1 Sezariye'de Kornelius adında bir adam vardı. “İtalyan” taburunda yüzbaşıydı.
Now a certain man in Caesarea, named Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2 Dindar bir adamdı. Hem kendisi hem de bütün ev halkı Tanrı'dan korkardı. Halka çok yardımda bulunur, Tanrı'ya sürekli dua ederdi.
a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and praying to God always,
3 Bir gün saat üç sularında, bir görümde Tanrı'nın bir meleğinin kendisine geldiğini açıkça gördü. Melek ona, “Kornelius” diye seslendi.
saw in a vision plainly, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying to him, Cornelius!
4 Kornelius korku içinde gözlerini ona dikti, “Ne var, efendim?” dedi. Melek ona şöyle dedi: “Duaların ve sadakaların anılmak üzere Tanrı katına ulaştı.
And he, looking steadily at him, and becoming affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said to him, Thy prayers and thine alms have come up for a memorial before God.
5 Şimdi Yafa'ya adam yolla, Petrus olarak da tanınan Simun'u çağırt.
And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, who is surnamed Peter;
6 Petrus, evi deniz kıyısında bulunan Simun adlı bir dericinin yanında kalıyor.”
he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the seaside.
7 Kendisiyle konuşan melek uzaklaştıktan sonra Kornelius, iki uşağıyla özel yardımcılarından dindar bir askeri çağırdı.
And when the angel that spoke to him had departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of those who waited on him,
8 Kendilerine her şeyi anlattıktan sonra onları Yafa'ya gönderdi.
and having told them every thing sent them to Joppa.
9 Ertesi gün onlar yol alıp kente yaklaşırlarken, saat on iki sularında Petrus dua etmek için dama çıktı.
On the morrow, as they were on their journey, and were drawing near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.
10 Acıkınca da yemek istedi. Yemek hazırlanırken Petrus kendinden geçti.
And he became very hungry and wished to eat; but while they were making ready, a trance came upon him,
11 Göğün açıldığını ve büyük bir çarşafı andıran bir nesnenin dört köşesinden sarkıtılarak yeryüzüne indirildiğini gördü.
and he beheld heaven opened, and a sort of vessel descending, as it were a large sheet having cords at the four corners, and let down upon the earth;
12 Çarşafın içinde, yeryüzünde yaşayan her türden dört ayaklı hayvanlar, sürüngenler ve kuşlar vardı.
wherein were all the four-footed beasts and creeping things of the earth, and birds of the air.
13 Bir ses ona, “Kalk Petrus, kes ve ye!” dedi.
And there came a voice to him, Arise, Peter; slay, and eat.
14 “Asla olmaz, ya Rab!” dedi Petrus. “Hiçbir zaman bayağı ya da murdar herhangi bir şey yemedim.”
But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common and unclean.
15 Ses tekrar, ikinci kez duyuldu; Petrus'a, “Tanrı'nın temiz kıldıklarına sen bayağı deme” dedi.
And a voice came to him again, the second time, That which God hath cleansed, call not thou common.
16 Bu, üç kez tekrarlandı. Sonra çarşafı andıran nesne hemen göğe alındı.
This was done three times; and the vessel was immediately taken up into heaven.
17 Petrus şaşkınlık içindeydi. Gördüğü görümün ne anlama gelebileceğini düşünürken, Kornelius'un gönderdiği adamlar sora sora Simun'un evinin kapısına kadar geldiler.
Now, while Peter was doubting within himself what the vision which he had seen meant, lo! the men who were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate;
18 Evdekilere seslenerek, “Petrus diye tanınan Simun burada mı kalıyor?” diye sordular.
and they called, and asked whether Simon, surnamed Peter, lodged there.
19 Petrus hâlâ görümün anlamını düşünürken Ruh ona, “Bak, üç kişi seni arıyor” dedi.
And while Peter was meditating on the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, men are seeking thee;
20 “Haydi kalk, aşağı in. Hiç çekinmeden onlarla git. Çünkü onları ben gönderdim.”
but arise, and go down, and go with them, without scruple; for I have sent them.
21 Petrus aşağı inip adamlara, “Aradığınız kişi benim” dedi. “Gelişinizin sebebi ne acaba?”
And Peter went down to the men and said, Behold, I am he whom ye are seeking; for what cause have ye come?
22 “Doğru ve Tanrı'dan korkan, bütün Yahudi ulusunca iyiliğiyle tanınan, Kornelius adında bir yüzbaşı var” dediler. “Kutsal bir melek ona, seni evine çağırtıp senin söyleyeceklerini dinlemesini buyurdu.”
And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by a holy angel to send for thee to his house, and to hear words from thee.
23 Bunun üzerine Petrus onları içeri alıp konuk etti. Ertesi gün Petrus kalktı, onlarla birlikte yola çıktı. Yafa'daki kardeşlerden bazıları da ona katıldı.
Then he called them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24 İkinci gün Sezariye'ye vardılar. Bu arada Kornelius, akraba ve yakın dostlarını toplamış onları bekliyordu.
And the morrow after, he came into Caesarea. And Cornelius was expecting them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
25 Eve giren Petrus'u karşıladı, tapınırcasına ayaklarına kapandı.
And as Peter came in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and did him reverence.
26 Petrus ise onu ayağa kaldırarak, “Kalk, ben de insanım” dedi.
But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
27 Petrus Kornelius'la konuşa konuşa içeri girdiğinde birçok insanın toplanmış olduğunu gördü.
And while talking with him, he went in, and found many who had come together.
28 Onlara şöyle dedi: “Bir Yahudi'nin başka ulustan biriyle ilişki kurmasının, onu ziyaret etmesinin töremize aykırı olduğunu bilirsiniz. Oysa Tanrı bana, hiç kimseye bayağı ya da murdar dememem gerektiğini gösterdi.
And he said to them, Ye know that it is an unlawful thing for a Jew to keep company with one of another nation, or to come near him; but God showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
29 Bu nedenle, çağrıldığım zaman hiç itiraz etmeden geldim. Şimdi, beni ne amaçla çağırttığınızı sorabilir miyim?”
Wherefore I came without objection, when sent for. I ask therefore, for what reason did ye send for me?
30 Kornelius, “Üç gün önce bu sıralarda, saat üçte evimde dua ediyordum” dedi. “Birdenbire, parlak giysili bir adam önüme çıkıverdi.
And Cornelius said, Four days ago, I was fasting till this hour; and at the ninth hour was praying in my house; and lo! a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 ‘Kornelius’ dedi, ‘Tanrı senin duanı işitti, verdiğin sadakaları andı.
and said, Cornelius, thy prayer hath been heard, and thine alms have been remembered before God.
32 Yafa'ya adam yolla, Petrus diye tanınan Simun'u çağırt. O, deniz kıyısında oturan derici Simun'un evinde kalıyor.’
Send therefore to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea-side; and he, when he cometh, will speak to thee.
33 Bunun üzerine sana hemen adam yolladım. Sen de lütfedip geldin. İşte şimdi biz hepimiz, Rab'bin sana buyurduğu her şeyi dinlemek üzere Tanrı'nın önünde toplanmış bulunuyoruz.”
I therefore sent to thee immediately; and thou hast done well in coming here. Now therefore we are all present before God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee from the Lord.
34 O zaman Petrus söz alıp şöyle dedi: “Tanrı'nın insanlar arasında ayrım yapmadığını, ama kendisinden korkan ve doğru olanı yapan kişiyi, ulusuna bakmaksızın kabul ettiğini gerçekten anlıyorum.
And Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons,
but in every nation he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is acceptable to him—
36 Tanrı'nın, herkesin Rabbi olan İsa Mesih aracılığıyla esenliği müjdeleyerek İsrailoğulları'na ilettiği bildiriden haberiniz vardır.
the word which he sent to the sons of Israel, publishing glad tidings of peace through Jesus Christ; he is Lord of all men.
37 Yahya'nın vaftiz çağrısından sonra Celile'den başlayarak bütün Yahudiye'de meydana gelen olayları, Tanrı'nın, Nasıralı İsa'yı nasıl Kutsal Ruh'la ve kudretle meshettiğini biliyorsunuz. İsa her yanı dolaşarak iyilik yapıyor, İblis'in baskısı altında olanların hepsini iyileştiriyordu. Çünkü Tanrı O'nunla birlikteydi.
Ye yourselves know what was spoken of through the whole of Judaea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached,
relating to Jesus of Nazareth, that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were overpowered by the Devil; for God was with him.
39 “Biz İsa'nın, Yahudiler'in ülkesinde ve Yeruşalim'de yaptıklarının hepsine tanık olduk. O'nu çarmıha gerip öldürdüler.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also slew by hanging him on a cross.
40 Ama Tanrı O'nu üçüncü gün diriltti ve açıkça görünmesini sağladı.
Him God raised up on the third day, and caused him to be manifested,
41 İsa halkın tümüne değil de, Tanrı'nın önceden seçtiği tanıklara –ölümden dirilmesinden sonra kendisiyle birlikte yiyip içen bizlere– göründü.
not to all the people, but to witnesses before appointed by God, to ourselves, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead;
42 Tanrı tarafından ölülerle dirilerin Yargıcı olarak atanan kişinin kendisi olduğunu halka duyurmamızı, buna tanıklık etmemizi buyurdu.
and he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is he who hath been appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
43 Peygamberlerin hepsi O'nunla ilgili tanıklıkta bulunuyorlar. Şöyle ki, O'na inanan herkesin günahları O'nun adıyla bağışlanır.”
To him all the prophets bear witness, that through his name every one that believeth in him shall receive forgiveness of sins.
44 Petrus daha bu sözleri söylerken Kutsal Ruh, konuşmayı dinleyen herkesin üzerine indi.
While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all that heard the word.
45 Petrus'la birlikte gelen Yahudi imanlılar, Kutsal Ruh armağanının öteki uluslardan olanların da üzerine dökülmesini şaşkınlıkla karşıladılar.
And those of the circumcision who believed, as many as came with Peter, were astonished that on the gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit;
46 Çünkü onların, bilmedikleri dillerle konuşup Tanrı'yı yücelttiklerini duyuyorlardı. O zaman Petrus, “Bunlar, tıpkı bizim gibi Kutsal Ruh'u almışlar. Suyla vaftiz olmalarına kim engel olabilir?” dedi.
for they heard them speaking with tongues, and magnifying God. Then answered Peter,
Can any one forbid water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit even as we have?
48 Böylelikle onların İsa Mesih adıyla vaftiz olmalarını buyurdu. Sonra onlar Petrus'a, birkaç gün yanlarında kalması için ricada bulundular.
And he commanded that they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they entreated him to remain some days.
