< ʻOpataia 1 >

1 Ko e meʻa hā mai kia ʻOpataia.
The vision of 'Obadiah: Thus hath said the Lord Eternal concerning Edom, A rumor have we heard from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her to war.
2 Vakai, kuo u fakasiʻisiʻi koe ʻi he lotolotonga ʻoe hiteni: ʻoku lahi ho manukiʻi.
Behold, I make thee small among the nations: thou shalt be greatly despised.
3 Kuo kākaaʻi koe ʻe he laukau ʻa ho loto, ʻa koe ʻoku nofo ʻi he ngaahi ʻanaʻi maka, pea ʻoku māʻolunga ho nofoʻanga; ʻaia ʻoku pehē ʻi hono loto, ‘Ko hai ʻe fakahifo au ki lalo ki he kelekele?’”
The presumption of thy heart hath beguiled thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
4 ‌ʻOku pehē ʻe Sihova, “Neongo ʻoku ke hakeakiʻi koe ʻo hangē ko e ʻikale, pea ʻoku ke fokotuʻu ho pununga ʻi he lotolotonga ʻoe ngaahi fetuʻu, ka te u fakahifo koe mei ai.
Though thou wert to rise as high as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.
5 He ka ne haʻu kiate koe ʻae kau kaihaʻa, ʻae kau kaihaʻa ʻi he pō, (ʻoiauē ho motuhi!) ʻIkai te nau kaihaʻasi ke ʻoua ke lahi ʻenau meʻa? Ka ne haʻu kiate koe ʻae kau toli kālepi, ʻikai kuo nau fakatoe ha ngaahi kālepi?
How? are thieves come to thee? or night-prowling robbers? how destroyed art thou! would they not have stolen till they had enough? if grape-gatherers had come to thee, would they not have left some gleanings?
6 ‌ʻOiauē hono vakili ʻoe ngaahi meʻa ʻa ʻIsoa! Hono hakule ʻo ʻene ngaahi meʻa fufū!
How are [the treasures] of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things laid open!
7 Ko e kau tangata kotoa pē naʻe kau fakataha mo koe, kuo nau ʻomi koe ʻo aʻu ki he mata fonua, kuo kākaaʻi koe ʻe he kau tangata naʻe melino mo koe, pea kuo ikuʻi koe; ʻakinautolu naʻe kai ho mā kuo nau ʻai ʻae tauhele ʻi lalo ʻiate koe: ʻoku ʻikai siʻi ha poto ʻiate ia.”
Up to the border have accompanied thee all the men of thy confederacy; beguiled, overcome thee have the men that were at peace with thee: [they that eat] thy bread have struck thee secretly a wound. There is no understanding in him.
8 ‌ʻOku pehē ʻe Sihova, “ʻIkai te u fakaʻauha ʻi he ʻaho ko ia ʻae kau tangata poto mei ʻItomi, pea mo e ʻilo mei he moʻunga ʻo ʻIsoa?
Shall I not on that same day, saith the Lord, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
9 Pea ʻe ilifia hoʻo kau tangata mālohi, ʻe Timani, koeʻuhi ke ʻauha ʻi he tāmate ʻakinautolu kotoa pē ʻoku ʻi he moʻunga ʻo ʻIsoa.
And thy mighty men, O Theman, shall be dismayed, in order that every one from the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
10 Koeʻuhi ko hoʻo fai fakamālohi ki ho tokoua ko Sēkope, ʻe ʻufiʻufi ʻaki koe ʻae mā, pea te ke ʻauha ʻo lauikuonga.
Because of thy violence against thy brother Jacob shall shame cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
11 ‌ʻI he ʻaho ko ia naʻa ke tutuʻu mo e faʻahi ʻe taha, ʻi he ʻaho ko ia naʻe ʻave pōpula ʻe he kakai muli ʻa ʻene ngaahi kongakau, pea naʻe hū ʻae kau muli ki hono ngaahi matapā, pea nau talotalo ki Selūsalema, ko koe naʻa ke hangē ko e tokotaha ʻokinautolu.
On the day that thou stoodest on the other side, on the day that strangers carried away captive his army, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots over Jerusalem, also thou wast as any one of them.
12 Ka naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo sio ki he ʻaho ʻo ho tokoua, ʻi he ʻaho ko ia naʻa ne hoko ko e muli; pea naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo vikiviki ki he fānau ʻa Siuta ʻi he ʻaho ʻo honau fakaʻauha; pea naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo lea fielahi ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻenau mamahi.
But thou shouldst not have looked on [pleased] at the day of thy brother, on the day that he was delivered up to strangers; neither shouldst thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah on the day of their destruction; nor should thou have spoken proudly on the day of distress.
13 Naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo hū ʻi he matapā ʻo hoku kakai, ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻenau tuʻutāmaki; ʻio, naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo sio ki heʻenau mamahi ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻenau tuʻutāmaki, pe ala ki heʻenau koloa ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻenau tuʻutāmaki;
Thou shouldst not have entered into the gate of my people on the day of their calamity; yea, thou too shouldst not have looked [pleased] on their affliction on the day of their calamity; nor have laid hands on their army on the day of their calamity;
14 Pea naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo tutuʻu ʻi he mangaʻi hala, ke motuhi ʻakinautolu ʻi ai naʻe hao; pea naʻe ʻikai totonu hoʻo tukuange ʻakinautolu ʻi ai, naʻe toe ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe mamahi.
Neither shouldst thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldst thou have delivered up those of his that did remain on the day of distress.
15 He ʻoku ofi ʻae ʻaho ʻo Sihova ki he kakai hiteni; ʻo hangē ko ia kuo ke fai ʻe fai pehē kiate koe: ʻe foki mai hoʻo totongi ki ho ʻulu ʻoʻou.
For near is the day of the Lord over all the nations: as thou hast done, shall it be done unto thee; thy deeds shall return upon thy own head.
16 Hangē kuo mou inu ʻi hoku moʻunga tapu, ʻe pehē ʻae inu maʻuaipē ʻe he hiteni kotoa pē, ʻio, te nau inu mo folo hifo, pea te nau hoko ʻo hangē ko e kakai naʻe ʻikai.
For as ye have drunk upon my holy mount, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and they shall reel about, and they shall be as though they had not been.
17 Ka ʻe ʻi ai ʻae fakahaofi ʻi he moʻunga ko Saione, pea mo e māʻoniʻoni; pea ʻe maʻu ʻe he fale ʻo Sēkope ʻa honau tofiʻa.
But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and it shall be holy: and the house of Jacob shall again possess their inheritances.
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau become stubble, and they shall set them on fire, and devour them; and there shall not be any one remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.
19 Pea ʻe maʻu ʻekinautolu ʻoe potu tonga ʻae moʻunga ʻo ʻIsoa; pea ko kinautolu ʻoe toafa, ʻae kakai Filisitia, pea te nau maʻu ʻae ngaahi ngoue ʻo ʻIfalemi, mo e ngaahi ngoue ʻo Samēlia: pea ʻe maʻu ʻe Penisimani ʻa Kiliati.
And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the lowlands, the Philistines; and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin [shall possess] Gil'ad.
20 Pea ʻe maʻu ʻe he kau pōpula ʻi he kau tau ni ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, [ʻae fonua ]ʻoe kakai Kēnani ʻo aʻu ki Salefati; pea ʻe maʻu ʻe he kau pōpula ʻo Selūsalema, ʻaia ʻoku ʻi Sefalati, ʻae ngaahi kolo ʻoe potu tonga.
And the exiles of this host of the children of Israel that are [with] the Canaanites, as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
21 Pea ʻe ʻalu hake ʻae kau fakamoʻui ki he moʻunga ko Saione, ke fakamaau ʻae moʻunga ʻo ʻIsoa; pea ʻe hoko ia ko e puleʻanga ʻo Sihova.
And deliverers shall go up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau: and the kingdom shall be the Lord's
