Числа 22
1 І рушили Ізраїлеві сини, та й таборува́ли в моавських степах по тім боці приєрихонського Йорда́ну.
And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in the plains of Moab, on this side of the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
2 І побачив Бала́к, син Ціппо́рів, усе, що зробив Ізра́їль аморе́янинові.
And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Emorites.
3 І дуже злякався Моав того наро́ду, бо він був великий. І настра́шився Моав Ізра́їлевих синів.
And Moab was greatly afraid of the people, because it was numerous; and Moab was horrified because of the children of Israel.
4 І сказав Моав до мідія́нських старших: Тепер повиску́бує оця громада всі наші околиці, як виску́бує віл польову́ зелени́ну“. А Бала́к, син Ціппо́рів, був того часу моавським царем.
And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this assemblage devour all that is round about us, as the ox devoureth the grass of the field; and Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.
5 І послав він послів до Валаа́ма, Беорового сина, до Петору, що над Річкою, до кра́ю синів народу його, щоб покликати його, говорячи: „Ось вийшов народ із Єгипту, ось покрив він пове́рхню землі, і сидить навпроти мене.
And he sent messengers unto Bil'am the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river, in the land of the children of his people, to have him called; saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, it covereth the surface of the earth, and it is abiding opposite to me:
6 А тепер ходи ж, прокляни́ мені цей народ, бо він міцніший за ме́не. Може я потра́плю вдарити його, і вижену його з кра́ю, бо знаю, що кого ти поблагосло́виш, той благослове́нний, а кого прокляне́ш, — прокля́тий“.
And now do but come, curse me this people; for it is too mighty for me; peradventure I may be able to smite it, that I may drive it out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7 І пішли моавські старші та старші Мідіяну, — а дарунки за чари в руці їх, — і прийшли до Валаама, та й промовляли до нього Балакові слова́. І
And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bil'am, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.
8 А він їм сказав: „Ночуйте тут і цієї но́чі, і я перекажу́ вам слово, як Господь промовлятиме до мене“. І зостались моавські вельможі в Валаама.
And he said unto them, Remain you here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord may speak unto me; and the princes of Moab abode with Bil'am.
9 І прийшов Бог до Валаама та й сказав: „Хто ці люди з тобою?“
And God came unto Bil'am, and said, Who are these men with thee?
10 І сказав Валаа́м до Бога: „Балак, син Ціппорів, цар моавський, послав до мене сказати:
And Bil'am said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, hath sent unto me, [saying, ]
11 Ось народ виходить з Єгипту, і закрив пове́рхню землі; тепер іди ж, прокляни мені його, — може я потра́плю воювати з ним, і вижену його“.
Behold, there is the people that is come out of Egypt, and covereth the face of the earth: now come, denounce it for me; peradventure I shall be able to fight against it, and drive it away.
12 І сказав Бог до Валаама: „Не пі́деш ти з ними, не прокляне́ш того народу, бо благослове́нний він!“
And God said unto Bil'am, Thou shalt not go with them: thou shalt not curse the people; for it is blessed.
13 І встав Валаам уранці та й сказав до Валакових вельмож: „Верта́йтесь до свого кра́ю, бо відмовив Господь позволити мені піти з вами“.
And Bil'am rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Go back to your land; for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
14 І встали моавські вельможі, і прийшли до Балака та й сказали: „Відмовив Валаам піти з нами“.
And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Bil'am refuseth to come with us.
15 А Балак зно́ву послав вельмож, більше й поважніших від тих.
And Balak sent yet again princes, more in number, and more honorable than those.
16 І прибули́ вони до Валаама та й сказали йому: „Так сказав Балак, син Ціппорів: Не стримуйся прийти до мене,
And they came to Bil'am, and said to him, Thus hath said Balak the son of Zippor, Do not suffer thyself, I pray thee, to be prevented from coming unto me;
17 бо справді дуже вшаную тебе, і все, що скажеш мені, зроблю́. І ходи ж, — прокляни мені народ той!“
For I will honor thee greatly, and whatsoever thou mayest say unto me will I do: and only come, I pray thee, denounce me this people.
18 І відповів Валаам, і сказав Балаковим рабам: „Якщо Балак дасть мені повний свій дім срібла та золота, то й тоді я не зможу переступити наказу Господа, Бога мого, щоб зробити річ малу чи річ велику.
And Bil'am answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not transgress the order of the Lord my God, to do a small or a great thing.
19 А тепер посидьте й ви тут цієї но́чі, а я пізна́ю, що ще Господь буде говорити мені“.
And now, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will farther speak with me.
20 І прийшов Бог уночі до Валаама та й сказав йому: „Якщо ці люди прийшли покли́кати тебе, — устань, іди з ними. Але тільки те, що Я промовля́тиму до тебе, — те́ ти зробиш“.
And God came unto Bil'am at night, and said unto him, If to call thee the men have come, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I shall speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.
21 І встав Валаам уранці, і осідлав свою осли́цю, та й пішов із моавськими вельмо́жами.
And Bil'am rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 І запалився гнів Божий, що він іде. І став Ангол Господній на дорозі за перешкоду йому, а він їде на своїй ослиці, і двоє слуг його з ним.
And the anger of God was kindled, because he went; and an angel of the Lord placed himself in the way to be a hindrance to him; and he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23 І побачила та ослиця Господнього Ангола, що стоїть на дорозі, а ви́тягнений меч його в руці його. І збо́чила ослиця з дороги, і пішла полем, а Валаам ударив ослицю, щоб збочила на доро́гу.
And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Bil'am smote the ass, to make her turn into the way.
24 І став Ангол Господній на стежці виноградників, — стіна з цієї сторони, і стіна з тієї.
But the angel of the Lord stepped into a path between the vineyards, [with] a wall on this side, and a wall on that side.
25 І побачила та ослиця Господнього Ангола, і прити́снулася до стіни, та й притиснула до стіни Валаамову ногу. І він далі її бив.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she forced herself against the wall, and pressed Bil'am's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
26 І Ангол Господній знов перейшов, і став у тісно́му місці, де нема дороги збочити ні право́руч, ні ліво́руч.
And the angel of the Lord went yet farther, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.
27 І побачила та ослиця Господнього Ангола — і лягла під Валаамом. І запалився гнів Валаамів, і він ударив ослицю києм.
And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Bil'am: whereupon Bil'am's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a stick.
28 І відкрив Господь уста ослиці, і сказала вона до Валаама: „Що́ я зробила тобі, то ти оце тричі вдарив мене?“
And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Bil'am, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
29 І сказав Валаам до ослиці: „Бо ти виставила мене на сміх. Коли б меч був у руці моїй, то тепер я забив би тебе!“
And Bil'am said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: had I but a sword in my hand, I would assuredly have now killed thee.
30 І сказала осли́ця до Валаама: „Чи ж я не ослиця твоя, що ти їздив на мені, скільки живеш, аж до цього дня? Чи ж справді звикла я робити тобі так?“І він відказав: „Ні!“
And the ass said unto Bil'am, Am not I thy ass, upon which thou hast ridden from thy commencement unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, No.
31 І відкрив Господь очі Валаамові, і побачив він Господнього Ангола, що стоїть на дорозі, а його ви́тягнений меч у руці його. І схилився він, і впав на обличчя своє.
Then the Lord opened the eyes of Bil'am, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head and prostrated himself on his face.
32 І сказав до нього Ангол Господній: „На́що ти вдарив ослицю свою оце тричі? Ось я вийшов за перешкоду, бо ця дорога погибельна передо мною.
And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thy ass these three times? behold, I went out to be a hindrance; because the journey which is odious to me was too quickly begun.
33 І побачила мене ця ослиця, і збо́чила перед лицем моїм ось власне тричі. І коли б вона не збо́чила була перед лицем моїм, то тепер я й забив би тебе, а її позоставив би живою“.
And the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; if she had not turned aside from me, I would surely now not only have slain thee, but saved her alive.
34 І сказав Валаам до Господнього Ангола: „Я згрішив, бо не знав, що ти стоїш да дорозі навпроти ме́не. А тепер, якщо це зле в оча́х твоїх, то я вернуся собі“.
And Bil'am said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou wast standing against me in the way; but now, if it be evil in thy eyes, I will return home again.
35 І сказав Ангол Господній до Валаама: „Іди з цими людьми́, і те слово, що скажу́ тобі, — його тільки будеш говорити“. І пішов Валаам з Балаковими вельмо́жами.
And the angel of the Lord said unto Bil'am, Go with the men; however, only the word which I will speak unto thee, that shalt thou speak: and Bil'am went with the princes of Balak.
36 І почув Балак, що прийшов Валаам, і вийшов навпроти нього до Їр-Моаву, що на границі Арнону, що на краю́ границі.
And when Balak heard that Bil'am was come, he went out to meet him unto 'Ir-Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the outmost end of the boundary.
37 І сказав Балак до Валаама: „Чи ж справді не послав я до тебе, щоб покли́кати тебе, — чому ж не пішов ти до мене? Чи справді я не потра́плю вшанувати тебе?“
And Balak said unto Bil'am, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to have thee called? wherefore camest thou not unto me? in truth, am I not able to honor thee?
38 І сказав Валаам до Балака: „Ось я прибув до тебе тепер. Чи потра́плю я сказати щось? Те слово, що Бог вкладе в уста мої, його тільки я буду промовляти“.
And Bil'am said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee; have I now any power whatever to speak the least? the word that God may put in my mouth, that alone must I speak.
39 І пішов Валаам із Балаком, і прибули́ вони до Кір'ят-Хуцоту.
And Bil'am went with Balak, and they came unto Kiryath-chuzoth.
40 І прині́с Балак на жертву худо́бу велику та худобу дрібну́, і послав Валаамові та вельможам, що з ним.
And Balak slew oxen and sheep, and sent to Bil'am and to the princes that were with him.
41 І сталося вранці, і взяв Балак Валаама, та й вивів його на Бамот-Баал, щоб побачив ізвідти тільки частину того народу.
And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Bil'am, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, and he saw thence a portion of the people.
