1 Pea toki haʻu ʻae kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi ʻo Selūsalema, kia Sisu, ʻonau pehē,
Then came to Jesus Pharisees and Scribes that were from Jerusalem, and said:
2 “Ko e hā ʻoku liʻaki ai ʻe hoʻo kau ākonga ʻae talatupuʻa ʻae kau mātuʻa? He ʻoku ʻikai te nau fanofano honau nima ʻoka nau ka kai mā.”
Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders, and wash not their hands when they eat bread?
3 Ka naʻe lea ia, ʻo pehēange kiate kinautolu, “Ko e hā ʻoku mou liʻaki ai foki ʻae fekau ʻae ʻOtua ʻi hoʻomou talatupuʻa?
Jesus replied and said to them: Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God, on account of your tradition?
4 He kuo fekau ʻe he ʻOtua, ʻo pehē, ‘Fakaʻapaʻapa ki hoʻo tamai mo [hoʻo ]faʻē:’ pea, ‘Ko ia ʻe kapeʻi [ʻene ]tamai pe ko [ʻene ]faʻē, tuku ke mate tāmateʻi ia.’
For God hath said: Honor thy father, and thy mother; and he that revileth his father or his mother, shall be put to death.
5 Ka ʻoku pehē ʻekimoutolu, ‘Ko ia ʻe pehē ki heʻene tamai pe ko ʻene faʻē, “Kuo fakatapui ʻaia kotoa pē ʻoku ou faʻa ʻaonga ai kiate koe,”
But ye say: Whosoever shall say to a father or to a mother, Be that my offering, by which ye get profit from me: then he must not honor his father or his mother.
6 pea ʻoku ʻikai toe fakaʻapaʻapa ia ki heʻene tamai pe ko ʻene faʻē, [ʻe ʻataʻatā ia].’ Ko ia ʻoku mou fakataʻeʻaongaʻi ʻae fekau ʻae ʻOtua ʻaki hoʻomou talatupuʻa.
And thus ye make void the word of God, for the sake of your tradition.
7 ʻAe kau mālualoi! Neʻineʻi lea ʻa ʻIsaia kiate kimoutolu, ʻo pehē,
Ye hypocrites, well did the prophet Isaiah prophesy of you, and say:
8 ‘ʻOku ʻunuʻunu mai ʻae kakai ni kiate au ʻaki honau ngutu, ʻo fakaʻapaʻapa kiate au ʻaki honau loungutu; ka ʻoku mamaʻo honau loto ʻiate au.
This people honoreth me with the lips, but their heart is far from me.
9 Ka ʻoku taʻeʻaonga ʻenau hū kiate au, ʻo akonaki ʻaki ʻae ngaahi fekau ʻae tangata pe.’”
And in vain they pay me homage, while they teach doctrines that are the precepts of men.
10 Pea ui ia ki he kakai, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “Fanongo, pea tokanga:
And he called the multitudes, and said to them, Hear and understand.
11 ʻOku ʻikai fakaʻuli ki he tangata ʻaia ʻoku ʻalu ki he ngutu; ka ko ia ʻoku haʻu mei he ngutu, ʻoku ne fakaʻuliʻi ʻae tangata.”
Not that which entereth the mouth, defileth a man; but that which proceedeth from the mouth, that defileth a man.
12 Pea toki haʻu ai ʻene kau ākonga, ʻonau pehē kiate ia, “ʻOku ke ʻilo naʻe tūkia ʻae kau Fālesi, ʻi heʻenau fanongo ki he lea ko ia?”
Then came his disciples, and said to him: Knowest thou, that the Pharisees were offended when they heard that speech?
13 Ka naʻe lea ia, ʻo pehēange, “Ko e ʻakau kotoa pē naʻe ʻikai tō ʻe heʻeku Tamai ʻoku ʻi he langi, ʻe taʻaki fuʻu hake ia.
And he replied, and said to them: Every plant, which my Father who is in heaven hath not planted, shall be eradicated.
14 Tuku ai pe ʻakinautolu: ko e kau takimuʻa kui ʻoe kui ʻakinautolu. Pea kapau ʻoku tataki ʻae kui ʻe he kui, ʻe tō fakatouʻosi pe ki he luo.”
Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. And if a blind man leadeth one blind, they will both fall into the ditch.
15 Pea lea ʻa Pita, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “Fakamatala kiate kimautolu ʻae fakatātā ni.”
And Simon Cephas answered and said to him: My Lord, explain to us this similitude.
16 Pea pehēange ʻe Sisu, “ʻOku mou kei taʻeʻilo foki?
And he said to them: Are ye also, up to this time, without understanding?
17 ʻOku teʻeki ai te mou ʻilo, ko e meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku ʻalu ʻi he ngutu, ʻoku ʻalu ia ki he kete, pea toki ʻalu hifo kituʻa?
Know ye not, that whatever entereth the mouth, passeth into the belly, and from there is ejected by purgation?
18 Ka ko e ngaahi meʻa ko ia ʻoku ʻalu atu ʻi he ngutu, ʻoku haʻu mei he loto: pea ko ia ia ʻoku fakaʻuliʻi ʻae tangata.
But that which proceedeth from the mouth, cometh from the heart: and that is what defileth a man.
19 He ʻoku haʻu mei he loto ʻae mahalo kovi, mo e fakapō, mo e tono fefine, mo e feʻauaki, mo e kaihaʻa, mo e fakamoʻoni loi, mo e lea kovi:
For, from the heart proceed evil thoughts, adultery, murder, whoredom, theft, false testimony, reviling.
20 Ko eni ʻae ngaahi meʻa ʻoku fakaʻuliʻi ʻae tangata: ka ko e kai taʻefanofano nima, ʻoku ʻikai fakaʻuliʻi ia ʻae tangata.”
These are the things that defile a man. But if a man eat while his hands are unwashed, he is not defiled.
21 Pea toki ʻalu mei ai ʻa Sisu, ki he ngaahi potu ʻo Taia mo Saitone.
And Jesus departed from there, and went to the confines of Tyre and Sidon.
22 Pea vakai, naʻe haʻu ʻae fefine Kēnani mei he potu ko ia, ʻo tangi kiate ia, ʻo pehē, “ʻAloʻofa mai kiate au, ʻe ʻEiki, ko e foha ʻo Tevita; ko ʻeku taʻahine ʻoku mamahi lahi ʻi he tēvolo.”
And lo, a woman, a Canaanitess from those confines, came forth, calling out and saying: Compassionate me, my Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grievously distressed by a demon.
23 Ka naʻe ʻikai siʻi te ne lea kiate ia. Pea haʻu ʻene kau ākonga, ʻo kole kiate ia, ʻo pehē, “Fekau ia ke ʻalu; he ʻoku ne tangi toupili mai kiate kitautolu.”
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and requested of him, and said: Send her away, for she crieth after us.
24 Ka naʻe lea ia, ʻo pehēange, “ʻOku ʻikai fekau au ka ki he fanga sipi he ʻoe fale ʻo ʻIsileli.”
But he answered and said to them: I am not sent, except to the sheep that have strayed from the house of Israel.
25 Pea toki haʻu ia, ʻo hū kiate ia, ʻo pehē, “ʻEiki, tokoniʻi au.”
And she came, and worshipped him, and said: Help me, my Lord.
26 Ka naʻe lea ia, ʻo pehēange, “ʻOku ʻikai lelei ke toʻo ʻae mā ʻae fānau, pea lī ki he fanga kulī.”
Jesus said to her: It is not proper, to take the bread of the children and throw it to the dogs.
27 Pea pehē ʻe ia, “Ko e moʻoni, ʻEiki: ka ʻoku kai ʻe he fanga kulī ʻae momoʻi [meʻakai ]ʻoku ngangana mei he keinangaʻanga ʻa honau ʻeiki.”
And she said: Even so, my Lord; yet the dogs eat of the fragments that fall from the tables of their masters, and live.
28 Pea toki lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “ʻE fefine, ʻoku lahi hoʻo tui: ke hoko kiate koe ʻo hangē ko ho loto.” Pea moʻui ʻene taʻahine ʻi he feituʻulaʻā ko ia.
Then Jesus said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it to thee, as thou desirest. And her daughter was cured from that hour.
29 Pea ʻalu mei ai ʻa Sisu, pea haʻu ia, ʻo ofi ki he tahi ʻo Kaleli; pea ʻalu hake ia ki he moʻunga, ʻo nofo ai.
And Jesus departed from there, and came to the side of the sea of Galilee: and he ascended a mountain, and sat there.
30 Pea haʻu ʻae kakai tokolahi kiate ia, pea nau ʻomi ʻae pipiki, mo e kui, mo e noa, mo e lavea, mo e tokolahi kehe, ʻo tuku ʻakinautolu ki he vaʻe ʻo Sisu; pea fakamoʻui ʻe ia ʻakinautolu:
And great multitudes came to him; and with them were the lame, and the blind, and the dumb, and the maimed, and many others: and they laid them at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them.
31 Ko ia naʻe ofo lahi ai ʻae kakai, ʻi heʻenau mamata kuo fakalea ʻae noa, pea fakahaohaoa ʻae lavea, pea fakaʻeveʻeva ʻae pipiki, pea fakaʻā ʻae kui: pea nau fakamālō ki he ʻOtua ʻo ʻIsileli.
So that the multitudes were amazed, when they saw the dumb speaking, and the maimed made whole, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they praised the God of Israel.
32 Pea ui ʻa Sisu ke ʻalu ange ʻene kau ākonga kiate ia, ʻo ne pehē, “ʻOku ou ʻofa mamahi ki he kakai, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻaho tolu ʻenau ʻiate au, pea ʻoku ʻikai haʻanau meʻa ke kai: pea ʻe ʻikai te u faʻa fekau ke nau ʻalu ʻaukai pe, telia naʻa nau pongia ʻi he hala.”
Then Jesus called his disciples, and said to them: I pity this multitude; for lo, these three days they have continued with me, and they have nothing to eat: and I am unwilling to send them away fasting, lest they faint by the way.
33 Pea lea ʻene kau ākonga kiate ia, “Te tau maʻu mei fē ʻi he toafa ni ʻae mā lahi, ke fakamākona ʻaki ʻae fuʻu kakai pehē ni?”
His disciples say to him: Whence can we get bread in the wilderness, to satisfy all this multitude?
34 Pea pehēange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku fiha hoʻomou foʻi mā?” Pea nau pehē, “ʻOku fitu, mo e fanga kihiʻi ika.”
Jesus said to them, How many loaves have ye? They said to him, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35 Pea fekau ʻe ia ki he kakai ke nofo ki he kelekele.
And he commanded the multitudes to recline on the ground.
36 Pea toʻo ʻe ia ʻae foʻi mā ʻe fitu mo e ngaahi ika, pea fai ʻae fakafetaʻi, pea tofitofi ia, ʻo ʻoatu ki heʻene kau ākonga, pea [tufaki ]ʻe he kau ākonga ki he kakai.
And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
37 Pea naʻa nau kai kotoa pē, pea mākona ai: pea nau tānaki ʻae toenga kai pea fonu ai ʻae kato ʻe fitu.
And they all ate, and were satisfied. And they took up the remains of fragments, seven full baskets.
38 Pea ko kinautolu naʻe kai, ko e tangata ʻe toko fā afe, kaeʻumaʻā ʻae kau fefine mo e tamaiki.
And they that had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39 Pea fekau ʻe ia ʻae kakai ke nau ʻalu, pea heka vaka ia ʻo folau ki he potu ʻo Makitala.
And when he had sent away the multitudes, he took ship, and came to the coasts of Magdala.
