1 I сталося по смерті Ісуса, і питалися Ізра́їлеві сини Господа, говорячи: „Хто з нас ви́йде спе́реду на ханаане́янина, щоб воювати з ним?“
And it came to pass, after the death of Joshua, that the sons of Israel asked of Yahweh, saying, —Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites, first, to make war upon them?
2 І сказав Господь: „Юда пі́де. Оце Я дав Край у його руку“.
And Yahweh said—Judah, shall go, —lo! I have delivered the land into his power.
3 І сказав Юда до Симеона, свого брата: „Іди зо мною на мій жеребо́к, і бу́демо воювати з ханаанеянином, то піду́ й я з тобою на твій жеребо́к“. І пішов із ним Симео́н.
Then said Judah, unto Simeon his brother—Come up with me into the territory allotted me, and let us make war on the Canaanites, then will, I also, go with thee, into thy territory. So Simeon went with him.
4 І піднявся Юда, а Господь дав ханаанеянина та періззеянина в їхню руку. І вони побили їх у Безеку, — десять тисяч чоловіка.
And Judah went up, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, —and they smote them in Bezek, ten thousand men.
5 І знайшли вони в Безеку Адоні-Безека, і воювали з ним, і побили ханаане́янина та періззе́янина.
And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, and fought with him, —and smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 І втікав Адоні-Безек, а вони гналися за ним, і злови́ли його, і повідру́бували великі пальці його рук та його ніг.
But Adoni-bezek fled, and they pursued him, —and took him, and cut off his thumbs, and his great toes.
7 І сказав Адоні-Безек: „Сімдеся́т царів з відру́баними великими пальцями їхніх рук та їхніх ніг часто збирали поживу під столом моїм. Як робив я, так відплатив мені Бог!“
Then said Adoni-bezek—Seventy kings, with their thumbs and great toes cut off, have been picking up crumbs under my table, as I have done, so, hath God requited me. And they brought him into Jerusalem, and he died there.
8 І воювали Юдині сини з Єрусалимом, і здобули́ його, і побили його ві́стрям меча́, а місто пустили з огнем.
And the sons of Judah made war upon Jerusalem, and captured it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, —and, the city, they set on fire.
9 А потому Юдині сини зійшли воювати з ханаане́янином, ме́шканцем гори, і Неґеву, і Шефелі.
And, afterwards, the sons of Judah went down to make war upon the Canaanites, —dwelling in the hill country, and in the south, and in the lowland.
10 І пішов Юда до ханаанеянина, що сидить у Хевроні, — а ім'я́ Хеврону було колись: Кір'ят-Арба, — і побили Шешая, й Ахімана та Талмая.
And Judah went against the Canaanites who were dwelling in Hebron, now, the name of Hebron, formerly, was Kiriath-arba, —and they smote Sheshai and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 А звідти пішов він до мешканців Девіру, а ім'я́ Девіру колись: Кір'ят-Сефер.
And he went from thence, against the inhabitants of Debir, —now, the name of Debir, formerly, was Kiriath-sepher.
12 І сказав Калев: „Хто поб'є Кір'ят-Сефер та здобуде його, то дам йому Ахсу, дочку мою, за жінку“.
And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and captureth it, I will give unto him Achsah my daughter, to wife.
13 І здобув його Отніїл, син Кенезів, брат Калевів, молодший від нього. І він дав йому свою дочку́ Ахсу за жінку.
Then Othniel, son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it, —and he gave him Achsah his daughter, to wife.
14 І сталося, коли вона прийшла, то намовила його жадати по́ля від її батька. І зійшла вона з осла, а Калев сказав їй: „Що тобі?“
And it came pass, when she came, that she moved him to ask of her father a field, and, when she alighted from off the ass, Caleb said unto her—What aileth thee?
15 І вона сказала йому: „Дай мені дара благословення! Бо ти дав мені землю суху, то дай мені водні джере́ла“. І Калев дав їй Ґуллот-горі́шній та Ґуллот-до́лішній.
And she said unto him—Give me a present; for, south land, hast thou given me, give me therefore pools of water. So Caleb gave her Upper-pools, and Lower-pools.
16 А сини Кенея, Мойсеєвого тестя, пішли з міста Пальм з Юдиними синами до Юдиної пустині, що на півдні Араду. І пішов він, і осівся з народом.
Now, the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, had come up from the city of palm-trees, with the sons of Judah, into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad, —so they went and dwelt with the people.
17 І пішов Юда з Симеоном, своїм братом, та й побили ханаанеянина, ме́шканця Цефату, і вчинили його закляттям. І назвав ім'я́ того міста: Хорма.
Then went Judah, with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites dwelling in Zephath, —and devoted it to destruction, and the name of the city was called Hormah.
18 І здобув Юда Аззу та границю її, й Ашкелон та границю його, і Екрон та границю його.
And Judah captured Gaza with the boundaries thereof, and Ashkelon, with the boundaries thereof, —and Ekron, with the boundaries thereof.
19 І був Господь з Юдою, і він повиганяв мешканців гори. Та не міг він повиганяти ме́шканців долини, бо вони мали залізні колесни́ці.
And it same to pass that Yahweh was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, —but did not dispossess the inhabitants of the vale, because they had, chariots of iron.
20 І дали Калевові Хевро́н, як говорив був Мойсей, і він вигнав звідти трьох ве́летнів.
So they gave unto Caleb Hebron, as spake Moses, —and he drave out from thence the three sons of Anak.
21 А євусеянина, ме́шканця Єрусалиму, не вигнали Веніяминові сини, — і осів євусеянин із Веніяминовими синами в Єрусалимі, і сидя́ть тут аж до цього дня.
But, the Jebusites dwelling in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not drive out, —but the Jebusites have dwelt with the sons of Benjamin, in Jerusalem, unto this day.
22 І пішов також дім Йо́сипів до Бет-Елу, а Господь був з ними.
Then went up the house of Joseph—they also, —unto Bethel, —and, Yahweh, was with them.
23 І ви́відав Йо́сипів дім у Бет-Елі, а ім'я́ того міста колись було Луз.
And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel, —now, the name of the city, formerly, was, Luz.
24 І побачили сторожі́ чоловіка, що виходив із того міста, та й сказали до нього: „Покажи нам вхід до міста, а ми вчинимо тобі ми́лість!“
So the watchers saw a man, coming forth from the city, —and they said unto him—Shew us, we pray thee, the way to get into the city, and we will deal with thee, in lovingkindness.
25 І він показав їм вхід до міста, і вони побили те місто ві́стрям меча, а того чоловіка та ввесь його рід відпустили.
And he shewed them the way to get into the city, and they smote the city, with the edge of the sword, —but, the man and all his family, they let go.
26 І пішов той чоловік до кра́ю хітте́ян, і збудував місто, та й назвав ім'я́ йому: Луз, — воно ім'я́ його аж до цього дня.
And the man went into the land of the Hittites, —and built a city, and called the name thereof, Luz, that, is the name thereof, unto this day.
27 А Манасія не повиганяв мешканців Бет-Шеану та його залежних міст, і Таанаху та його залежних міст, і ме́шканців Дору та його залежних міст, і ме́шканців Ївлеаму та його залежних міст, і мешканців Міґіддо та його залежних міст, — і ханаане́янин волів сидіти в тому кра́ї.
But Manasseh took not possession of Beth-shean and her towns, nor of Taanach and her towns, nor dispossessed the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam, and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo, and her towns, —but the Canaanites were determined to remain in this land;
28 І сталося, коли Ізраїль зміцни́вся, то він наклав на ханаанеянина дани́ну, але вигнати — не вигнав його.
when Israel, however, had waxed strong, they put the Canaanites under tribute, —though they, dispossessed, them not.
29 І Єфрем не вигнав ханаане́янина, що мешкає в Ґезері, — і осівся ханаанеянин серед нього в Ґезері.
And, Ephraim, dispossessed not the Canaanites who were dwelling in Gezer, —so the Canaanites remained in their midst, in Gezer.
30 Завуло́н не повиганяв ме́шканців Кітрону та мешканців Нагалолу, — і осівся ханаане́янин серед нього, і став за дани́ну.
Zebulun, dispossessed not the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol, —but the Canaanites remained in their midst, and came under tribute.
31 Аси́р не повиганяв ме́шканців Акко, і ме́шканців Сидону, і Ахлаву, і Ахзіву, і Хелби, і Афіку, і Рехову.
Asher, dispossessed not the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, —nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;
32 І осівся аси́рець серед ханаане́янина, мешканця того кра́ю, бо він не вигнав його.
but the Asherites dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, —for they dispossessed them not.
33 Нефтали́м не повиганяв ме́шканців Бет-Шемешу, і мешканців Бет-Анату, — і він осівся серед ханаанеянина, мешканця того краю, а мешканці Бет-Шемешу та Бет-Анату стали їм за данину.
Naphtali, dispossessed not the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but they dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, —and, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, and of Beth-anath, became theirs, under tribute.
34 І тиснув аморе́янин Данових синів на го́ру, бо не давав йому схо́дити на долину.
And the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, —for they suffered them not to come down into the vale;
35 І волів амореянин сидіти на горі Херес в Айялоні та в Шаалевімі, та стала сильною рука Йо́сипового дому, — він став за данину.
and, though the Amorites were determined to remain in the hill country of Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, yet was the hand of the house of Joseph heavy, so that they came under tribute.
36 А границя аморейська — від Маале-Акраббім, і від Сели та вище.
And, the boundary of the Amorites, was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upwards.
