con không giết.
And thou hast showed this day how thou hast dealt with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.
19 Không ai bắt được kẻ thù rồi thả cho đi, nhưng hôm nay con đã làm như thế với cha. Xin Chúa Hằng Hữu ân thưởng cho con.
For if a man findeth his enemy, will he let him go away well? wherefore the LORD reward thee with good, for what thou hast done to me this day.
20 Ta biết chắc rồi đây con sẽ làm vua, và vương quốc Ít-ra-ên sẽ được lập vững bền trong tay con.
And now, behold, I know well that thou wilt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in thy hand.
21 Chỉ xin con nhân danh Chúa Hằng Hữu thề sẽ không tuyệt diệt con cháu của cha, làm cho cha không còn người mang danh, nối dõi!”
Swear now therefore to me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.
22 Vậy Đa-vít lập lời thề với Sau-lơ. Rồi Sau-lơ trở về hoàng cung, còn Đa-vít và thuộc hạ lại trở về chỗ ẩn trú.
And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men repaired to the hold.
