< 1 Samuel 4 >

1 Na nnipa a wɔwɔ Israel nyinaa tee nsɛm a ɛfiri Samuel hɔ. Saa ɛberɛ no, na Israelfoɔ ne Filistifoɔ reko. Israelfoɔ akodɔm kyeree sraban wɔ Ebeneser ɛnna Filistifoɔ nso kyeree sraban wɔ Afek.
And what Samuel had said happened to all Israel. And Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
2 Filistifoɔ no to hyɛɛ Israelfoɔ akodɔm no so, dii wɔn so nkonim, na wɔkumm nnipa mpemnan.
And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and the battle spread, and Israel was routed before the Philistines; and they slew in battle array in the field about four thousand men.
3 Ɔko no baa awieeɛ, na Israel akodɔm sane kɔɔ wɔn sraban mu hɔ no, Israel mpanimfoɔ no bisaa sɛ, “Adɛn nti na Awurade ama yɛadi nkoguo ɛnnɛ yi wɔ Filistifoɔ anim yi? Momma yɛnkɔfa Awurade Apam Adaka no mfiri Silo. Sɛ yɛde kɔ ɔsa a, ɛbɛgye yɛn afiri yɛn atamfoɔ nsam.”
And the people came into the camp; and the elders of Israel said, Why has Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch ourselves the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 Enti, nnipa no somaa mmarima kɔɔ Silo, na wɔde Otumfoɔ Awurade a ɔte Kerubim ntam Apam Adaka no baeɛ. Saa ɛberɛ no na Eli mmammarima baanu Hofni ne Pinehas ka wɔn a wɔsoaa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no kɔɔ akono hɔ no ho.
So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth between the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there by the ark of the covenant of God.
5 Ɛberɛ a Israelfoɔ no hunuu sɛ wɔde Awurade Apam Adaka no reba nsraban no mu no, wɔn nyinaa bɔɔ ose maa asase wosoeɛ.
And it came to pass when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, that all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth shook.
6 Filistifoɔ no bisaa sɛ, “Ɛdeɛn na ɛrekɔ so yi? Ɛdeɛn osebɔ na ɛwɔ Hebrifoɔ sraban mu hɔ yi?” Wɔtee sɛ Awurade Apam Adaka no na abɛduru sraban mu hɔ no,
And the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, and said, What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah had come into the camp.
7 wɔsuroeɛ. Na wɔkaa sɛ, “Anyame no aba wɔn sraban mu hɔ. Ɛnneɛ, asɛm ato yɛn! Yɛnhyiaa asɛm a ɛte sei bi da.
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there has not been such a thing heretofore.
8 Hwan na ɔbɛgye yɛn afiri saa Israel anyame atumfoɔ yi nsam? Wɔne anyame a wɔde owu yadeɛ ahodoɔ nyinaa bi sɛee Misraimfoɔ, ɛberɛ a Israelfoɔ wɔ ɛserɛ so hɔ no.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
9 Monnyere mo ho, Filistifoɔ! Monnyina sɛ mmarima; anyɛ saa a, Hebrifoɔ no bɛfa mo nkoa sɛdeɛ wɔyɛɛ yɛn nkoa no.”
Shew yourselves valiant and be men, ye Philistines, that ye may not have to be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been servants to you: be men, and fight.
10 Enti, Filistifoɔ no koo anibereɛ so, dii Israelfoɔ no so bio. Wɔn a wɔkunkumm wɔn no dɔɔso. Israelfoɔ ɔpeduasa na wɔkunkumm wɔn ɛda no. Wɔn a wɔnyaa wɔn ti didii mu no dwane kɔɔ wɔn ntomadan mu.
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was routed, and they fled every man to his tent; and there was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 Wɔfaa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no, na wɔkunkumm Eli mmammarima baanu a wɔyɛ Hofni ne Pinehas no.
And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
12 Ɛda no ara, ɔbarima bi firi Benyamin abusuakuo mu dwane firii akono hɔ bɛduruu Silo. Na watete ne ntadeɛ mu, de mfuturo ahura ne tiri mu, de kyerɛ nʼawerɛhoɔ.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.
13 Na Eli retwɛn wɔ kwankyɛn baabi, pɛ sɛ ɔte ɔko no mu nsɛm, ɛfiri sɛ, na ne bo ntɔ ne yam koraa wɔ Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no ho. Ɔbɔfoɔ no ba bɛkaa asɛm a asie no, wɔtee nteateamu bi wɔ kuro no mu nyinaa.
And when he came, behold, Eli was sitting upon the seat by the way-side watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out.
14 Eli bisaa sɛ, “Saa nteateamu yi ase ne sɛn?” Ɔbɔfoɔ no yɛɛ ntɛm kɔɔ Eli,
And Eli heard the noise of the crying, and said, What is the noise of this tumult? And the man came hastily, and told Eli.
15 a na wadi mfeɛ aduɔkron nwɔtwe na nʼani afira no nkyɛn.
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.
16 Ɔka kyerɛɛ Eli sɛ, “Seesei ara na mefiri akono hɔ baeɛ. Nnɛ yi ara, na mewɔ hɔ.” Eli bisaa sɛ, “Na ɛkɔsii sɛn?”
And the man said to Eli, I am he that came out of the battle, and I have fled to-day out of the battle. And he said, What has taken place, my son?
17 Ɔbɔfoɔ no buaa sɛ, “Israelfoɔ adi nkoguo. Israel akodɔm no mpem mpem atotɔ wɔ akono hɔ. Afei, wo mmammarima baanu a ɛyɛ Hofni ne Pinehas no nso wɔawuwu, na Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no nso, wɔafa.”
And the messenger answered and said, Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 Ɔbɔfoɔ no kaa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no ho asɛm ara pɛ, Eli firi akonnwa a ɔte so mu wɔ abɔntenpono ho no te hwee nʼakyi. Ne kɔn mu buiɛ, ɛfiri sɛ, na wabɔ akɔkoraa a ne mu nso yɛ duru. Na wadi Israel anim mfirinhyia aduanan.
And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for the man was old, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 Saa ɛberɛ no na nʼase baa a ɔyɛ Pinehas yere nyem a ɔreyɛ awoɔ. Ɔtee sɛ wɔafa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no, na nʼase ne ne kunu awuwuo no, awoɔ kaa no amonom hɔ.
And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 Ɔwuu wɔ awokoɔ mu, nanso ansa na ɔrebɛwu no, mmaa a wɔregye no awoɔ no kaa sɛ, “Nsuro woawo abarimaa.” Nanso, wammua wɔn na wankasa wɔn ho nso.
And as she was dying, the women that stood by her said, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she did not answer, neither did she take it to heart.
21 Ɔbesebesee nʼano too abarimaa no edin Ikabod, “Animuonyam no wɔ he, Israel animuonyam no asa,” ɛfiri sɛ, wɔafa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no na nʼase ne ne kunu nso awuwu.
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22 Ɔkaa sɛ, “Animuonyam afiri Israel mu, ɛfiri sɛ, wɔafa Onyankopɔn Apam Adaka no.”
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark of God is taken.
