I Sa-mu-ên 17
1 Người Phi-li-tin tập họp quân đội tại Sô-cô, thuộc đất Giu-đa, để đánh Ít-ra-ên. Họ kéo đến đóng ở Ê-phe Đa-nhim, giữa Sô-cô và A-xê-ca.
And the Philistines gathered together their camps to battle, and they gathered themselves together at Sochoh, which belongeth to Judah; and they encamped between Sochoh and 'Azekah, at Ephess-dammim.
2 Sau-lơ kiểm số binh lính Ít-ra-ên tại thung lũng Ê-la.
And Saul and the men of Israel gathered themselves together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and put themselves in battle-array opposite to the Philistines.
3 Người Phi-li-tin dàn quân bên sườn núi này, Ít-ra-ên bên sườn núi kia. Hai bên cách nhau một thung lũng.
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and the Israelites stood on a mountain on the other side: and the valley was between them.
4 Gô-li-át, một dũng sĩ Phi-li-tin ở đất Gát, từ phía quân Phi-li-tin đi ra, đối diện với quân Ít-ra-ên. Gô-li-át cao khoảng 3 mét!
And there went out the champion out of the camp of the Philistines, Goliath of Gath was his name, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5 Người đội mũ đồng, mặc áo giáp đồng nặng ngót 57 ký.
And he had a helmet of copper upon his head, and he was clothed with a scaly coat of mail; and the weight of the coat of mail was five thousand shekels of copper.
6 Chân người quấn xà cạp, vai đeo một cây lao đồng.
And he had greaves of copper upon his legs, and a javelin of copper between his shoulders.
7 Mũi giáo của người ấy bằng sắt nặng 6,8 ký, cán giáo lớn bằng trục cuốn chỉ của máy dệt. Đi trước Gô-li-át có một người mang khiên.
And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and the blade of his spear [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and the shield-bearer was walking before him.
8 Gô-li-át hướng về phía quân Ít-ra-ên la lớn: “Tại sao phải bày binh bố trận? Ta là dũng sĩ Phi-li-tin, còn các ngươi chỉ là đầy tớ của Sau-lơ. Hãy chọn một người ra đấu với ta!
And he stood and calleth unto the arrays of Israel, and said unto them, Why will ye come out to put yourselves in battle-array? Behold: I am the Philistine, and ye are servants to Saul! select for yourselves one man, and let him come down to me;
9 Nếu người ấy giết được ta, chúng ta sẽ làm nô lệ cho các ngươi. Nhưng nếu ta giết được hắn, các ngươi phải làm nô lệ cho chúng ta.
If he be able to fight with me, and he kill me, then will we be unto you as servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be unto us as servants, and ye shall serve us.
10 Ta thách quân Ít-ra-ên đó! Hãy chọn một người ra đấu với ta!”
And the Philistine said, I have defied the arrays of Israel this day; give me a man, and let us fight together.
11 Sau-lơ và quân Ít-ra-ên nghe thế đều kinh hãi.
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were disheartened, and became greatly afraid.
12 Bấy giờ Đa-vít, con một người tên Gie-sê, người ở Ê-phơ-rát thuộc Bết-lê-hem đất Giu-đa, lúc ấy Gie-sê đã già, ông có tám con trai.
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lechem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was old in the days of Saul, belonging to the persons [of high esteem].
13 Ba người con lớn của Gie-sê là Ê-li-áp, A-bi-na-đáp, và Sam-ma đều tham gia trong quân đội của Sau-lơ chống lại quân Phi-li-tin.
And the three eldest sons of Jesse were gone following Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that were gone to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and the next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14 Đa-vít là con trai út. Ba người anh lớn của Đa-vít ở trong đội quân của Sau-lơ,
And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
15 còn Đa-vít trông coi đàn chiên của cha mình ở Bết-lê-hem, nên thường đi đi về về.
But David kept going and returning from Saul to feed his father's flocks at Beth-lechem.
16 Trong bốn mươi ngày liên tiếp, mỗi sáng và mỗi chiều, dũng sĩ Phi-li-tin cứ ra oai như vậy trước quân Ít-ra-ên.
And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17 Một hôm, Gie-sê nói với Đa-vít: “Hãy lấy một giỏ đầy hột rang với mười ổ bánh này đem cho các anh con.
And Jesse said unto David his son, Take, I pray thee, for thy brothers an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brothers;
18 Cũng nhớ lấy mười miếng phó-mát đem cho viên chỉ huy. Để ý xem các anh con có mạnh không và đem về bằng chứng cho cha thấy chúng nó được an toàn.”
And these ten cheeses shalt thou bring unto the captain of the thousand, and inquire of thy brothers how they fare, and take away their pledge.
19 Lúc đó Sau-lơ, các anh Đa-vít, và quân đội Ít-ra-ên đang đóng ở thung lũng Ê-la để đương đầu với quân Phi-li-tin.
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
20 Đa-vít giao bầy chiên lại cho một người khác giữ, sáng hôm sau lên đường thật sớm, mang theo các thức ăn như Gie-sê đã căn dặn. Vừa đến trại, Đa-vít thấy quân Ít-ra-ên kéo ra dàn trận với tiếng hò reo vang dậy.
And David rose up early in the morning, and gave up the flocks to a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the entrenchment, as the host was going forth in battle-array, and shouted the battle-cry.
21 Quân Phi-li-tin cũng kéo ra, quân đội hai bên dàn trận đối nhau.
And the Israelites and the Philistines put themselves in battle-array, army against army.
22 Đa-vít nhờ một người giữ các thức ăn mang theo, rồi chạy vào đoàn quân gặp các anh mình.
And David left the articles which he had on him in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran into the array, and came and asked of his brothers after their welfare.
23 Khi đang nói chuyện với các anh, Đa-vít thấy Gô-li-át, quê ở Gát, từ hàng ngũ Phi-li-tin bước ra. Đa-vít nghe rõ hắn lên giọng thách thức như những lần trước.
And as he was speaking with them, behold, there came up the champion, Goliath the Philistine, by name, of Gath, out of the battle-arrays of the Philistines, and spoke in accordance with these same words: and David heard it.
24 Vừa thấy Gô-li-át, quân Ít-ra-ên khiếp sợ, ùa nhau bỏ chạy.
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from before him, and were greatly afraid.
25 Họ bảo nhau: “Thấy người ấy thách đố và nhục mạ dân ta chưa? Nghe nói vua hứa trọng thưởng cho ai giết được nó, lại còn gả công chúa cho, và cho cả nhà người ấy được miễn sưu thuế!”
And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is coming forth? for to defy Israel is he coming forth; and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, —him will the king enrich with great riches, and his daughter will he give him, and his father's house will he make free in Israel.
26 Đa-vít hỏi người lính đứng cạnh: “Người giết được người Phi-li-tin này và cất bỏ sự sỉ nhục khỏi Ít-ra-ên sẽ được thưởng gì? Người Phi-li-tin vô đạo này là ai sao dám coi thường quân đội của Đức Chúa Trời Hằng Sống?”
And David said to the men that stood by him, thus, What shall be done to the man that may smite yon Philistine, and take away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the arrays of the living God?
27 Những người lính lập lại những lời trên với Đa-vít. Họ nói: “Phải, ai giết nó sẽ được thưởng như thế.”
And the people spoke to him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that may smite him.
28 Ê-li-áp, anh cả của Đa-vít, nghe em nói chuyện như thế, nổi giận, mắng: “Mày đến đây làm gì? Đàn chiên bỏ cho ai trông? Tao biết mày là đứa tự phụ, ranh mãnh. Mày chỉ muốn đến xem đánh nhau chứ gì?”
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he was speaking unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why didst thou come down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy presumption, and the wickedness of thy heart; for in order to see the battle art thou come down.
29 Đa-vít đáp: “Em có làm gì đâu, chỉ hỏi một câu thôi.”
And David said, What have I now done? It is nothing but a word.
30 Nói xong, Đa-vít đến hỏi một người khác cùng một câu như trước, và cũng được trả lời như thế.
And he turned from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner: and the people made him again a reply after the former manner.
31 Có người nghe Đa-vít hỏi chuyện, đem tâu trình cho Vua Sau-lơ, rồi vua cho đòi Đa-vít đến.
And the words which David had spoken were heard, and they told them in the presence of Saul, who sent for him.
32 Đa-vít nói với Sau-lơ: “Xin đừng lo lắng về người Phi-li-tin này. Tôi sẽ ra đánh với hắn!”
And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him: thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 Sau-lơ can: “Đừng làm trò lố bịch! Con không thể thắng nổi người Phi-li-tin này đâu! Con chỉ là một thiếu niên, còn người ấy là một chiến sĩ đầy kinh nghiệm từ thời niên thiếu.”
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go unto this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a lad, and he [hath been] a man of war from his youth.
34 Đa-vít giải thích: “Khi đi chăn bầy cho cha, nếu có sư tử hay gấu đến bắt chiên,
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant was feeding his father's flocks, and there came a lion, and a bear, and bore off a lamb out of the drove;
35 tôi đuổi theo đánh ác thú, giằng chiên ra khỏi miệng nó. Nếu nó quay sang tấn công tôi, tôi nắm râu, đập nó chết.
And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he rose up against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Tôi đã giết sư tử, giết gấu; tôi cũng sẽ giết người Phi-li-tin vô đạo kia, vì nó dám coi thường quân đội của Đức Chúa Trời Hằng Sống!
Both the lion and the bear did thy servant smite: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall become as one of them; because he hath defied the arrays of the living God.
37 Chúa Hằng Hữu đã cứu tôi khỏi nanh vuốt của sư tử, của gấu, cũng sẽ cứu tôi khỏi tay người Phi-li-tin vô đạo kia!” Cuối cùng Sau-lơ bằng lòng: “Thôi được, hãy đi đi. Nguyện Chúa Hằng Hữu ở cùng con!”
Moreover David said, The Lord who hath delivered me out of the power of the lion, and out of the power of the bear, will also surely deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and may the Lord be with thee.
38 Sau-lơ lấy binh giáp mình trang bị cho Đa-vít, đội lên đầu một mũ đồng, mặc vào người một áo giáp,
And Saul clothed David with his garments, and he put a helmet of copper upon his head; and he clothed him also with a coat of mail.
39 đeo vào hông một thanh gươm. Xong, Đa-vít thử bước đi, vì chưa bao giờ mang bộ binh giáp như thế. Đa-vít nói: “Tôi không quen nên đi đứng không được tự nhiên.” Rồi Đa-vít cởi bỏ mọi thứ ra.
And David girded his sword over his garments, and he essayed to go; for he had not tried it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot walk in these [things]; for I have never tried it before. And David put them off from him.
40 Người cầm trong tay một cây gậy và một cái ná, Đa-vít nhặt bên suối năm hòn sỏi nhẵn bóng bỏ vào túi chăn chiên vẫn đeo theo bên mình, rồi tiến về phía người Phi-li-tin.
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's pouch which be had, even in a scrip, with his sling in his hand; and he approached to the Philistine.
41 Gô-li-át cũng tiến đến gần Đa-vít, có người vác binh khí đi trước.
And the Philistine went and drew nearer and nearer unto David; and the man that bore the shield went before him.
42 Khi thấy Đa-vít còn trẻ, nước da đỏ hồng, mặt mày khôi ngô nên Gô-li-át tỏ vẻ khinh bỉ,
And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a lad, and ruddy, with a fair appearance.
43 nói với Đa-vít: “Ta có phải chó đâu mà mầy cầm gậy?” Rồi nhân danh các thần mình, Gô-li-át nguyền rủa Đa-vít.
And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest unto me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 Gô-li-át la lên: “Đến đây, ta sẽ lấy thịt mày cho chim chóc và thú rừng ăn.”
And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the heavens, and to the beasts of the field.
45 Đa-vít đáp: “Ngươi mang gươm giáo đến đánh ta, nhưng ta nhân Danh Chúa Hằng Hữu Vạn Quân—Đức Chúa Trời của quân đội Ít-ra-ên, Đấng ngươi dám nhục mạ, mà đến cùng ngươi.
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest unto me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the arrays of Israel, that thou hast defied.
46 Hôm nay Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ lấy mạng ngươi, ta sẽ giết ngươi và chặt đầu ngươi. Hôm nay ta cũng lấy thây quân sĩ Phi-li-tin cho chim chóc và thú rừng ăn, cả thế giới sẽ biết rằng Ít-ra-ên có Đức Chúa Trời!
This day will the Lord deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and remove thy head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the army of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there is a God for Israel.
47 Những ai có mặt tại đây sẽ hiểu rằng khi Chúa Hằng Hữu cứu giúp dân Ngài, mà không cần đến gươm giáo. Đây là cuộc chiến của Chúa Hằng Hữu, Ngài sẽ nạp mạng các ngươi cho chúng ta!”
And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not through sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you up into our hand.
48 Gô-li-át xông về phía Đa-vít. Đa-vít cũng vội vàng tiến lên.
And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and went and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the battle-array to meet the Philistine.
49 Đưa tay vào túi lấy viên sỏi đặt vào ná, Đa-vít bắn ngay vào trán người Phi-li-tin. Viên sỏi đâm thủng trán, Gô-li-át ngã xuống, sấp mặt trên đất.
And David put his hand into the pouch, and took thence a stone, and slung it, and he struck the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sunk into his forehead: and he fell upon his face to the ground.
50 Như thế, Đa-vít dùng ná thắng người Phi-li-tin, không có gươm trong tay.
So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and with the stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Đa-vít chạy đến rồi rút gươm của Gô-li-át ra khỏi vỏ. Đa-vít dùng gươm ấy đâm hắn và chặt đầu hắn. Quân Phi-li-tin thấy dũng sĩ của mình chết, vội vàng bỏ chạy.
And David ran, and stood by the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled.
52 Quân Ít-ra-ên và Giu-đa thừa thắng xông lên, hò la đuổi theo quân địch cho đến Gát và cửa thành Éc-rôn. Vì thế, xác người Phi-li-tin nằm ngổn ngang dọc đường từ Sa-a-ra-im cho đến Gát và Éc-rôn.
And then arose the men of Israel and of Judah, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to the valley, and to the gates of 'Ekron. And the slain of the Philistines fell down by the way to Sha'arayim, even as far as Gath, and up to 'Ekron.
53 Sau đó, người Ít-ra-ên quay lại cướp phá doanh trại Phi-li-tin.
And the children of Israel returned from hotly pursuing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their camps.
54 (Đa-vít đem đầu của tên Phi-li-tin về Giê-ru-sa-lem; còn binh giáp người này Đa-vít đem để trong lều mình.)
And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but his weapons he placed in his tent.
55 Sau-lơ theo dõi Đa-vít đi ra đánh người Phi-li-tin, ông hỏi Áp-ne, tướng chỉ huy quân đội: “Áp-ne, người thanh niên này là con ai?” Áp-ne thưa: “Tôi thật sự không biết.”
And when Saul saw David going forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the army, Abner, whose son is this lad? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I know it not.
56 Vua nói: “Hãy hỏi xem người ấy là ai!”
And the king said, Ask thou whose son this youth is.
57 Khi Đa-vít giết xong Gô-li-át và xách đầu y trên tay, Áp-ne dẫn Đa-vít đến với Sau-lơ.
And as David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 Sau-lơ nói: “Này người trai trẻ, hãy cho ta biết về cha con.” Đa-vít đáp: “Cha con tên Gie-sê, chúng tôi sống ở Bết-lê-hem.”
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David answered, The son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lechemite.
