1 Pea toki lea ai ʻa Sisu ki he kakai, mo ʻene kau ākonga.
Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples,
2 ‌ʻo pehēange, “ʻOku nofo ʻae kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi ʻi he nofoʻa ʻo Mōsese:
saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat:
3 “Ko ia ko e meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku nau fekau ke mou tokanga ki ai, mou tokanga ki ai ʻo fai: kaeʻoua naʻa mou faʻifaʻitaki ki heʻenau ngāue: he ʻoku nau enginaki, kae ʻikai fai.
all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, [these] do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.
4 He ʻoku nau haʻihaʻi ʻae ngaahi kavenga mamafa, mo fakamamahi ke fua, ʻo hilifaki ia ki he uma ʻoe kakai; ka ʻoku ʻikai ala ʻekinautolu hanau tuhu ki ai.
Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.
5 Ka ʻoku nau fai ʻenau ngāue kotoa pē ke mamata ki ai ʻae kakai: he ʻoku nau fakalaulahi honau failaketeli, mo fakalahi ʻae tapa ʻo honau kofu,
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders [of their garments],
6 ‌ʻO nau manako ki he nofoʻa māʻolunga ʻi he ngaahi kātoanga, mo e nofoʻanga lahi ʻi he ngaahi falelotu,
and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 Mo e fetapa ʻi he ngaahi faianga fakatau, pea ke ui ʻakinautolu ʻe he kakai, ‘Lāpai, Lāpai.’
and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.
8 Kae ʻoua naʻa ui ʻakimoutolu ‘Lāpai:’ he ʻoku taha pe homou ʻEiki, ko Kalaisi; pea ko e kāinga pe ʻakimoutolu kotoa pē.
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.
9 Pea ʻoua naʻa ui ha tokotaha ʻi māmani ko hoʻomou tamai; he ʻoku taha pe hoʻomou Tamai, ʻaia ʻoku ʻi he langi.
And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Pea ʻoua naʻa ui ʻakimoutolu ko e takimuʻa; he ʻoku taha pe homou Takimuʻa, ko Kalaisi.
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, [even] the Christ.
11 Ka ko ia ʻoku lahi ʻiate kimoutolu, ʻe hoko ia ko homou tauhi.
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 Pea ko ia te ne hiki hake ia, ʻe fakavaivaiʻi ia; ka ko ia ʻe fakavaivaiʻi ia, ʻe hiki hake ia.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 “Ka ʻe malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! He ʻoku mou tāpuni ʻae puleʻanga ʻoe langi ki he kakai: he ʻoku ʻikai te mou hū[ki ai], pe tuku ke hū[ki ai ]ʻakinautolu ʻoku fai ke hū[ki ai].
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.
14 ‌ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! He ʻoku mou faʻao ʻae fale ʻoe kau fefine kuo mate honau husepāniti, ʻo fakakākā ʻaki ʻae lotu fuoloa: ko ia te mou malaʻia lahi ai.
15 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi; he ʻoku mou foli ʻae tahi mo e fonua, ke fakatafoki ha tokotaha, pea ka tafoki ia, ʻoku mou ngaohi ia ko e tama ʻo heli ʻo kovi lahi hake ʻiate kimoutolu. (Geenna g1067)
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
16 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau takimuʻa kui, ʻaia ʻoku lea pehē, ‘Ko e meʻa noa pē ʻae fuakava ʻaki ʻae falelotu lahi: ka ko ia ʻe fuakava ʻaki ʻae koula ʻoe falelotu lahi, ʻe maʻu ia.’
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.
17 Ko e kau vale mo e kui: he ʻoku lahi ʻae fē, ʻae koula, pe ʻae falelotu lahi ʻaia ʻoku ne fakatapui ʻae koula?
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold?
18 Pea, ‘Ko ia ʻe fuakava ʻaki ʻae ʻesifeilaulau, ko e meʻa noa pē: ka ko ia ʻoku fuakava ki he meʻa foaki ʻoku tuku ai, ʻe maʻu pe ia.’
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor.
19 Ko e kau vale mo e kui: he ʻoku lahi ʻae fē, ʻae meʻa foaki, pe ko e ʻesifeilaulau ʻoku ne fakatapui ʻae meʻa foaki?
Ye blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Pea ko ia ʻoku ne fuakava ʻaki ʻae ʻesifeilaulau, ʻoku fuakava ki ai ia, pea mo e meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku ʻi ai.
He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 Pea ko ia ʻoku fuakava ʻaki ʻae falelotu lahi, ʻoku ne fuakava ki ai, pea mo ia ʻoku nofo ʻi ai.
And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 Pea ko ia te ne fuakava ʻaki ʻae langi, ʻoku fuakava ki he ʻafioʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua, pea mo ia ʻoku nofo ʻi ai.
And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! Koeʻuhi ʻoku mou tukuhau ʻi he mini, mo e ʻaneto, mo e kumino, ka ʻoku mou taʻetokanga ki he ngaahi meʻa mamafa ʻoe fono, ko e fai totonu, mo e loto ʻofa, mo e tui: naʻe totonu hoʻomou fai eni, kaeʻoua naʻa liʻaki ʻena.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, judgment, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone.
24 Ko e kau takimuʻa kui, ʻoku mou heuʻi ʻae lango, kae folo ʻae kāmeli.
Ye blind guides, which strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel.
25 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! He ʻoku mou fakamaʻa ʻae tuʻa ipu inu mo e ipu kai, ka ʻoku fonu ʻi loto ʻi he fakamālohi mo e holi kovi.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess.
26 ‌ʻAe Fālesi kui, tomuʻa fakamaʻa ʻae loto ipu inu mo e ipu kai, koeʻuhi ke maʻa ai foki ʻae tuʻa[ipu].
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.
27 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! He ʻoku mou tatau mo e fonualoto kuo vali hinehina, ʻaia ʻoku matamatalelei moʻoni ʻituʻa, ka ʻoku fonu ʻi loto ʻi he ngaahi hui ʻoe kakai mate, mo e meʻa fakalielia kotoa pē.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 ‌ʻOku pehē pe ʻakimoutolu foki, ʻoku mou ha māʻoniʻoni ʻituʻa ki he kakai, ka ʻoku mou fonu ʻi loto ʻi he mālualoi mo e angahia.
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 “ʻE malaʻia ʻakimoutolu, ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi, ko e mālualoi! He ʻoku mou ngaohi ʻae tanuʻanga ʻoe kau palōfita, ʻo fakasanisani ʻae fonualoto ʻoe kakai māʻoniʻoni,
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous,
30 ‌ʻo mou pehē, ‘Ka ne mau moʻui ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻemau ngaahi tamai, pehē, ʻe ʻikai te mau kau mo kinautolu ʻi he toto ʻoe kau palōfita.’
and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 “Ko ia ko e kau fakamoʻoni ʻakimoutolu kiate kimoutolu, ko e fānau ʻakimoutolu ʻanautolu naʻe tāmateʻi ʻae kau palōfita.
Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets.
32 Ko ia mou fakafonu ʻae ipu fuofua ʻa hoʻomou ngaahi tamai.
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 ‌ʻAe fanga ngata, ʻae fānau ʻae ngata fekai! Te mou hao fēfeeʻi mei he malaʻia ʻo heli? (Geenna g1067)
Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell? (Geenna g1067)
34 Ko ia, vakai, ʻoku ou fekau atu kiate kimoutolu ʻae kau palōfita, mo e kau tangata poto, mo e kau tangata tohi: pea ko honau niʻihi te mou tāmateʻi ʻo tutuki ki he ʻakau: pea ko honau niʻihi te mou haha ʻi homou ngaahi falelotu, ʻo fakatangaʻi mei he kolo ki he kolo:
Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:
35 Koeʻuhi ʻe ʻeke ʻiate kimoutolu ʻae toto māʻoniʻoni kotoa pē kuo lilingi ʻi māmani mei he toto ʻo ʻEpeli māʻoniʻoni, ʻo hoko ki he toto ʻo Sakalaia ko e foha ʻo Palakia, ʻaia naʻa mou tāmateʻi ʻi he vahaʻa ʻoe potu toputapu mo e ʻesifeilaulau.
that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.
36 Ko ʻeku tala moʻoni atu kiate kimoutolu, ʻE hoko ʻae ngaahi meʻa ni kotoa pē ki he toʻutangata ni.
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 “ʻE Selūsalema, Selūsalema, ʻa Koe ʻoku ke tāmateʻi ʻae kau palōfita, mo ke tolongaki ʻaki ʻae maka ʻakinautolu ʻoku fekau atu kiate koe, kuo liunga fiha ʻeku fie tānaki fakataha hoʻo fānau, ʻo hangē ko e tānaki fakataha ʻe he motuʻa moa ʻene fānau ʻi hono lalo kapakau, ka naʻe ʻikai te mou loto[ki ai!]
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Vakai, kuo siʻaki homou fale kiate kimoutolu ke lala ʻaupito.
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 He ʻoku ou tala atu kiate kimoutolu, Ngata mei heni, ʻe ʻikai te mou mamata kiate au, kaeʻoua ke mou pehē, ‘ʻOku monūʻia ia ʻoku haʻu ʻi he huafa ʻoe ʻEiki.’”
For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
