अम्सा 23
1 जब तू हाकिम के साथ खाने बैठे, तो खू़ब ग़ौर कर, कि तेरे सामने कौन है?
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,
2 अगर तू खाऊ है, तो अपने गले पर छुरी रख दे।
And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.
3 उसके मज़ेदार खानों की तमन्ना न कर, क्यूँकि वह दग़ा बाज़ी का खाना है।
Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 मालदार होने के लिए परेशान न हो; अपनी इस 'अक़्लमन्दी से बाज़ आ।
Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.
5 क्या तू उस चीज़ पर आँख लगाएगा जो है ही नहीं? लेकिन लगा कर आसमान की तरफ़ उड़ जाती है?
For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.
6 तू तंग चश्म की रोटी न खा, और उसके मज़ेदार खानों की तमन्ना न कर;
Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,
7 क्यूँकि जैसे उसके दिल के ख़याल हैं वह वैसा ही है। वह तुझ से कहता है खा और पी, लेकिन उसका दिल तेरी तरफ़ नहीं
For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.
8 जो निवाला तूने खाया है तू उसे उगल देगा, और तेरी मीठी बातें बे मतलब होंगी
Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.
9 अपनी बातें बेवक़ूफ़ को न सुना, क्यूँकि वह तेरे 'अक़्लमंदी के कलाम की ना क़द्री करेगा।
In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.
10 पुरानी हदों को न सरका, और यतीमों के खेतों में दख़ल न कर,
Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 क्यूँकि उनका रिहाई बख़्शने वाला ज़बरदस्त है; वह खुद ही तेरे ख़िलाफ़ उनकी वक़ालत करेगा।
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 तरबियत पर दिल लगा, और 'इल्म की बातें सुन।
Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 लड़के से तादीब को दरेग़ न कर; अगर तू उसे छड़ी से मारेगा तो वह मर न जाएगा।
Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest. (Sheol h7585)
15 ऐ मेरे बेटे, अगर तू 'अक़्लमंद दिल है, तो मेरा दिल, हाँ मेरा दिल ख़ुश होगा।
My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 और जब तेरे लबों से सच्ची बातें निकलेंगी, तो मेरा दिल शादमान होगा।
And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 तेरा दिल गुनहगारों पर रश्क न करे, बल्कि तू दिन भर ख़ुदावन्द से डरता रह।
Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 क्यूँकि बदला यक़ीनी है, और तेरी आस नहीं टूटेगी।
For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 ऐ मेरे बेटे, तू सुन और 'अक़्लमंद बन, और अपने दिल की रहबरी कर।
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 तू शराबियों में शामिल न हो, और न हरीस कबाबियों में,
Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 क्यूँकि शराबी और खाऊ कंगाल हो जाएँगे और नींद उनको चीथड़े पहनाएगी।
For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 अपने बाप का जिससे तू पैदा हुआ सुनने वाला हो, और अपनी माँ को उसके बुढ़ापे में हक़ीर न जान।
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 सच्चाई की मोल ले और उसे बेच न डाल; हिकमत और तरबियत और समझ को भी।
Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 सादिक़ का बाप निहायत ख़ुश होगा; और अक़्लमंद का बाप उससे शादमानी करेगा।
The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 अपने माँ बाप को ख़ुश कर, अपनी वालिदा को शादमान रख।
Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 ऐ मेरे बेटे, अपना दिल मुझ को दे, और मेरी राहों से तेरी आँखें ख़ुश हों।
Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 क्यूँकि फ़ाहिशा गहरी ख़न्दक़ है, और बेगाना 'औरत तंग गढ़ा है।
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.
28 वह राहज़न की तरह घात में लगी है, और बनी आदम में बदकारों का शुमार बढ़ाती है।
She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 कौन अफ़सोस करता है? कौन ग़मज़दा है? कौन झगड़ालू है? कौन शाकी है? कौन बे वजह घायल है? और किसकी आँखों में सुर्ख़ी है?
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 वही जो देर तक मयनोशी करते हैं; वही जो मिलाई हुई मय की तलाश में रहते हैं।
Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 जब मय लाल लाल हो, जब उसका बर'अक्स जाम पर पड़े, और जब वह रवानी के साथ नीचे उतरे, तो उस पर नज़र न कर।
See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
32 क्यूँकि अन्जाम कार वह साँप की तरह काटती, और अज़दहे की तरह डस जाती है।
Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
33 तेरी आँखें 'अजीब चीज़ें देखेंगी, और तेरे मुँह से उलटी सीधी बातें निकलेगी।
Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.
34 बल्कि तू उसकी तरह होगा जो समन्दर के बीच में लेट जाए, या उसकी तरह जो मस्तूल के सिरे पर सो रहे।
And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 तू कहेगा उन्होंने तो मुझे मारा है, लेकिन मुझ को चोट नहीं लगी; उन्होंने मुझे पीटा है लेकिन मुझे मा'लूम भी नहीं हुआ। मैं कब बेदार हूँगा? मैं फिर उसका तालिब हूँगा।
'They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake — I seek it yet again!'
