अम्सा 17
1 सलामती के साथ ख़ुश्क निवाला इस से बेहतर है, कि घर ने'मत से भरा हो और उसके साथ झगड़ा हो।
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of feasting [with] strife.
2 'अक्लमन्द नौकर उस बेटे पर जी रुस्वा करता है हुक्मरान होगा, और भाइयों में शमिल होकर मीरास का हिस्सा लेगा।
A wise servant shall rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.
3 चाँदी के लिए कुठाली है और सोने केलिए भट्टी, लेकिन दिलों को ख़ुदावन्द जांचता है।
The fining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but Jehovah trieth the hearts.
4 बदकिरदार झूटे लबों की सुनता है, और झूठा मुफ़सिद ज़बान का शनवा होता है।
The evil-doer giveth heed to iniquitous lips; the liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 गरीब पर हँसने वाला, उसके ख़ालिक की बेक़द्री करता है; और जो औरों की मुसीबत से ख़ुश होता है, बे सज़ा न छूटेगा।
Whoso mocketh a poor [man] reproacheth his Maker; he that is glad at calamity shall not be held innocent.
6 बेटों के बेटे बूढ़ों के लिए ताज हैं; और बेटों के फ़ख़्र का ज़रिया' उनके बाप — दादा हैं।
Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 ख़ुश गोई बेवक़ूफ़ को नहीं सजती, तो किस क़दर कमदरोग़गोई शरीफ़ को सजेगी।
Excellent speech becometh not a vile [man]; how much less do lying lips a noble!
8 रिश्वत जिसके हाथ में है उसकी नज़रमें गिरान बहा जवाहर है, और वह जिधर तवज्जुह करता है कामयाब होता है।
A gift is a precious stone in the eyes of the possessor: whithersoever it turneth it prospereth.
9 जो ख़ता पोशी करता है मुहब्बत का तालिब है, लेकिन जो ऐसी बात को बार बार छेड़ता है, दोस्तों में जुदाई डालता है।
He that covereth transgression seeketh love; but he that bringeth a matter up again separateth very friends.
10 समझदार पर एक झिड़की, बेवक़ूफ़ों पर सौ कोड़ों से ज़्यादा असर करती है।
A reproof entereth more deeply into him that hath understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.
11 शरीर महज़ सरकशी का तालिब है, उसके मुक़ाबले में संगदिल क़ासिद भेजा जाएगा।
An evil [man] seeketh only rebellion; but a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 जिस रीछनी के बच्चे पकड़े गए हों आदमी का उस से दो चार होना, इससे बेहतर है के बेवक़ूफ़ की बेवक़ूफ़ी में उसके सामने आए।
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man rather than a fool in his folly.
13 जो नेकी के बदले में बदी करता है, उसके घर से बदी हरगिज़ जुदा न होगी।
Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 झगड़े का शुरू' पानी के फूट निकलने की तरह है, इसलिए लड़ाई से पहले झगड़े को छोड़ दे।
The beginning of contention is [as] when one letteth out water; therefore leave off strife before it become vehement.
15 जो शरीर को सादिक़ और जो सादिक़ को शरीर ठहराता है, ख़ुदावन्द को उन दोनों से नफ़रत है।
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are abomination to Jehovah.
16 हिकमत ख़रीदने को बेवक़ूफ़ के हाथ में क़ीमत से क्या फ़ाइदा है, हालाँकि उसका दिल उसकी तरफ़ नहीं?
To what purpose is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing [he] hath no sense?
17 दोस्त हर वक़्त मुहब्बत दिखाता है, और भाई मुसीबत के दिन के लिए पैदा हुआ है।
The friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 बे'अक़्ल आदमी हाथ पर हाथ मारता है, और अपने पड़ोसी के सामने ज़ामिन होता है।
A senseless man striketh hands, becoming surety for his neighbour.
19 फ़साद पसंद ख़ता पसंद है, और अपने दरवाज़े को बलन्द करने वाला हलाकत का तालिब।
He loveth transgression that loveth a quarrel; he that maketh high his gate seeketh destruction.
20 कजदिला भलाई को न देखेगा, और जिसकी ज़बान कजगो है मुसीबत में पड़ेगा।
He that hath a perverse heart findeth no good; and he that shifteth about with his tongue falleth into evil.
21 बेवकूफ़ के वालिद के लिए ग़म है, क्यूँकि बेवक़ूफ़ के बाप को ख़ुशी नहीं।
He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow, and the father of a vile [man] hath no joy.
22 शादमान दिल शिफ़ा बख़्शता है, लेकिन अफ़सुर्दा दिली हड्डियों को ख़ुश्क कर देती है।
A joyful heart promoteth healing; but a broken spirit drieth up the bones.
23 शरीर बगल में रिश्वत रख लेता है, ताकि 'अदालत की राहें बिगाड़े।
A wicked [man] taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the paths of judgment.
24 हिकमत समझदार के आमने सामने है, लेकिन बेवक़ूफ़ की आँख ज़मीन के किनारों पर लगी हैं।
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 बेवक़ूफ़ बेटा अपने बाप के लिए ग़म, और अपनी माँ के लिए तल्ख़ी है।
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
26 सादिक़ को सज़ा देना, और शरीफ़ों को उनकी रास्ती की वजह से मारना, खूब नहीं।
To punish a righteous [man] is not good, nor to strike nobles because of [their] uprightness.
27 साहिब — ए — इल्म कमगो है, और समझदार मतीन है।
He that hath knowledge spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of a cool spirit.
28 बेवक़ूफ़ भी जब तक ख़ामोश है, 'अक्लमन्द गिना जाता है; जो अपने लब बलंद रखता है, होशियार है।
Even a fool when he holdeth his peace is reckoned wise, [and] he that shutteth his lips, intelligent.
