< Maʻake 8 >
1 ʻI he ngaahi ʻaho ko ia naʻe fuʻu tokolahi ʻaupito ʻae kakai, pea naʻe ʻikai haʻanau meʻa ke kai, pea ui ʻe Sisu ʻa ʻene kau ākonga, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu,
In those days, there being again a great crowd, and they having nothing that they could eat, having called his disciples to [him], he says to them,
2 “ʻOku ou ʻofa mamahi ki he kakai, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻaho tolu ʻenau ʻiate au, pea ʻoku ʻikai haʻanau meʻa ke kai:
I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat,
3 Pea kapau te u fekau kenau ʻalu fiekaia ki honau ngaahi fale, te nau pongia ʻi he hala: he ko honau niʻihi kuo haʻu mei he mamaʻo.”
and if I should dismiss them to their home fasting, they will faint on the way; for some of them are come from far.
4 Pea pehēange ʻene kau ākonga kiate ia, “ʻE maʻu mei fē ʻe ha taha ʻae mā ke fakamākona ʻaki ʻakinautolu ni ʻi heni ʻi he toafa?”
And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to satisfy these with bread here in a desert place?
5 Pea fehuʻi ia kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku fiha hoʻomou foʻi mā?” Pea nau pehē, “ʻOku fitu.”
And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
6 Pea fekau ʻe ia ki he kakai ke nau nofo ki lalo ki he kelekele; pea ne toʻo ʻae foʻi mā ʻe fitu, ʻo ne fakafetaʻi, mo tofitofi, pea ʻange ki heʻene kau ākonga ke tufaki; pea naʻa nau tufaki [ia ]ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kakai.
And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, he gave thanks, and broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, that they might set [them] before [them]; and they set [them] before the crowd.
7 Pea naʻa nau maʻu mo e ngaahi ika iiki: pea ne ne tāpuaki, mo fekau ke tufaki foki ia.
And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed them, he desired these also to be set before [them].
8 Pea naʻa nau kai, ʻo mākona: pea nau tānaki ʻae toenga kai ko e kato ʻe fitu.
And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up of fragments that remained seven baskets.
9 Pea ko kinautolu naʻe kai, ko e toko fā afe nai: pea naʻe fekau ʻe ia ke nau ʻalu.
And they [that had eaten] were about four thousand; and he sent them away.
10 Pea heka vaka leva ia mo ʻene kau ākonga, ʻo haʻu ki he potu ʻo Talamanutā.
And immediately going on board ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
11 Pea ʻalu ange ʻae kau Fālesi, ʻo kamata fakafehuʻi kiate ia, mo kumi ʻiate ia ha fakaʻilonga mei he langi, ko hono ʻahiʻahiʻi.
And the Pharisees went out and began to dispute against him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
12 Pea mafulu lahi ia ʻi hono laumālie, mo pehē, “Ko e hā ʻoku kumi ai ʻe he toʻutangata ni ha fakaʻilonga? Ko e moʻoni ʻoku ou tala atu kiate kimoutolu, ʻE ʻikai tuku ha fakaʻilonga ki he toʻutangata ni.”
And groaning in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, A sign shall in no wise be given to this generation.
13 Pea ʻalu ia ʻiate kinautolu, ʻo toe heka vaka, mo ʻalu ki he kauvai ʻe taha.
And he left them, and going again on board ship, went away to the other side.
14 Pea kuo ngalo[ʻi he kau ākonga ]ke ʻave ha mā, pea ko e foʻi mā pe taha naʻe ʻi he vaka mo kinautolu.
And they forgot to take bread, and save one loaf, they had not [any] with them in the ship.
15 Pea naʻa ne naʻinaʻi kiate kinautolu, ʻo pehē, “Tokanga, pea vakai telia ʻae meʻa fakatupu ʻae kau Fālesi, pea mo e meʻa fakatupu ʻa Helota.”
And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and [of] the leaven of Herod.
16 Pea fealēleaʻaki ai ʻakinautolu, ʻo pehē, “Ko e meʻa ʻi heʻetau taʻeʻomi ha mā.”
And they reasoned with one another, [saying], It is because we have no bread.
17 Pea kuo ʻilo ia ʻe Sisu, pea pehē ʻe [ia ]kiate kinautolu, “Ko e hā ʻoku mou alea ai, ʻi he ʻikai haʻamou mā? ʻOku teʻeki ai te mou mamata, pe ʻilo? ʻOku kei fefeka homou loto?
And Jesus knowing [it], says to them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive nor understand? Have ye your heart [yet] hardened?
18 ʻOku mou mata, kae ʻikai te mou mamata? Pea telinga, kae ʻikai ongoʻi? Pea ʻoku ʻikai te mou manatu?
Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
19 ʻI heʻeku tofitofi ʻae foʻi mā ʻe nima ki he toko nima afe, naʻe fiha ʻae kato naʻe pito ʻi he toenga ne mou ʻave?” Pea nau pehē kiate ia, “E hongofulu ma ua.”
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve.
20 “Pea ko e fitu ki he toko fā afe, naʻe fiha ʻae kato naʻe pito ʻi he toenga ne mou ʻave?” Pea nau pehē, “ʻE fitu.”
And when the seven for the four thousand, the filling of how many baskets of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
21 Pea pehē ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “Ko e hā nai ʻoku ʻikai ai te mou ʻilo?”
And he said to them, How do ye not yet understand?
22 Pea haʻu ia ki Petesaita: pea naʻa nau ʻomi kiate ia ʻae tangata kui, ʻonau kole kiate ia ke ne ala ki ai.
And he comes to Bethsaida; and they bring him a blind man, and beseech him that he might touch him.
23 Pea puke ʻe ia ʻae nima ʻoe tangata kui, ʻo tataki ia kituʻa mei he potu kakai; pea kuo ne ʻaʻanu ki hono mata, mo ʻai hono nima kiate ia, pea ne fehuʻi kiate ia, pe ʻoku ne mamata ki ha meʻa.
And taking hold of the hand of the blind man he led him forth out of the village, and having spit upon his eyes, he laid his hands upon him, and asked him if he beheld anything.
24 Pea hanga hake ia, ʻo ne pehē, “ʻOku ou mamata ki he kakai ʻoku hangē ko e ngaahi ʻakau, ʻoku ʻeveʻeva.”
And having looked up, he said, I behold men, for I see [them], as trees, walking.
25 Pea hili ia, pea ne toe ʻai hono nima ki hono mata, pea fekau kiate ia ke ne hanga hake: pea naʻe moʻui ia, ʻo ne mamata totonu ki he kakai kotoa pē.
Then he laid his hands again upon his eyes, and he saw distinctly, and was restored and saw all things clearly.
26 Pea ne fekau ia ki hono fale, mo ne pehē, “ʻOua naʻa ke ʻalu ki he potu kakai, pe tala [ia ]ki ha taha ʻi he potu kakai.”
And he sent him to his house, saying, Neither enter into the village, nor tell [it] to any one in the village.
27 Pea ʻalu atu ʻa Sisu, mo ʻene kau ākonga, ki he ngaahi potu kakai ʻo Sesalia ʻi Filipai: pea fehuʻi ʻe ia ki heʻene kau ākonga ʻi he hala, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku pehē ʻe he kakai pe ko hai au?”
And Jesus went forth and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea-Philippi. And by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am?
28 Pea nau pehēange, “Ko Sione ko e Papitaiso: kae[pehē ]ʻe he niʻihi, ko ʻIlaisiā; pea [pehē ]ʻe he niʻihi, ko e taha ʻoe kau palōfita.”
And they answered him, saying, John the baptist; and others, Elias; but others, One of the prophets.
29 Pea pehē ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “Ka ʻoku pehē ʻekimoutolu ko hai au?” Pea lea ʻa Pita, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “Ko koe, ko e Kalaisi.”
And he asked them, But ye, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering says to him, Thou art the Christ.
30 Pea fekau ʻe ia kiate kinautolu ke ʻoua naʻa nau fakahā ia ki ha taha.
And he charged them straitly, in order that they should tell no man about him.
31 Pea kamata fakahā ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “ʻAe kātaki ʻe he Foha ʻoe tangata ʻae ngaahi meʻa lahi, pea siʻaki ia ʻe he mātuʻa, mo e kau taulaʻeiki lahi, mo e kau tangata tohi, pea ʻe tāmateʻi ia, pea hili ʻae ʻaho ʻe tolu ʻe toe tuʻu.”
And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and of the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise [again].
32 Pea naʻa ne lea ʻilongofua ʻaki ʻae lea ko ia. Pea ʻave ia ʻe Pita, ʻo ne kamata valokiʻi ia.
And he spoke the thing openly. And Peter, taking him to [him], began to rebuke him.
33 Ka kuo tafoki ia ki mui, ʻo vakai ki heʻene kau ākonga, pea valokiʻi ʻe ia ʻa Pita, ʻo pehē, “ʻAlu ki hoku tuʻa, Sētane: he ʻoku ʻikai te ke leleiʻia ʻi he ngaahi meʻa ʻae ʻOtua, ka ʻi he ngaahi meʻa ʻae tangata.”
But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men.
34 Pea kuo ui ʻe ia ʻae kakai mo ʻene kau ākonga foki, pea ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “Ko ia ia ʻoku loto ke muimui ʻiate au, ke ne siʻaki ʻe ia ia, kae toʻo ʻene kavenga, ʻo muimui ʻiate au.
And having called the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.
35 He ko ia ia ʻoku loto ke kalofaki ʻene moʻui, ʻe mole ia: ka ko ia ia ʻe mole ʻene moʻui koeʻuhi ko au mo e ongoongolelei, ʻe maʻu ʻe ia ia.
For whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it.
36 He ko e hā hono ʻaonga ki ha tangata, ʻo kapau ʻe maʻu ʻe ia ʻa māmani kotoa pē, kae mole hono laumālie ʻoʻona?
For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?
37 Pe ko e hā ʻe foaki ʻe ha tangata ke fetongi ʻaki hono laumālie?
for what should a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Ko ia ia ʻe mā kiate au, mo ʻeku ngaahi lea, ʻi he toʻutangata feʻauaki mo angahala ni, ʻe ma foki ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata ʻiate ia, ʻoka haʻu ia ʻi he nāunau ʻo ʻene Tamai, mo e kau ʻāngelo māʻoniʻoni.”
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man also be ashamed when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
