अम्सा 26
1 जिस तरह गर्मी के दिनों में बर्फ़ और दिरौ के वक्त बारिश, उसी तरह बेवक़ूफ़ को 'इज़्ज़त ज़ेब नहीं देती।
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
2 जिस तरह गौरय्या आवारा फिरती और अबाबील उड़ती रहती है, उसी तरह बे वजह ला'नत बेमतलब है।
As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, so the curse that is causeless lighteth not.
3 घोड़े के लिए चाबुक और गधे के लिए लगाम, लेकिन बेवक़ूफ़ की पीठ के लिए छड़ी है।
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of fools.
4 बेवक़ूफ़ को उसकी हिमाक़त के मुताबिक़ जवाब न दे, मबादा तू भी उसकी तरह हो जाए।
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5 बेवक़ूफ़ को उसकी हिमाक़त के मुताबिक जवाब दे, ऐसा न हो कि वह अपनी नज़र में 'अक़्लमंद ठहरे।
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
6 जो बेवक़ूफ़ के हाथ पैग़ाम भेजता है, अपने पाँव पर कुल्हाड़ा मारता और नुक़सान का प्याला पीता है।
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off [his own] feet, [and] drinketh in damage.
7 जिस तरह लंगड़े की टाँग लड़खड़ाती है, उसी तरह बेवक़ूफ़ के मुँह में तमसील है।
The legs of the lame hang loose: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
8 बेवक़ूफ़ की ता'ज़ीम करने वाला, गोया जवाहिर को पत्थरों के ढेर में रखता है।
As a bag of gems in a heap of stones, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
9 बेवक़ूफ़ के मुँह में तमसील, शराबी के हाथ में चुभने वाले काँटे की तरह है।
[As] a thorn that goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the month of fools.
10 जो बेवक़ूफ़ों और राहगुज़रों को मज़दूरी पर लगाता है, उस तीरंदाज़ की तरह है जो सबको ज़ख़्मी करता है।
[As] an archer that woundeth all, so is he that hireth the fool and he that hireth them that pass by.
11 जिस तरह कुत्ता अपने उगले हुए को फिर खाता है, उसी तरह बेवक़ूफ़ अपनी बेवक़ूफ़ी को दोहराता है।
As a dog that returneth to his vomit, [so is] a fool that repeateth his folly.
12 क्या तू उसको जो अपनी नज़र में 'अक़्लमंद है देखता है? उसके मुक़ाबिले में बेवक़ूफ़ से ज़्यादा उम्मीद है।
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
13 सुस्त आदमी कहता है, राह में शेर है, शेर — ए — बबर गलियों में है!
The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
14 जिस तरह दरवाज़ा अपनी चूलों पर फिरता है, उसी तरह सुस्त आदमी अपने बिस्तर पर करवट बदलता रहता है।
[As] the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the sluggard upon his bed.
15 सुस्त आदमी अपना हाथ थाली में डालता है, और उसे फिर मुँह तक लाना उसको थका देता है।
The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.
16 काहिल अपनी नज़र में 'अक़्लमंद है, बल्कि दलील लाने वाले सात शख्सों से बढ़ कर।
The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
17 जो रास्ता चलते हुए पराए झगड़े में दख़्ल देता है, उसकी तरह है जो कुत्ते को कान से पकड़ता है।
He that passeth by, [and] vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, is [like] one that taketh a dog by the ears.
18 जैसा वह दीवाना जो जलती लकड़ियाँ और मौत के तीर फेंकता है,
As a madman who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death;
19 वैसा ही वह शख़्स है जो अपने पड़ोसी को दग़ा देता है, और कहता है, मैं तो दिल्लगी कर रहा था।
So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?
20 लकड़ी न होने से आग बुझ जाती है, इसलिए जहाँ चुगलख़ोर नहीं वहाँ झगड़ा मौकूफ़ हो जाता है।
For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.
21 जैसे अंगारों पर कोयले और आग पर ईंधन है, वैसे ही झगड़ालू झगड़ा खड़ा करने के लिए है।
[As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to inflame strife.
22 चुगलख़ोरकी बातें लज़ीज़ निवाले हैं, और वह खूब हज़म हो जाती हैं।
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
23 उलफ़ती, लब बदख़्वाह दिल के साथ, उस ठीकरे की तरह है जिस पर खोटी चाँदी मेंढ़ी हो।
Fervent lips and a wicked heart are [like] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.
24 कीनावर दिल में दग़ा रखता है, लेकिन अपनी बातों से छिपाता है;
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him:
25 जब वह मीठी मीठी बातें करे तो उसका यक़ीन न कर, क्यूँकि उसके दिल में कमाल नफ़रत है।
When he speaketh fair, believe him not; for there are seven abominations in his heart:
26 अगरचे उसकी बदख़्वाही मक्र में छिपी है, तो भी उसकी बदी जमा'अत के आमने सामने खोल दी जाएगी।
Though [his] hatred cover itself with guile, his wickedness shall be openly shewed before the congregation.
27 जो गढ़ा खोदता है, आप ही उसमें गिरेगा; और जो पत्थर ढलकाता है, वह पलटकर उसी पर पड़ेगा।
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.
28 झूटी ज़बान उनका कीना रखती है जिनको उस ने घायल किया है, और चापलूस मुँह तबाही करता है।
A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
