1 При́повісті Соломона, сина Давидового, царя Ізраїлевого, —
The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.
2 щоб пізна́ти премудрість і карність, щоб зрозуміти розсу́дні слова́,
They are for achieving wisdom and instruction, and to recognize sayings that bring insight.
3 щоб прийняти напоу́млення мудрости, праведности, і пра́ва й простоти,
They provide education in what makes sense, living right, judging correctly, and acting fairly.
4 щоб мудрости дати простоду́шним, юнако́ві — пізна́ння й розва́жність.
They give discernment to the immature, knowledge and discretion to the young.
5 Хай послухає мудрий — і примно́жить науку, а розумний здобу́де хай мудрих думо́к,
Wise people will listen and gain in learning, and those who have good judgment will gain skills in guidance,
6 щоб пізнати ту при́повість та загадко́ве говорення, слова мудреці́в та їхні за́гадки.
understanding the proverbs and puzzles, the sayings and questions of the wise.
7 Страх Господній — початок прему́дрости, — нерозумні пого́рджують мудрістю та напу́чуванням.
Honoring the Lord is where true knowledge begins, but fools treat wisdom and good advice with contempt.
8 Послухай, мій сину, напу́чення батька свого́, і не відкидай науки матері своєї, —
My son, pay attention to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching.
9 вони бо хороший вінок для твоєї голови, і прикра́са на шию твою.
They are a wreath of grace to decorate your head; they are pendants for your neck.
10 Мій сину, як грішники будуть тебе намовляти, — то з ними не згоджуйся ти!
My son, if evil people try to tempt you, don't give into them.
11 Якщо скажуть вони: „Ходи з нами, чатуймо на кров, безпричи́нно засядьмо на неповинного,
They may tell you, “Come with us. Let's go and hide, ready to kill someone. Let's ambush someone for fun!
Let's bury them alive; let's put them in the grave while they're still healthy! (Sheol h7585)
13 Ми зна́йдемо всіляке багатство цінне́, перепо́внимо здо́биччю наші хати́.
We'll take from them all kinds of valuable things and fill our homes with the stuff we steal!
14 Жеребо́к свій ти кинеш із нами, — буде са́ква одна для всіх нас“, —
Come and join us and we'll all share what we get!”
15 сину мій, — не ходи ти доро́гою з ними, спини́ но́гу свою від їхньої сте́жки,
My son, don't follow their ways. Don't go in that direction with them.
16 бо біжать їхні но́ги на зло, і поспішають, щоб кров проливати!
For they rush to do evil; they hurry to commit violence and murder.
17 Бож нада́рмо поставлена сі́тка на о́чах усього крила́того:
There's no point in trying to lure birds into a net when they can see it.
18 то вони на кров власну чату́ють, засідають на душу свою!
However, these evil people hide ready to kill others, but they themselves are the victims. They're only ambushing themselves!
19 Такі то доро́ги усіх, хто за́здрий чужого добра: воно́ бере душу свого власника́!
This is what happens to you if you try to become rich through crime—it kills you!
20 Кличе мудрість на вулиці, на пло́щах свій голос дає,
Wisdom calls out in the streets; she shouts aloud in the squares.
21 на шумли́вих місцях проповідує, у місті при входах до брам вона каже слова́ свої:
She cries out at busy corners; she explains her message at the town gates:
22 „Доки ви, нерозумні, глупо́ту любитимете? Аж доки насмі́шники будуть кохатись собі в глузува́нні, а безглу́зді нена́видіти будуть знания́?
“How long will you stupid people love stupidity? How long will scornful people enjoy their mocking? How long will fools hate knowledge?
23 Зверніться но ви до карта́ння мого́, — ось я виллю вам духа свого, сповіщу́ вам слова свої!
Pay attention to my warnings, and I'll pour out my deepest thoughts to you—I'll explain what I know to you.
24 Бо кликала я, та відмовились ви, простягла́ була руку свою, та ніхто не прислу́хувався!
For I have called you, but you refused to listen; I reached out my hand to you, but you didn't care.
25 І всю раду мою ви відкинули, карта́ння ж мого не схотіли!
You ignored everything I said; you wouldn't accept any of my warnings.
26 Тож у вашім нещасті сміятися буду і я, насміха́тися буду, як при́йде ваш страх.
So I'll laugh at you when you're in trouble; I'll mock you when you're in a panic.
27 Коли при́йде ваш страх, немов вихор, і прива́литься ваше нещастя, мов буря, як при́йде недоля та у́тиск на вас,
When panic rains down on you like a storm, when trouble hits you like a whirlwind, when sorrow and pain come on you,
28 тоді кликати бу́дуть мене, але не відпові́м, будуть шукати мене, та не зна́йдуть мене, —
then you'll call out to me for help, but I won't answer; you'll search hard for me, but won't find me.
29 за те, що науку знена́виділи, і не ви́брали стра́ху Господнього,
Why?—because they hated knowledge, and they didn't choose to respect the Lord.
30 не хотіли поради моєї, пого́рджували всіма моїми доко́рами!
They're not willing to accept my advice; they despise all my warnings.
31 І тому́ хай їдять вони з пло́ду дороги своєї, а з порад своїх хай насища́ються, —
So they'll have to eat the fruit of their own choices, bloated by their own devious schemes.
32 бо відсту́пство безумних заб'є їх, і безпе́чність безтя́мних їх ви́губить!
Stupid people are killed by their rebellion; foolish people are destroyed by their lack of concern.
33 А хто мене слухає, той буде жити безпе́чно, і буде спокійний від страху перед злом!“
But everyone who listens to me will be kept safe, and will live without worrying about problems.”
