1 Pea naʻe nofo ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi Sitimi, pea naʻe kamata fai ʻe he kakai ʻae feʻauaki mo e ngaahi ʻofefine ʻo Moape.
While the Israelis were camped at a place called Acacia [Grove], some of the men caused themselves to become unacceptable to God by having sex with some of the women of the Moab [people-group who lived in that area].
2 Pea naʻa nau ui ʻae kakai ki he ngaahi feilaulau ki honau ngaahi ʻotua: pea naʻe kai ʻe he kakai, mo nau punou hifo ki honau ngaahi ʻotua.
Then those women invited the men to come when the sacrifices were being offered to their gods. The Israeli men [accepted]. They went to the feasts with the women and worshiped the gods of the Moab people-group.
3 Pea naʻe feangai ʻa ʻIsileli mo Peali-Peoli: pea naʻe vela ʻae houhau ʻo Sihova ki ʻIsileli.
By doing that, those Israeli people joined the women in worshiping the god Baal [add] the Moab people-group thought lived on Peor Mountain. That caused Yahweh to become very angry with his people.
4 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Sihova kia Mōsese, “ʻAve ʻae houʻeiki ʻoe kakai, ke tautau ʻakinautolu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ʻi he ʻao ʻoe laʻā, koeʻuhi ke foki ai ʻae houhau lahi ʻo Sihova mei ʻIsileli.”
Yahweh said this to Moses/me: “Seize all the leaders of those men who are doing this and execute them while I am watching. Do that in the daytime. After you do that, I will no longer be angry with the Israeli people.”
5 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Mōsese ki he kau fakamaau ʻo ʻIsileli, “Taki taha tāmateʻi ʻa hono kau tangata naʻe feangai mo Peali-Peoli.”
So Moses/I said to the other Israeli leaders, “Each of you must execute your men who have joined [others] in worshiping Baal.”
6 Pea, vakai, naʻe haʻu ʻae tokotaha ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli ʻo ʻomi ki hono kāinga ha fefine Mitiane ʻi he ʻao ʻo Mōsese, pea ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kakai kotoa pē ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, lolotonga ʻenau tangi ʻi he veʻe matapā ʻoe fale fehikitaki ʻoe kakai.
[But later], while Moses/I and many [HYP] other people were crying at the entrance of the Sacred Tent, while they/we were watching, one of the Israeli men brought a woman from the Midian people-group into his tent [and started to have sex with her].
7 Pea ʻi he mamata ki ai ʻa Finiasi, ko e foha ʻo ʻEliesa, ko e foha ia ʻo ʻElone ko e taulaʻeiki, naʻe tuʻu hake ia ʻi he kakai, ʻo ne toʻo ʻae tao ʻi hono nima;
When Phinehas, who was the grandson of Aaron, saw that, he grabbed a spear
8 Pea naʻe muimui ia ʻi he tangata ko ia ki hono fale fehikitaki, ʻo ne hokaʻi ʻakinaua ʻo ʻasi, ʻae tangata ʻIsileli, mo e fefine, ʻi hono kete, ko ia naʻe tuku ai ʻae mahaki fakaʻauha mei he fānau ʻa ʻIsileli.
and rushed into the man’s tent. He thrust the spear completely through the man’s body and into the woman’s belly [and killed both of them]. When he did that, the (plague/serious illness) [that had started to strike the Israelis] stopped.
9 Pea ko kinautolu naʻe mate ʻi he mahaki fakaʻauha naʻe toko ua mano ma toko fā afe.
But 24,000 people had already died [from that plague].
10 Pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kia Mōsese, ʻo pehē,
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,
11 “Ko Finiasi, ko e foha ʻo ʻEliesa, ko e foha ia ʻo ʻElone ko e taulaʻeiki, kuo fakaafe ʻe ia ʻa hoku houhau mei he fānau ʻa ʻIsileli, ʻi heʻene fai feinga kiate kinautolu koeʻuhi ko au, ko ia naʻe ʻikai ai te u fakaʻauha ʻae fānau ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi hoku fuaʻa.
“Phinehas has caused me to stop being angry with the Israeli people, by being as eager as I am [to stop this sinful behavior]. I was ready to get rid of all the Israeli people because I was extremely angry, but Phinehas has prevented me from doing that.
12 Pea ko ia, ke ke pehē, Vakai, te u foaki kiate ia ʻeku fuakava ʻoe fiemālie:
Now tell him that I am making a special peace agreement with him.
In this agreement, I am promising to give to him and to his descendants the right/authority to be priests. I am doing this because [he showed that] he was very eager to honor me, his God, by stopping this sinful behavior. He has caused the Israeli people to become acceptable to me again by causing them to be forgiven for their sin.”
14 Pea ko e hingoa eni ʻoe tangata ʻIsileli naʻe tali, ʻio, ʻaia naʻe tali fakataha mo e fefine Mitiane, ko Simili, ko e foha ʻo Salu, ko e ʻeiki ʻoe fale lahi ʻi he faʻahinga ʻo Simione.
The Israeli man who was killed with the woman of the Moab people-group was named Zimri. He was the son of Salu, who was the leader of a family from the tribe of Simeon.
15 Pea ko e hingoa ʻoe fefine Mitiane naʻe tali ko Kosipi, ko e ʻofefine ʻo Sua; ko e ʻeiki ia ki he kakai, mo e fale lahi ʻi Mitiane.
The woman’s name was Cozbi. She was the daughter of Zur, who was the leader of one of the clans of the Midian people-group.
16 Pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kia Mōsese, ʻo pehē,
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,
17 “Fakafiuʻi ʻae kau Mitiane, ʻo taaʻi ʻakinautolu:
“[Take your men and] attack the Midian people-group and kill them.
18 He kuo nau fakafiuʻi ʻakimoutolu ʻaki ʻenau kākā, ʻaia kuo nau fakakākaaʻi ʻaki ʻakimoutolu ʻi he meʻa ʻa Peoli, mo e meʻa ʻa Kosipi, ko e ʻofefine ʻoe ʻeiki ʻo Mitiane, ko honau tuofefine, ʻaia kuo tāmateʻi ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe mahaki fakaʻauha koeʻuhi ko Peoli.”
They have become your enemies, because they tricked you Israeli people and induced/persuaded many of you to worship Baal, and because [one of your men had sex with] Cozbi, who was the daughter of a leader of the Midian people-group. She was killed at the time the plague [started because the people sinned] at Peor [Mountain].”
