1 Запитав тоді первосвященик: „Чи це так?“
And the chief priest said: Are these things so?
2 Степан же промовив: „Послухайте, мужі-браття й отці! Бог слави з'явивсь Авраамові, отцеві нашому, як він у Месопота́мії був, перше ніж оселився в Хара́ні,
He replied: Brethren and fathers, hear: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, while he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
3 і промовив до нього: „Вийди із своєї землі та від роду свого, та й піди до землі, що тобі покажу́“.
and said to him: Get out from your land, and from your kindred, and come into a land that I will show you.
4 Тоді він вийшов із землі халдейської, та й оселився в Хара́ні. А звідти, як умер йому ба́тько, Він переселив його в землю оцю, що на ній ви живе́те тепер.
Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran; and thence, after his father died, he removed into this land, in which you now dwell.
5 Та спа́дщини на ній Він не дав йому навіть на крок, але обіцяв „дати її на володі́ння йому й його ро́дові по нім“, хоч дитини не мав він.
And he gave him no inheritance in it, not a foot breadth: and yet he promised to give it for a possession to him, and to his posterity after him, when as yet he had no child.
6 І сказав Бог отак, що насіння його буде прихо́дьком у кра́ї чужому, і понево́лять його, і будуть гноби́ти чотириста ро́ків.
And God spoke thus: That his posterity should sojourn in a strange land, and they should enslave them and afflict them, for four hundred years.
7 „Але Я — сказав Бог — буду судити наро́д, що його понево́лить. Опісля́ ж вони вийдуть, і будуть служити Мені на цім місці“.
And the nation to which they shall be in bondage I will judge, said God; and after that, they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
8 І дав Він йому заповіта обрі́зання. І породив так Ісака, і во́сьмого дня він обрізав його. А Ісак породив Якова, а Яків — дванадцятьо́х патріярхів.
And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and thus he begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
9 А ті патріярхи поза́здрили Йо́сипові, і продали́ його до Єгипту. Але Бог був із ним,
And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
10 і його визволив від усіх його у́тисків, і дав йому благода́ть та мудрість перед фараоном, царем єгипетським, а він настановив його за правителя над Єгиптом та всім своїм домом.
and delivered him from all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharoah, king of Egypt: and he made him governor over Egypt, and his whole house.
11 А як голод прийшов на всю землю єгипетську та ханаа́нську, та велика біда, то пожи́ви тоді не знахо́дили наші батьки́.
And there came a famine, and great affliction on the whole land of Egypt, and of Chanaan: and our fathers found no sustenance.
12 Коли ж Яків зачув, що в Єгипті є збіжжя, то послав батьків наших уперше.
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time:
13 А як удруге посла́в, то був пі́знаний Йо́сип братами своїми́, і фараонові знаний став Йо́сипів рід.
and, on their second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and the kindred of Joseph were made known to Pharaoh.
14 Тоді Йо́сип послав, щоб покликати Якова, ба́тька свого, та всю родину свою — сімдеся́т і п'ять душ.
And Joseph sent and called to him his father Jacob, and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.
15 І пода́вся Яків в Єгипет, та й умер там він сам та наші батьки.
And Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers;
16 І їх перене́сли в Сихе́м, і покла́ли до гробу, що Авраам був купив за ці́ну срібла від синів Еммора Сихемового.
and they were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulcher which Abraham bought for its value in silver, from the sons of Emmor, the father of Sychem.
17 А коли наближа́всь час обі́тниці, що нею Бог клявсь Авраамові, розрісся наро́д і намно́жився в Єгипті,
And as the time of the promise which God had made with an oath to Abraham drew near, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
18 аж поки настав інший цар ув Єгипті, що не знав уже Йо́сипа.
till another king arose, who knew not Joseph.
19 Він хитро наш люд обманив, і силою змушував наших отців викидати дітей своїх, щоб вони не лишались живі.
He dealt insidiously with our race, and afflicted our fathers, so that they exposed their infants, in order that they might not live.
20 Того ча́су родився Мойсей, і га́рний він був перед Богом. Він годо́ваний був у домі батька свойо́го три місяці.
At which time Moses was born; and he was exceedingly beautiful, and was nursed three months in his father’s house.
21 А коли він був ви́кинений, то дочка фараона забрала його, та й за сина собі його викохала.
But having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and educated him as her own son.
22 І Мойсей був навче́ний всієї премудрости єгипетської, і був міцни́й у словах та в ділах своїх.
And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23 А коли йому спо́внилося сорок ро́ків, йому спало на серце відві́дати братів своїх, синів Ізраїлевих.
When he had completed his fortieth year, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
24 Як угле́дів же він, що одно́му з них ді́ється кривда, заступився, і відомсти́в за окри́вдженого, убивши єги́птянина.
And seeing one of them unjustly treated, he defended and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian.
25 Він же ду́мав, що брати́ розуміють, що рукою його Бог дає їм визво́лення, та не зрозуміли вони.
And he supposed that his brethren would understand that, by his hand, God would give them salvation: but they understood not.
26 А наступного дня, як сварились вони, він з'явився й хотів погоди́ти їх, кажучи: „Люди, ви — браття, чого один о́дного кривдите?“
And on the next day he showed himself to them, as they were fighting, and endeavored to persuade them to peace, saying, Men, you are brothers: why do you injure one another?
27 А той, що ближнього кривдив, його відіпхну́в та сказав: „Хто наставив над нами тебе за старшо́го й суддю?
But he that was doing the injury to his neighbor, thrust him away, saying, Who made you a ruler or a judge over us?
28 Чи хочеш убити й мене, як учора вбив ти єги́птянина?“
Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?
29 І втік Мойсей через слово оце, і стався прихо́дьком у землі мадія́мській, де зродив двох синів.
And at that saying Moses fled, and became a resident in the land of Midian, where he begot two sons.
30 А коли сорок ро́ків проминуло, то з'явивсь йому Ангол Господній у по́лум'ї куща́ огняно́го в пустині Сінайської гори.
And when forty years were completed, there appeared to him, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 А Мойсей, як побачив, дивувався з видіння. А коли підійшов, щоб розглянути, був голос Господній до нього:
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight, and as he was drawing near to observe it, the voice of the Lord came to him:
32 „Я Бог отців твоїх, — Бог Авраамів, і Бог Ісаків, і Бог Яковів!“І затрусився Мойсей, і не відваживсь погля́нути...
I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not observe it.
33 І промовив до нього Господь: „Скинь взуття́ з своїх ніг, бо те місце, на якому стоїш, то святая земля!
Then said the Lord to him: Loose your shoes from your feet; for the place in which you stand is holy ground.
34 Добре бачив Я у́тиск наро́ду Свого, що в Єгипті, і стогін його Я почув, і зійшов, щоб їх ви́зволити. Тепер ось іди, — Я пошлю до Єгипту тебе“.
I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them; and now come, and I will send you into Egypt.
35 Цього Мойсея, що його відцурались вони, сказавши: „Хто наставив тебе за старшо́го й суддю“, цього Бог через Ангола, якому з'явився в кущі, послав за старшо́го й визво́льника.
This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge? him God sent as a ruler and as a redeemer, by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.
36 Він їх вивів, чуда й знаме́на вчинивши в землі єгипетській, і на Червоному морі, і сорок ро́ків у пустині.
He brought them out, after he had performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness, forty years.
37 Це той Мойсей, що прорік Ізраїлевим синам: „Госпо́дь Бог вам підійме Пророка від ваших братів, як мене, — Його слухайте!“
This is that Moses, who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet like me will the Lord your God raise up for you from among your brethren; him shall you hear.
38 Це той, що в пустині на зборах був з Анголом, який промовляв йому на Сінайській горі, та з отцями нашими, і що прийняв він живі слова́, щоб їх нам передати;
This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers; he received the living oracles, that he might give them to us.
39 що його не хотіли отці наші слу́хати, але відіпхнули, і звернулися серцем своїм до Єгипту,
To him our fathers were not willing to be obedient; but they rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40 промовивши до Ааро́на: „Зроби нам богів, які йшли б перед нами, бо не знаємо, що́ сталося з тим Мойсеєм, який вивів нас із кра́ю єгипетського“.
saying to Aaron: Make us gods that shall go before us; for, as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him.
41 І зробили вони тими днями теля, — і бовва́нові жертви прино́сили та веселилися з діл своїх рук.
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Але Бог відвернувся від них, і попусти́в їх вклонятися силі небесній, як написано в книзі Пророків: „Чи зако́лення й жертви Мені ви прино́сили сорок ро́ків у пустині, о доме Ізраїлів?
But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: Your victims and your sacrifices did you offer to me for forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43 Ви ж носили наме́та Моло́хового, і зорю вашого бога Ромфа́на, зображення, що їх ви зробили, щоб вклонятися їм. Через те запрова́джу вас аж за Вавилон!“
Yes, you took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your God Remphan, images which you made to worship; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 У наших отців на пустині була скинія свідо́цтва, як Той ізвелів, Хто Мойсею казав, щоб зробив її за зразком, якого він бачив.
The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the wilderness, built as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to build it, according to the pattern which he had seen:
45 Її наші отці й узяли, і вне́сли з Ісусом у землю наро́дів, яких вигнав Бог з-перед обличчя наших отців, аж до ча́су Давида.
which our fathers, who were with Joshua, received by succession, and brought into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God continued to drive out from the face of our fathers till the days of David,
46 Він у Бога знайшов благода́ть, і просив, щоб оселю знайти для Бога Якова.
who found favor before God, and desired to find a dwelling-place for the God of Jacob.
47 І Соломон збудував Йому дім.
But Solomon built him a house.
48 Але не в рукотворнім Всевишній живе, як говорить пророк:
Yet the Most High dwells not in temples made with hands, as says the prophet:
49 „Мені небо — престол, а земля — то підніжок ногам Моїм! Який Мені дім ви збудуєте, — говорить Господь, — або місце яке для Мого відпочинку?
Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What house will you build me? says the Lord; or what is the place of my rest?
50 Хіба не рука Моя все́ це створила?“
Has not my hand made all these things?
51 О ви, твердошиї, люди серця й вух необрізаних! Ви за́вжди противитесь Духові Святому, як ваші батьки, так і ви!
You stiff-necked, and uncircumcised in heart and in ears, you do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so also do you.
52 Котро́го з пророків батьки ваші не переслідували? Вони ж тих повбивали, хто звіщав прихід Праведного, Якому тепер ви сталися зрадниками та убійниками,
Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They slew also those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers;
53 ви, що Зако́на оде́ржали через зарядження Анголів, та не зберігали його!“
who received the law by the appointment of angels, and have not kepi, it.
54 Як зачули ж оце, вони запали́лися гнівом у серцях своїх, і скрегота́ли зубами на нього.
When they heard these things, they were enraged in their hearts, and gnashed upon him with their teeth.
55 А Степан, повний Духа Святого, на небо споглянув, — і побачив Божу славу й Ісуса, що по Божій правиці стояв,
But being full of the Holy Spirit, he looked earnestly up into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;
56 і промовив: „Ось я бачу відчи́нене небо, і Сина Лю́дського, що по Божій правиці стоїть!“
and he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.
57 Та вони гучни́м голосом стали кричати та ву́ха собі затуляти, та й кинулися однодушно на нього!...
And they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and, with one consent, rushed upon him,
58 І за місто вони його ви́вели, і зачали́ побивати камінням його. А свідки плащі свої склали в ногах юнака́, який звався Са́влом.
and drove him out of the city, and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.
59 І побивали камінням Степа́на, що молився й казав: „Господи Ісусе, — прийми духа мого!“
And they stoned Stephen while he was calling on the Lord, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 Упавши ж навко́лішки, скрикнув голосом гучни́м: „Не залічи́ їм, о Господи, цього гріха́!“І, промовивши це, він спочив.
And he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice: Lord, let not this sin stand against them. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was well pleased with his death.
