अम्सा 24
1 तू शरीरों पर रश्क न करना, और उनकी सुहबत की ख़्वाहिश न रखना;
Be not thou envious of wicked men, And desire not to be with them!
2 क्यूँकि उनके दिल जुल्म की फ़िक्र करते हैं, और उनके लब शरारत का ज़िक्र।
For their heart studieth destruction, And their lips speak mischief.
3 हिकमत से घर ता'मीर किया जाता है, और समझ से उसको क़याम होता है।
Through wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding is it established;
4 और 'इल्म के वसीले से कोठरियाँ, नफ़ीस — ओ — लतीफ़ माल से मा'मूर की जाती हैं।
Yea, by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and goodly substance.
5 'अक़्लमंद आदमी ताक़तवर है, बल्कि साहिब — ए — 'इल्म का ताक़त बढ़ती रहती है।
The wise man is strong; Yea, the man of understanding establisheth his strength.
6 क्यूँकि तू नेक सलाह लेकर जंग कर सकता है, और सलाहकारों की कसरत में सलामती है।
For by wise counsel shalt thou make war, And by the multitude of counsellors cometh success.
7 हिकमत बेवक़ूफ़ के लिए बहुत बलन्द है; वह फाटक पर मुँह नहीं खोल सकता।
Wisdom is too high for the fool; He openeth not his mouth at the gate.
8 जो बदी के मन्सूबे बाँधता है, फ़ितनाअंगेज़ कहलाएगा।
He that deviseth to do evil Shall be called mischief-master.
9 बेवक़ूफ़ी का मन्सूबा भी गुनाह है, और ठठ्ठा करने वाले से लोगों को नफ़रत है।
The purpose of folly is sin; And a scoffer is an abomination to men.
10 अगर तू मुसीबत के दिन बेदिल हो जाए, तो तेरी ताक़त बहुत कम है।
If thy spirit faint in the day of adversity, Faint will be thy strength.
11 जो क़त्ल के लिए घसीटे जाते हैं, उनको छुड़ा; जो मारे जाने को हैं उनको हवाले न कर।
Deliver thou those who are dragged to death, And those who totter to the slaughter, —O keep them back!
12 अगर तू कहे, देखो, हम को यह मा'लूम न था, तो क्या दिलों को जाँचने वाला यह नहीं समझता? और क्या तेरी जान का निगहबान यह नहीं जानता? और क्या वह हर शख़्स को उसके काम के मुताबिक़ बदला न देगा?
If thou sayst, “Behold, we knew it not!” Doth not he that weigheth the heart observe it? Yea, he that keepeth thy soul knoweth it. And he will render to every man according to his works.
13 ऐ मेरे बेटे, तू शहद खा, क्यूँकि वह अच्छा है, और शहद का छत्ता भी क्यूँकि वह तुझे मीठा लगता है।
Eat honey, my son, for it is good, And the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste;
14 हिकमत भी तेरी जान के लिए ऐसी ही होगी; अगर वह तुझे मिल जाए तो तेरे लिए बदला होगा, और तेरी उम्मीद नहीं टूटेगी।
So learn thou wisdom for thy soul! When thou hast found it, there shall be a reward, And thy expectation shall not be cut off.
15 ऐ शरीर, तू सादिक़ के घर की घात में न बैठना, उसकी आरामगाह को ग़ारत न करना;
Plot not, O wicked man! against the habitation of the righteous; Spoil not his resting-place!
16 क्यूँकि सादिक़ सात बार गिरता है और फिर उठ खड़ा होता है; लेकिन शरीर बला में गिर कर पड़ा ही रहता है।
For though the righteous fall seven times, yet shall he rise up again; But the wicked shall fall into mischief.
17 जब तेरा दुश्मन गिर पड़े तो ख़ुशी न करना, और जब वह पछाड़ खाए तो दिलशाद न होना।
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;
18 ऐसा न हो ख़ुदावन्द इसे देखकर नाराज़ हो, और अपना क़हर उस पर से उठा ले।
Lest the LORD see, and it displease him, And he turn away his anger from him.
19 तू बदकिरदारों की वजह से बेज़ार न हो, और शरीरों पे रश्क न कर;
Fret not thyself on account of evil men, Neither be thou envious of the wicked;
20 क्यूँकि बदकिरदार के लिए कुछ बदला नहीं। शरीरों का चिराग़ बुझा दिया जाएगा।
For there shall be no posterity to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
21 ऐ मेरे बेटे, ख़ुदावन्द से और बादशाह से डर; और मुफ़सिदों के साथ सुहबत न रख;
My son, fear thou the LORD and the king; And mingle not with them that are given to change!
22 क्यूँकि उन पर अचानक आफ़त आएगी, और उन दोनों की तरफ़ से आने वाली हलाकत को कौन जानता है?
For their calamity shall rise up suddenly, And their ruin, coming from them both, in a moment.
23 ये भी 'अक़्लमंदों की बातें हैं: 'अदालत में तरफ़दारी करना अच्छा नहीं।
These also are words of the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
24 जो शरीर से कहता है तू सादिक़ है, लोग उस पर ला'नत करेंगे और उम्मतें उस से नफ़रत रख्खेंगी;
He that saith to the wicked, “Thou art righteous,” Him shall the people curse; Nations shall abhor him.
25 लेकिन जो उसको डाँटते हैं ख़ुश होंगे, और उनकी बड़ी बरकत मिलेगी।
But it shall be well with them that punish him, And the blessing of prosperity shall come upon them.
26 जो हक़ बात कहता है, लबों पर बोसा देता है।
He that giveth a right answer Kisseth the lips.
27 अपना काम बाहर तैयार कर, उसे अपने लिए खेत में दुरूस्त कर ले; और उसके बाद अपना घर बना।
Arrange thy work without, And prepare it in thy field: Afterwards thou mayst build thy house.
28 बेवजह अपने पड़ोसी के ख़िलाफ़ गावाही न देना, और अपने लबों से धोखा न देना।
Be not a witness without cause against thy neighbor, And deceive not with thy lips.
29 यूँ न कह, “मैं उससे वैसा ही करूंगा जैसा उसने मुझसे किया; मैं उस आदमी से उसके काम के मुताबिक़ सुलूक करूँगा।”
Say not, “As he hath done to me, So will I do to him; I will render to the man according to his doings.”
30 मैं काहिल के खेत के और बे'अक़्ल के ताकिस्तान के पास से गुज़रा,
I passed by the field of the slothful, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding,
31 और देखो, वह सब का सब काँटों से भरा था, और बिच्छू बूटी से ढका था; और उसकी संगीन दीवार गिराई गई थी।
And, lo! it was all overgrown with thorns, And the face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.
32 तब मैंने देखा और उस पर ख़ूब ग़ौर किया; हाँ, मैंने उस पर निगह की और 'इब्रत पाई।
Then I saw, and considered it well; I looked upon it. and received instruction.
33 थोड़ी सी नींद, एक और झपकी, ज़रा पड़े रहने को हाथ पर हाथ,
“A little sleep, a little slumber! A little folding of the hands to rest!”
34 इसी तरह तेरी मुफ़लिसी राहज़न की तरह, और तेरी तंगदस्ती हथियारबंद आदमी की तरह, आ पड़ेगी।
So shall poverty come upon thee like a highwayman; Yea, want like an armed man.
