1 А филисти́мляни воювали з Ізраїлем. І побігли Ізраїлеві мужі перед филисти́млянами, і па́дали тру́пами на горі Ґілбоа.
Now, the Philistines, fought against Israel, —and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and the wounded fell in Mount Gilboa.
2 І гналися филисти́мляни за Саулом та за його сина́ми. І повбивали филисти́мляни Йоната́на, і Авінадава, і Малкі-Шуя, Сау́лових синів.
And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons, —and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul.
3 І став бій тяжки́й для Саула, і лу́чники ки́нулися на нього, — і він злякався тих лу́чників.
And the battle, went sore, against Saul, and the archers discovered him with the bow, —and he was terrified because of the archers.
4 І сказав Саул до свого зброєно́ші: „Ви́тягни меча свого, і пробий мене ним, щоб не прийшли ці необрі́зані, і не знущалися на до мною!“Та не хотів зброєно́ша, бо дуже боявся. Тоді взяв Сау́л меча́ — та й упав на нього.
Therefore said Saul unto his armour-bearer, Draw out thy sword and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not, for he feared greatly, —so then Saul took the sword, and fell upon it.
5 І побачив зброєно́ша, що помер Сау́л, і впав і він на меча, та й помер...
And, when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, then, he also, fell upon the sword, and died.
6 І помер Саул і троє синів його, та ввесь його дім поме́рли ра́зом.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and, all his house, together, died.
7 І побачили всі ізра́їльтяни, що мешкали в долині, що всі втікають, та що помер Саул та сини його, то поки́дали свої міста́ й повтікали, а филисти́мляни поприхо́дили, й осі́лися в них...
And, when all the men of Israel that were in the vale saw, that they had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then forsook they their cities, and fled, and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 І сталося другого дня, і прийшли филисти́мляни, щоб пообдира́ти тру́пи, — та й знайшли Саула та синів його, що лежали на горі Ґілбоа.
And it came to pass, on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, —that they found Saul, and his sons, lying prostrate in Mount Gilboa.
9 І вони пообдира́ли його, і поне́сли го́лову його та збро́ю його, і послали в филистимські краї навко́ло, щоб сповістити в домах своїх божкі́в та наро́дові.
So they stript him, and took his head, and his armour, —and sent throughout the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it to their idols, and to the people.
10 І вони поклали збро́ю його в домі свого бога, а го́лову його прибили в домі Даґона.
And they put his armour, in the house of their gods, —but, his skull, fastened they up, in the house of Dagon.
11 І почув увесь ґілеадський Явеш про все, що́ филисти́мляни зробили Саулові,
And, when all Jabesh-Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 і встали всі хоробрі, і поне́сли Саулове тіло та тіла́ синів його, і прине́сли до Явешу, та й похова́ли їхні ко́сті під дубом в Явеші, і по́стили сім день.
then rose up all the men of valour, and took away the corpse of Saul, and the corpses of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, —and buried their bodies under the terebinth, in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 І помер Саул за своє беззако́ння, що він ним спроневі́рився проти Господа через Господнє слово, якого не тримався, а також через те, що питався віщого духа, щоб ви́відати,
Thus died Saul, for his unfaithfulness wherewith he dealt unfaithfully against Yahweh, over the word of Yahweh, which he kept not, —and, also, in asking by necromancy when he desired to enquire;
14 а не виві́дував від Господа. І Він убив його, а царство його передав Дави́дові, Єссе́євому синові.
and enquired not of Yahweh, wherefore he slew him, —and turned round the kingdom unto David, son of Jesse.
