1 Temanlı Elifaz şöyle yanıtladı:
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 “Bilge kişi boş sözlerle yanıtlar mı, Karnını doğu rüzgarıyla doldurur mu?
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 Boş sözlerle tartışır, Yararsız söylevler verir mi?
Should he reason with useless talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 Tanrı korkusunu bile ortadan kaldırıyor, Tanrı'nın huzurunda düşünmeyi engelliyorsun.
Yea, you cast off fear, and restrain prayer before God.
5 Çünkü suçun ağzını kışkırtıyor, Hilekârların diliyle konuşuyorsun.
For your mouth utters your iniquity, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.
6 Kendi ağzın seni suçluyor, ben değil, Dudakların sana karşı tanıklık ediyor.
your own mouth condemns you, and not I: yea, your own lips testify against you.
7 “İlk doğan insan sen misin? Yoksa dağlardan önce mi var oldun?
Are you the first man that was born? or were you made before the hills?
8 Tanrı'nın sırrını mı dinledin de, Yalnız kendini bilge görüyorsun?
Have you heard the secret of God? and do you restrain wisdom to yourself?
9 Senin bildiğin ne ki, biz bilmeyelim? Senin anladığın ne ki, bizde olmasın?
What know you, that we know not? what understand you, which is not in us?
10 Bizde ak saçlı da yaşlı da var, Babandan bile yaşlı.
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than your father.
11 Az mı geliyor Tanrı'nın avutması sana, Söylediği yumuşak sözler?
Are the consolations of God small with you? is there any secret thing with you?
12 Niçin yüreğin seni sürüklüyor, Gözlerin parıldıyor,
Why does your heart carry you away? and what do your eyes overlook,
13 Tanrı'ya öfkeni gösteriyorsun, Ağzından böyle sözler dökülüyor?
That you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
14 “İnsan gerçekten temiz olabilir mi? Kadından doğan biri doğru olabilir mi?
What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Tanrı meleklerine güvenmiyorsa, Gökler bile O'nun gözünde temiz değilse,
Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 Haksızlığı su gibi içen İğrenç, bozuk insana mı güvenecek?
How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinks iniquity like water?
17 “Dinle beni, sana açıklayayım, Gördüğümü anlatayım,
I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 Bilgelerin atalarından öğrenip bildirdiği, Gizlemediği gerçekleri;
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 O atalar ki, ülke yalnız onlara verilmişti, Aralarına henüz yabancı girmemişti.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 Kötü insan yaşamı boyunca kıvranır, Zorbaya ayrılan yıllar sayılıdır.
The wicked man labors with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 Dehşet sesleri kulağından eksilmez, Esenlik içindeyken soyguncunun saldırısına uğrar.
A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 Karanlıktan kurtulabileceğine inanmaz, Kılıç onu gözler.
He believes not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 ‘Nerede?’ diyerek ekmek ardınca dolaşır, Karanlık günün yanıbaşında olduğunu bilir.
He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Acı ve sıkıntı onu yıldırır, Savaşa hazır bir kral gibi onu yener.
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 Çünkü Tanrı'ya el kaldırmış, Her Şeye Gücü Yeten'e meydan okumuş,
For he stretches out his hand against God, and strengthens himself against the Almighty.
26 Kalın, yumrulu kalkanıyla O'na inatla saldırmıştı.
He runs upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 “Yüzü semirdiği, Göbeği yağ bağladığı halde,
Because he covers his face with his fatness, and makes fatness on his flanks.
28 Yıkılmış kentlerde, Taş yığınına dönmüş oturulmaz evlerde oturacak,
And he dwells in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabits, which are ready to become heaps.
29 Zengin olmayacak, serveti tükenecek, Malları ülkeye yayılmayacaktır.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 Karanlıktan kaçamayacak, Filizlerini alev kurutacak, Tanrı'nın ağzından çıkan solukla yok olacaktır.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Boş şeye güvenerek kendini aldatmasın, Çünkü ödülü de boş olacaktır.
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 Gününden önce işi tamamlanacak, Dalı yeşermeyecektir.
It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 Asma gibi koruğunu dökecek, Zeytin ağacı gibi çiçeğini dağıtacaktır.
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 Çünkü tanrısızlar sürüsü kısır olur, Rüşvetçilerin çadırlarını ateş yakıp yok eder.
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 Fesada gebe kalıp kötülük doğururlar, İçleri yalan doludur.”
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepares deceit.
