अम्सा 3
1 ऐ मेरे बेटे, मेरी ता'लीम को फ़रामोश न कर, बल्कि तेरा दिल मेरे हुक्मों को माने,
My son, forget not my teaching, and let thy heart keep my commandments;
2 क्यूँकि तू इनसे उम्र की दराज़ी और बुढ़ापा, और सलामती हासिल करेगा।
For length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they increase unto thee.
3 शफ़क़त और सच्चाई तुझ से जुदा न हों, तू उनको अपने गले का तौक़ बनाना, और अपने दिल की तख़्ती पर लिख लेना।
Let kindness and truth not forsake thee; bind them about thy throat; write them upon the table of thy heart:
4 यूँ तू ख़ुदा और इंसान की नज़र में, मक़्बूलियत और 'अक़्लमन्दी हासिल करेगा।
So shalt thou find grace and good favor in the eyes of God and man.
5 सारे दिल से ख़ुदावन्द पर भरोसा कर, और अपनी समझ पर इत्मिनान न कर।
Trust in the Lord with all thy heart: and upon thy own understanding do not rely.
6 अपनी सब राहों में उसको पहचान, और वह तेरी रहनुमाई करेगा।
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will make level thy paths.
7 तू अपनी ही निगाह में 'अक़्लमन्द न बन, ख़ुदावन्द से डर और बदी से किनारा कर।
Be not wise in thy own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
8 ये तेरी नाफ़ की सिहत, और तेरी हड़िडयों की ताज़गी होगी।
It will be healing to thy body, and marrow to thy bones.
9 अपने माल से और अपनी सारी पैदावार के पहले फलों से, ख़ुदावन्द की ता'ज़ीम कर।
Honor the Lord with thy wealth, and with the first-fruits of all thy products:
10 यूँ तेरे खत्ते भरे रहेंगे, और तेरे हौज़ नई मय से लबरेज़ होंगे।
So shall thy storehouses be filled with plenty, and with new wine shall thy presses overflow.
11 ऐ मेरे बेटे, ख़ुदावन्द की तम्बीह को हक़ीर न जान, और उसकी मलामत से बेज़ार न हो;
The correction of the Lord, my son, do not despise; and feel no loathing for his admonition;
12 क्यूँकि ख़ुदावन्द उसी को मलामत करता है जिससे उसे मुहब्बत है, जैसे बाप उस बेटे को जिससे वह ख़ुश है।
Because whomever the Lord loveth he admonisheth; and as a father who delighteth in [his] son.
13 मुबारक है वह आदमी जो हिकमत को पाता है, और वह जो समझ हासिल करता है,
Happy the man that hath found wisdom, and the man that acquireth understanding.
14 क्यूँकि इसका हासिल चाँदी के हासिल से, और इसका नफ़ा' कुन्दन से बेहतर है।
For the obtaining of her is better than the obtaining of silver, and better than fine gold is her product.
15 वह मरजान से ज़्यादा बेशबहा है, और तेरी पसंदीदा चीज़ों में बेमिसाल।
She is more precious than pearls; and all the things thou valuest are not equal unto her.
16 उसके दहने हाथ में उम्र की दराज़ी है, और उसके बाएँ हाथ में दौलत ओ — 'इज़्ज़त।
Length of days is in her right hand: in her left are riches and honor.
17 उसकी राहें खु़श गवार राहें हैं, और उसके सब रास्ते सलामती के हैं।
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 जो उसे पकड़े रहते हैं, वह उनके लिए ज़िन्दगी का दरख़्त है, और हर एक जो उसे लिए रहता है, मुबारक है।
A tree of life is she to those that lay hold on her: and every one that firmly graspeth her will be made happy.
19 ख़ुदावन्द ने हिकमत से ज़मीन की बुनियाद डाली; और समझ से आसमान को क़ाईम किया।
The Lord hath through wisdom founded the earth: he hath established the heavens through understanding.
20 उसी के 'इल्म से गहराओ के सोते फूट निकले, और अफ़लाक शबनम टपकाते हैं।
By his knowledge were the depths split open, and the skies drop down the dew.
21 ऐ मेरे बेटे, 'अक़्लमंदी और तमीज़ की हिफ़ाज़त कर, उनको अपनी आँखों से ओझल न होने दे;
My son, let them not be removed from thy eyes; keep [before thee] sound wisdom and discretion:
22 यूँ वह तेरी जान की हयात, और तेरे गले की ज़ीनत होंगी।
And they will be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy throat.
23 तब तू बेखटके अपने रास्ते पर चलेगा, और तेरे पाँव को ठेस न लगेगी।
Then wilt thou walk in safety on thy way, and thy foot will not strike [against aught]:
24 जब तू लेटेगा तो ख़ौफ़ न खाएगा, बल्कि तू लेट जाएगा और तेरी नींद मीठी होगी।
When thou layest thyself down, thou shalt feel no dread; and as thou liest down, thy sleep shall be pleasant.
25 अचानक दहशत से ख़ौफ़ न खाना, और न शरीरों की हलाकत से, जब वह आए;
Thou needest not to be afraid of sudden dread, neither of the [unlooked-for] tempest over the wicked, when it cometh.
26 क्यूँकि ख़ुदावन्द तेरा सहारा होगा, और तेरे पाँव को फँस जाने से महफ़ूज़ रख्खेगा।
For the Lord will be thy confidence, and he will guard thy foot from being caught.
27 भलाई के हक़दार से उसे किनारा न करना जब तेरे मुक़द्दर में हो।
Withhold not a benefit from him who is deserving it, when it is in the power of thy hand to do it.
28 जब तेरे पास देने को कुछ हो, तो अपने पड़ोसी से यह न कहना, अब जा, फिर आना मैं तुझे कल दूँगा।
Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and return, and tomorrow will I give: when thou hast it by thee.
29 अपने पड़ोसी के खि़लाफ़ बुराई का मन्सूबा न बाँधना, जिस हाल कि वह तेरे पड़ोस में बेखटके रहता है।
Contrive not against thy neighbor any evil, when he dwelleth in safety with thee.
30 अगर किसी ने तुझे नुक़सान न पहुँचाया हो, तू उससे बे वजह झगड़ा न करना।
Quarrel not with any man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
31 तुन्दख़ू आदमी पर जलन न करना, और उसके किसी चाल चलन को इख़्तियार न करना;
Envy not the man of violence, and choose none of his ways.
32 क्यूँकि कजरौ से ख़ुदावन्द को नफ़रत लेकिन रास्तबाज़ उसके महरम — ए — राज़ हैं।
For the froward is an abomination to the Lord; but with the upright is his good-will.
33 शरीरों के घर पर ख़ुदावन्द की ला'नत है, लेकिन सादिक़ों के मस्कन पर उसकी बरकत है।
The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked; but the habitation of the righteous will he bless.
34 यक़ीनन वह ठठ्ठाबाज़ों पर ठठ्ठे मारता है, लेकिन फ़रोतनों पर फ़ज़ल करता है।
If [it concern] the scornful he will himself render them a scorn; but unto the lowly doth he give grace.
35 'अक़्लमंद जलाल के वारिस होंगे, लेकिन बेवक़ूफ़ों की तरक़्क़ी शर्मिन्दगी होगी।
The wise shall inherit glory; but fools shall obtain disgrace as their portion.
