1 І сказали йому му́жі Єфремові: „Що́ це за річ зробив ти нам, що не покликав нас, коли йшов воювати з Мідія́ном?“І вони сильно спереча́лися з ним.
And the men of Ephraim say unto him, 'What [is] this thing thou hast done to us — not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?' and they strive with him severely;
2 І сказав він до них: „Що я зробив тепер таке, як ви? Чи не ліпше пізні виноградини Єфремові від авіезерового винобра́ння?
and he saith unto them, 'What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?
3 У вашу руку Бог дав мідіянітянських князі́в, — Орева та Зеева, — і що́ міг я зробити, як ви?“Тоді заспоко́ївся їхній дух проти нього, як він сказав оце сло́во.
Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?' Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.
4 І прийшов Гедеон до Йорда́ну, і перейшов він та три сотні мужів, що з ним, зму́чені в пого́ні.
And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who [are] with him — wearied, and pursuing,
5 І сказав він до людей Сукко́ту: „Дайте но буханці́в хліба наро́дові, що за мною, бо вони зму́чені, а я женуся за Зевахом та Цалмунною, царями мідіянітянськими“.
and he saith to the men of Succoth, 'Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who [are] at my feet, for they [are] wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.'
6 І сказали суккотські князі: „Чи рука Зеваха та Цалмунна вже в твоїй руці, щоб давати хліб твоєму ві́йську?“
And the heads of Succoth say, 'Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?'
7 І сказав Гедео́н: „Тому́ то, коли Господь дасть у мою руку Зеваха та Цалмунну, то я буду молотити ваше тіло пустинними те́рнями та колючка́ми!“
And Gideon saith, 'Therefore — in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand — I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.'
8 І пішов він звідти до Пенуїлу, і говорив до них те саме. А люди Пеиуїлу відповіли́ йому, як відповіли́ люди Сукко́ту.
And he goeth up thence [to] Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.
9 І він сказав також до людей Пенуїлу, говорячи: „Коли я верта́тимусь у ми́рі, — розіб'ю́ оцю ве́жу“.
And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, 'In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.'
10 А Зевах та Цалмунна були в Каркорі, і з ними їхні табо́ри, близько п'ятнадцяти тисяч, — усі позосталі з усього табо́ру синів Кедему. А тих, що впали, — було сто й двадцять тисяч чоловіка, що витяга́ли меча.
And Zebah and Zalmunna [are] in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling [are] a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.
11 А Гедеон пішов дорогою Шехуне-Боголіму зо сходу до Коваху й Йоґбеги. І розбив він табо́ра, коли та́бір був безпечний.
And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;
12 І втікали Зевах та Цалмунна, а він гнався за ними. І він схопи́в обох мідіянітянських царів, Зеваха та Цалмунну, а на ввесь та́бір нагнав жаху.
and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.
13 І вернувся Гедео́н, син Йоашів, із війни з Маале-Гахересу.
And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,
14 І захопи́в він юнака́ з людей Суккоту, та й запита́вся його. І той написав йому ймення князів Суккоту та старши́х його, — сімдеся́т і сім чоловіка.
and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders — seventy and seven men.
15 І прийшов він до людей Сукко́ту та й сказав їм: „Ось Зе́вах та Цалму́нна, що ви ображали мене, говорячи: Чи рука Зеваха та Цалмунни тепер у твоїй руці, що дамо́ хліба твоїм змученим лю́дям?“
And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, 'Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who [are] wearied bread?'
16 І схопи́в він старши́х того міста, і пустинне те́рня та колючки́, і побив ними суккотських людей.
And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,
17 А пенуїльську ве́жу розбив, і позабивав людей того міста.
and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.
18 І сказав він до Зе́ваха та до Цалму́нни: „Які ті люди, що ви повбивали на Фаво́рі?“А ті сказали: „Як ти, так вони — одне, мають вигляд царськи́х синів“.
And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, 'How — the men whom ye slew in Tabor?' and they say, 'As thou — so they, one — as the form of the king's sons.'
19 А він сказав: „То брати мої, сини моєї матері. Як живий Господь, — коли б ви були позоста́вили їх при житті, не повбивав би я вас!“
And he saith, 'My brethren — sons of my mother — they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive — I had not slain you.'
20 І сказав він до Єтера, свого пе́рвенця: „Устань, — забий їх!“Та той юна́к не витяг свого меча, бо боявся, — бо він був ще мали́й.
And he saith to Jether his first-born, 'Rise, slay them;' and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he [is] yet a youth.
21 І сказав Зевах та Цалмунна: „Устань ти, і кинься на нас, бо по чоловікові сила його“. І встав Гедеон, і вбив Зеваха та Цалмунну, і забрав оздо́бні мі́сяці, що були на шиях їхніх верблю́дів.
And Zebah saith — also Zalmunna — 'Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man — his might;' and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which [are] on the necks of their camels.
22 І сказали Ізраїлеві мужі до Гедеона: „Пануй над нами і ти, і син твій, і син твого сина, бо ти спас нас від руки Мідія́на“.
And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, 'Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.'
23 І сказав до них Гедеон: „Не буду панувати над вами я, і не буде панувати над вами син мій, — Господь панува́тиме над вами“.
And Gideon saith unto them, 'I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.'
24 І сказав до них Гедеон: „Попрошу́ від вас проха́ння, — і дайте мені кожен носову́ сере́жку зо своєї здо́бичі“, — бо в них, мідіянітян, були золоті носові сере́жки, бо ізмаїльтя́ни вони.
And Gideon saith unto them, 'Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they [are] Ishmaelites.'
25 І сказали вони: „Дати — дамо́“. І розтягнули одежу, і кидали туди кожен носову сере́жку зо своєї здо́бичі.
And they say, 'We certainly give;' and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;
26 І була вага золотих носових сере́жок, що він просив, тисяча й сімсо́т шеклів золота, крім оздобних місяців, і сере́жок, і пу́рпурових шат, що були на мідіянітянських царях, і окрім наши́йників, що на шиях їхніх верблю́дів.
and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which [are] on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which [are] on the necks of their camels,
27 А Гедеон зробив із того ефо́да, і поставив його́ у своєму місті, в Офрі. І за ним чинив там пере́люб увесь Ізра́їль, і це стало па́сткою для Гедеона та для дому його.
and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.
28 І був упоко́рений Мідіян перед Ізраїлевими синами, і він більш не підіймав своєї голови́. І Край мав мир сорок літ за Гедеонових днів.
And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 І пішов Єруббаа́л, син Йоашів, та й осівся в своїм домі.
And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,
30 А в Гедеона було сімдеся́т синів, що походили зо сте́гон його, бо він мав багато жіно́к.
and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;
31 А нало́жниця його, що в Сихемі, — породила йому сина й вона, а він назвав ім'я́ йому: Авімелех.
and his concubine, who [is] in Shechem, hath born to him — even she — a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.
32 І помер Гедео́н, син Йоашів, у добрій сивизні́, і був похо́ваний у гробі Йоаша, батька свого, в Офрі авіезеровій.
And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.
33 І сталося, як помер Гедео́н, то Ізра́їлеві сини́ зно́ву чинили пере́люб і́з Ваа́лами, і поставили собі Ваал-Берита за бога.
And it cometh to pass, when Gideon [is] dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;
34 І Ізраїлеві сини не пам'ятали Господа, Бога свого, що спасав їх від руки всіх їхніх навко́лишніх ворогів.
and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,
35 І не зроби́ли вони ми́лости з домом Єруббаа́ла-Гедеона такої, як усе те добро, яке він зробив для Ізраїля.
neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal — Gideon — according to all the good which he did with Israel.
