< Maʻake 10 >

1 Pea naʻe mahuʻi mei ai ia, ʻo haʻu ki he mata fonua ʻo Siutea, ʻi he kauvai ʻe taha ʻo Sioatani: pea toe fakataha ʻae kakai kiate ia; pea ne toe akonakiʻi ʻakinautolu, ʻo hangē ko ʻene faʻa fai.
And having risen thence, he doth come to the coasts of Judea, through the other side of the Jordan, and again do multitudes come together unto him, and, as he had been accustomed, again he was teaching them.
2 Pea haʻu ʻae kau Fālesi, ʻonau fehuʻi ʻahiʻahi kiate ia, “ʻOku ngofua ke tukuange ʻe he tangata [ʻa hono ]uaifi?”
And the Pharisees, having come near, questioned him, if it is lawful for a husband to put away a wife, tempting him,
3 Pea lea ia, ʻo pehēange kiate kinautolu, “Ko e hā naʻe fekau ʻe Mōsese kiate kimoutolu?”
and he answering said to them, 'What did Moses command you?'
4 Pea nau pehē, “Naʻe tuku ʻe Mōsese ke tohi ʻae tohi fakamavae, pea tukuange [ia].”
and they said, 'Moses suffered to write a bill of divorce, and to put away.'
5 Pea lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange kiate kinautolu, “Ko e meʻa ʻi he fefeka ʻo homou loto naʻa ne tohi ai ʻae fekau ni kiate kimoutolu.
And Jesus answering said to them, 'For the stiffness of your heart he wrote you this command,
6 Kae talu mei he kamataʻanga ʻi he fakatupu naʻe ngaohi ʻakinaua ʻe he ʻOtua ‘ko e tangata mo e fefine.’
but from the beginning of the creation, a male and a female God did make them;
7 ‘Pea ko e meʻa ko ia ʻe tukuange ai ʻe he tangata ʻa ʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē, kae pikitai ki hono uaifi;
on this account shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife,
8 pea ʻe hoko ʻakinaua ko e kakano pe taha:’ ko ia ʻoku ʻikai ai ke na kei ua ka ko e kakano pe taha.
and they shall be — the two — for one flesh; so that they are no more two, but one flesh;
9 Ko ia foki kuo fakataha ʻe he ʻOtua, ke ʻoua naʻa fakamavae ʻe ha tangata.”
what therefore God did join together, let not man put asunder.'
10 Pea toe ʻeke ʻe heʻene kau ākonga kiate ia ʻi he fale ki he meʻa ko ia.
And in the house again his disciples of the same thing questioned him,
11 Pea pehē ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “Ko ia ia ʻe tukuange hono uaifi, pea fakamaʻu mo ha taha kehe, ʻoku tono fefine ia kiate ia.
and he saith to them, 'Whoever may put away his wife, and may marry another, doth commit adultery against her;
12 Pea kapau ʻe tukuange ʻe he fefine ʻa hono husepāniti, pea fakamaʻu mo ha taha kehe, ʻoku tono tangata ia.”
and if a woman may put away her husband, and is married to another, she committeth adultery.'
13 Pea naʻa nau ʻomi ʻae tamaiki iiki kiate ia, koeʻuhi ke ne ala kiate kinautolu: pea lolomi ʻe he kau ākonga [ʻakinautolu ]naʻe ʻomi ʻakinautolu.
And they were bringing to him children, that he might touch them, and the disciples were rebuking those bringing them,
14 Ka ʻi he ʻafio ki ai ʻa Sisu, pea tuputāmaki lahi ia, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “Tuku ke haʻu kiate au ʻae tamaiki iiki, pea ʻoua naʻa taʻofi ʻakinautolu; he ʻoku ʻoe kakai pehē ʻae puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua.
and Jesus having seen, was much displeased, and he said to them, 'Suffer the children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the reign of God;
15 Ko e moʻoni ʻoku ou tala atu kiate kimoutolu, Ko ia ia ʻe ʻikai te ne maʻu ʻae puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua ʻo hangē ko ha tamasiʻi siʻi, ʻe ʻikai hū ia ki ai.”
verily I say to you, whoever may not receive the reign of God, as a child — he may not enter into it;'
16 Pea fua hake ʻe ia ʻakinautolu ʻi hono nima, ʻo hilifaki hono nima kiate kinautolu, mo ne tāpuakiʻi ʻakinautolu.
and having taken them in his arms, having put [his] hands upon them, he was blessing them.
17 Pea ʻi heʻene hāʻele atu ki he hala, naʻe lele mai ʻae tokotaha, ʻo tūʻulutui kiate ia, mo fehuʻi kiate ia, [ʻo pehē], “ʻEiki lelei, ko e hā teu fai ke u maʻu ai ʻae moʻui taʻengata?” (aiōnios g166)
And as he is going forth into the way, one having run and having kneeled to him, was questioning him, 'Good teacher, what may I do, that life age-during I may inherit?' (aiōnios g166)
18 Pea pehē ʻe Sisu kiate ia, “Ko e hā ʻoku ke ui ai au ko e lelei? Ko e tokotaha pe ʻoku lelei, ʻaia ko e ʻOtua.
And Jesus said to him, 'Why me dost thou call good? no one [is] good except One — God;
19 ‌ʻOku ke ʻilo ʻae ngaahi fekau, ‘ʻOua naʻa ke tono fefine, ʻOua naʻa ke fakapō, ʻOua naʻa ke kaihaʻa, ʻOua naʻa ke fakamoʻoni loi, ʻOua naʻa ke kākā, Fakaʻapaʻapa ki hoʻo tamai mo hoʻo faʻē.’”
the commands thou hast known: Thou mayest not commit adultery, Thou mayest do no murder, Thou mayest not steal, Thou mayest not bear false witness, Thou mayest not defraud, Honour thy father and mother.'
20 Pea ne lea, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “ʻEiki, kuo u fai eni kotoa pē talu ʻeku kei siʻi.”
And he answering said to him, 'Teacher, all these did I keep from my youth.'
21 Pea sio ki ai ʻa Sisu mo ʻofa kiate ia, mo ne pehē kiate ia, “Ko e meʻa ʻe taha ʻoku ke kei hala ai: ke ke ʻalu, ʻo fakatau ʻaia kotoa pē ʻoku ʻaʻau, pea ke foaki ki he masiva, pea te ke maʻu ʻae koloa ʻi he langi: pea ke haʻu, ʻo fua ʻae ʻakau māfasia, mo muimui ʻiate au.”
And Jesus having looked upon him, did love him, and said to him, 'One thing thou dost lack; go away, whatever thou hast — sell, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, be following me, having taken up the cross.'
22 Pea naʻe puputuʻu ia ʻi he lea ko ia, pea ʻalu atu kuo mamahi; he naʻe lahi ʻene koloa.
And he — gloomy at the word — went away sorrowing, for he was having many possessions.
23 Pea vakai foli ʻe Sisu, pea ne pehē ki heʻene kau ākonga, “Ko e meʻa faingataʻa ʻaupito kiate kinautolu ʻoku maʻu koloa ke hū ki he puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua!”
And Jesus having looked round, saith to his disciples, 'How hardly shall they who have riches enter into the reign of God!'
24 Pea ofo ʻae kau ākonga ʻi heʻene ngaahi lea. Ka naʻe toe lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange kiate kinautolu, “Fānau ʻe faingataʻa ʻaupito kiate kinautolu ʻoku falala ki he koloa ke hū ki he puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua!
And the disciples were astonished at his words, and Jesus again answering saith to them, 'Children, how hard is it to those trusting on the riches to enter into the reign of God!
25 ‌ʻOku faingofua ke hū ʻae kāmeli ʻi he avaʻi hui, ʻi he hū ʻae tangata koloaʻia ki he puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua.”
It is easier for a camel through the eye of the needle to enter, than for a rich man to enter into the reign of God.'
26 Pea naʻa nau mātuʻaki ofo fakamanavahē, ʻonau fepehēʻaki, “Pea ko hai ʻe moʻui?”
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying unto themselves, 'And who is able to be saved?'
27 Pea vakai ʻa Sisu kiate kinautolu, ʻo ne pehē, “ʻOku ʻikai faʻa fai [eni ]ʻe he tangata, ka ko e ʻOtua pe: he ʻoku faʻa fai ʻe he ʻOtua ʻae meʻa kotoa pē.”
And Jesus, having looked upon them, saith, 'With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.'
28 Pea toki pehē ʻe Pita kiate ia, “Vakai, kuo mau liʻaki ʻae meʻa kotoa pē, ʻo muimui ʻiate koe.”
And Peter began to say to him, 'Lo, we left all, and we followed thee.'
29 Pea lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange, “Ko e moʻoni ʻoku ou tala atu kiate kimoutolu, ʻOku ʻikai ha tangata kuo ne liʻaki ʻae fale, pe ko e ngaahi kāinga, pe ha ngaahi tuofefine, pe ko e tamai, pe ko e faʻē, pe ha uaifi, pe ha fānau, pe ko e fonua, koeʻuhi ko au, pea mo e ongoongolelei,
And Jesus answering said, 'Verily I say to you, there is no one who left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for my sake, and for the good news',
30 Ka te ne maʻu ʻo taki teau ʻi he moʻui ni, ko e fale, mo e kāinga, mo e tuofefine, mo e faʻē, mo e fānau, mo e fonua, fakataha mo e fakatanga; pea ʻi he maama ʻe haʻu ko e moʻui taʻengata. (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
who may not receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and fields, with persecutions, and in the age that is coming, life age-during; (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
31 Ka ko e tokolahi ʻoku muʻomuʻa ʻe muimui; pea ʻe muʻomuʻa ʻae muimui.”
and many first shall be last, and the last first.'
32 Pea kuo nau fononga ʻi he hala ki Selūsalema; pea muʻomuʻa atu ʻa Sisu ʻiate kinautolu: pea ofo ai ʻakinautolu; pea nau manavahē ʻi heʻenau muimui. Pea ne toe ʻave ʻae toko hongofulu ma toko ua, ʻo ne kamata tala kiate kinautolu ʻae ngaahi meʻa ʻe hoko kiate ia,
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them, and they were amazed, and following they were afraid. And having again taken the twelve, he began to tell them the things about to happen to him,
33 [ʻO ne pehē], “Vakai, ʻoku tau ʻalu hake ki Selūsalema; pea ʻe tukuange ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata ki he kau taulaʻeiki lahi, mo e kau tangata tohi; pea te nau fakamaau ia ke mate, ʻo tukuange ia ki he Senitaile;
— 'Lo, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be delivered to the chief priests, and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the nations,
34 Pea te nau manukiʻi ia, mo haha ia, mo ʻaʻanu kiate ia, mo tāmateʻi ia; pea ʻi hono ʻaho tolu ʻe toetuʻu ia.”
and they shall mock him, and scourge him, and spit on him, and kill him, and the third day he shall rise again.'
35 Pea haʻu kiate ia ʻa Semisi mo Sione, ko e ongo foha ʻo Sepeti, ʻo na pehē, “ʻEiki, ko homa loto ke ke fai maʻamaua ʻaia kotoa pē te ma kole ki ai.”
And there come near to him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying, 'Teacher, we wish that whatever we may ask for ourselves, thou mayest do for us;'
36 Pea pehēange ʻe ia kiate kinaua, “Ko e hā homo loto ke u fai maʻamoua?”
and he said to them, 'What do ye wish me to do for you?'
37 Pea na pehē kiate ia, Tuku kiate kimaua ke ma nofo, ko e tokotaha ʻi ho nima toʻomataʻu, pea tokotaha ʻi ho nima toʻohema, ʻi ho nāunau.”
and they said to him, 'Grant to us that, one on thy right hand and one on thy left, we may sit in thy glory;'
38 Ka naʻe pehē ʻe Sisu kiate kinaua, “ʻOku ʻikai temo ʻilo ʻaia ʻoku mo kole: ʻoku mo faʻa fai ke inu ʻi he ipu ʻaia te u inu ai? Pea ke papitaiso ʻi he papitaiso ko ia te u papitaiso ai?”
and Jesus said to them, 'Ye have not known what ye ask; are ye able to drink of the cup that I drink of, and with the baptism that I am baptized with — to be baptized?'
39 Pea na pehēange kiate ia, “ʻOku ma faʻa fai pe.” Pea pehē ʻe Sisu kiate kinaua, “ʻE inu moʻoni ʻekimoua ʻi he ipu te u inu ai; pea temo papitaiso ʻi he papitaiso ko ia ʻe papitaiso ʻaki au:
And they said to him, 'We are able;' and Jesus said to them, 'Of the cup indeed that I drink of, ye shall drink, and with the baptism that I am baptized with, ye shall be baptized;
40 Ka ko e nofo ki hoku nima toʻomataʻu mo hoku nima toʻohema, ʻoku ʻikai ʻaʻaku ia ke foaki, ka kiate kinautolu kuo teuteu ia ki ai.”
but to sit on my right and on my left, is not mine to give, but — to those for whom it hath been prepared.'
41 Pea kuo fanongo ai ʻae toko hongofulu, naʻa nau toki ʻita lahi kia Semisi mo Sione.
And the ten having heard, began to be much displeased at James and John,
42 Ka naʻe ui ʻakinautolu ʻe Sisu, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku mou ʻilo ko kinautolu kuo fakanofo ko e ʻeiki ʻoe Senitaile ʻoku nau faʻa puleʻi ʻakinautolu; pea ko honau houʻeiki ʻoku nau fai faʻiteliha kiate kinautolu.
but Jesus having called them near, saith to them, 'Ye have known that they who are considered to rule the nations do exercise lordship over them, and their great ones do exercise authority upon them;
43 Ka ʻe ʻikai pehē ʻiate kimoutolu: ka ko ia ʻoku loto ke lahi ʻiate kimoutolu, ke hoko ia ko homou tauhi:
but not so shall it be among you; but whoever may will to become great among you, he shall be your minister,
44 Pea ko ia ʻiate kimoutolu ʻoku loto ke ʻeiki, ʻe hoko ia ko e tamaioʻeiki ʻamoutolu kotoa pē.
and whoever of you may will to become first, he shall be servant of all;
45 He naʻe ʻikai ke haʻu ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata ke tauhia ia, ka ke tauhi, pea ke foaki ʻene moʻui ko e huhuʻi ʻoe tokolahi.”
for even the Son of Man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.'
46 Pea naʻa nau haʻu ki Seliko: pea ʻi heʻenau ō ʻi Seliko mo ʻene kau ākonga, mo e kakai tokolahi, naʻe nofo ʻo kole ʻi he veʻehala [motuʻa ]ʻae kui ko Patimiusi, ko e foha ʻo Timiusi.
And they come to Jericho, and as he is going forth from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, a son of Timaeus — Bartimaeus the blind — was sitting beside the way begging,
47 Pea kuo fanongo ia ko Sisu ʻo Nāsaleti ia, naʻe kamata tangi kalanga ia, ʻo pehē, “Sisu, Foha ʻo Tevita, ʻaloʻofa mai kiate au.”
and having heard that it is Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and to say, 'The Son of David — Jesus! deal kindly with me;'
48 Pea lolomi ia ʻe he tokolahi ke fakalongo pē: kae ʻāsili ai ʻaupito ʻene kalanga, “Foha ʻo Tevita, ʻaloʻofa kiate au.”
and many were rebuking him, that he might keep silent, but the more abundantly he cried out, 'Son of David, deal kindly with me.'
49 Pea tuʻu ʻa Sisu, ʻo fekau ke ui kiate ia. Pea naʻa nau ui ʻae tangata kui, mo pehē kiate ia, “Ke ke fiemālie, tuʻu; ʻoku ne ui koe.”
And Jesus having stood, he commanded him to be called, and they call the blind man, saying to him, 'Take courage, rise, he doth call thee;'
50 Pea siʻaki ʻe ia hono kofu, kae tuʻu hake, ʻo haʻu kia Sisu.
and he, having cast away his garment, having risen, did come unto Jesus.
51 Pea lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo ne pehē kiate ia, “Ko e hā ho loto ke u fai kiate koe?” Pea pehēange ʻe he tangata kui kiate ia, “ʻEiki, ke ʻā hoku mata.”
And answering, Jesus saith to him, 'What wilt thou I may do to thee?' and the blind man said to him, 'Rabboni, that I may see again;'
52 Pea pehē ʻe Sisu kiate ia, “ʻAlu; kuo fakamoʻui koe ʻe hoʻo tui.” Pea ʻā leva ia, ʻo ne muimui kia Sisu ʻi he hala.
and Jesus said to him, 'Go, thy faith hath saved thee:' and immediately he saw again, and was following Jesus in the way.
