1 Ka naʻe ʻalu ʻa Sisu ki he moʻunga ʻoe ʻOlive.
And at dawn he came again to the temple,
2 Pea toe haʻu hengihengi ia ki he falelotu lahi, pea haʻu ʻae kakai kotoa pē kiate ia; pea nofo ia, ʻo ako kiate kinautolu.
and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;
3 Pea ko e kau tangata tohi mo e Fālesi naʻa nau ʻomi kiate ia ʻae fefine naʻe moʻua ʻi he tono tangata; ʻonau tuku ia ki he haʻohaʻonga,
and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
4 Pea nau pehē kiate ia, “Akonaki, naʻe moʻua ʻae fefine ni lolotonga ʻene tono tangata.
they say to him, 'Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime — committing adultery,
5 Pea ko eni, naʻe fekau ʻe Mōsese kiate kimautolu ʻi he fono, ke tolongaki ia ʻaki ʻae maka: ka ko e hā hoʻo lea?”
and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'
6 Naʻa nau lea pehē, ko ʻenau ʻahiʻahiʻi ia, koeʻuhi ke nau talakoviʻi ai ia. Ka naʻe tulolo hifo ʻa Sisu, pea tohi ʻaki hono tuhu ki he kelekele.
and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,
7 Pea ʻi heʻenau kei fehuʻi pe kiate ia, naʻe tuʻu ki ʻolunga ia, ʻo ne pehē kiate kinautolu, “Ko ia ia ʻiate kimoutolu ʻoku taʻeangahala, ke lī ʻe ia ʻae fuofua maka ki ai.”
and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, 'The sinless of you — let him first cast the stone at her;'
8 Pea toe tulolo ia, ʻo tohi ki he kelekele.
and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,
9 Pea ko kinautolu naʻe fanongo ai, ʻi he valokia ʻakinautolu ʻe honau ʻatamai, naʻa nau taki taha ʻalu kituʻa, ʻo fuofua fai mei he ki muʻa ʻo aʻu ki he ki mui: pea toe tokotaha ʻa Sisu, kae tuʻu ʻae fefine ʻi loto.
and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders — unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 Pea kuo tuʻu hake ʻa Sisu, ʻo ʻikai mamata ki ha taha ka ko e fefine pe, pea pehē ʻe ia ki ai, “Fefine, ko e fē ʻakinautolu naʻa nau fakaʻiloʻi koe?” ʻOku ʻikai fakahalaia koe ʻe ha taha?
And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, 'Woman, where are those — thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'
11 Pea pehē ʻe ia, “ʻEiki, ʻoku ʻikai ha taha. Pea talaange ʻe Sisu kiate ia, “Pea ʻoku ʻikai te u fakahalaia koe: ʻalu pea ʻoua ʻe toe fai angahala.”
and she said, 'No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, 'Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'
12 Pea toe lea ai ʻa Sisu kiate kinautolu, ʻo pehē, “Ko au ko e maama ʻo māmani: ko ia ʻoku muimui ʻiate au, ʻe ʻikai ʻalu ia ʻi he poʻuli, ka ʻe ʻiate ia ʻae maama ʻoe moʻui.”
Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'
13 Ko ia naʻe pehē ai ʻae kau Fālesi kiate ia, “ʻOku ke fakamoʻoni kiate koe; ʻoku ʻikai moʻoni hoʻo fakamoʻoni.
The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, 'Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'
14 Pea leaange ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehē kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku ou fakamoʻoni kiate au, ka ʻoku moʻoni ʻeku fakamoʻoni: he ʻoku ou ʻilo ʻaia ʻoku ou haʻu mei ai, mo ia ʻoku ou ʻalu ki ai; ka ʻoku ʻikai te mou ʻilo ʻaia ʻoku ou haʻu mei ai, pe ko ia ʻoku ou ʻalu ki ai.
Jesus answered and said to them, 'And if I testify of myself — my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye — ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.
15 ʻOku mou fakamaau fakakakano pē; ʻoku ʻikai te u fakamaau ha tokotaha.
'Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,
16 Pea kapau te u fakamaau, ʻoku moʻoni ʻeku fakamaau he ʻoku ʻikai teu tokotaha pe, ka ko au mo e Tamai naʻa ne fekau au.
and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;
17 Pea kuo tohi foki ʻi hoʻomou fono, ko e fakamoʻoni ʻae tangata ʻe toko ua ʻoku moʻoni.
and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;
18 Ko e tokotaha au ʻoku ou fakamoʻoni au, pea ko e Tamai naʻa ne fekau au ʻoku ne fakamoʻoni kiate au.”
I am [one] who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'
19 Pea naʻa nau pehē kiate ia, “Ko e fē hoʻo Tamai? Pea talaange ʻe Sisu, ʻOku ʻikai te mou ʻilo au, pe ko ʻeku Tamai: ka ne mou ʻilo au, pehē, kuo mou ʻilo mo ʻeku Tamai foki.
They said, therefore, to him, 'Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, 'Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'
20 Naʻe lea ʻaki ʻe Sisu ʻae ngaahi lea ni ʻi he tukunga koloa, ʻi heʻene akonaki ʻi he falelotu lahi: pea naʻe ʻikai puke ia ʻe ha taha; he naʻe teʻeki hokosia hono ʻaho.
These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;
21 Pea toe tala ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku ou ʻalu, pea te mou kumi kiate au, ka te mou mate ʻi hoʻomou angahala: ko e potu ʻoku ou ʻalu ki ai, ʻe ʻikai te mou hokosia.”
therefore said Jesus again to them, 'I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'
22 Pea pehē ai ʻae kakai Siu, “ʻE tāmateʻi ʻe ia ia? He ʻoku ne pehē, ‘Ko e potu ʻoku ou ʻalu ki ai, ʻe ʻikai te mou hokosia.’”
The Jews, therefore, said, 'Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'
23 Pea tala ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku mei lalo ʻakimoutolu; ʻoku mei ʻolunga au: ʻoku ʻo māmani ʻakimoutolu; ʻoku ʻikai ʻo māmani au.
and he said to them, 'Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;
24 Ko ia naʻaku lea ai kiate kimoutolu, te mou mate ʻi hoʻomou angahala: he kapau ʻoku ʻikai te mou tui ‘ko au ia,’ te mou mate pe ʻi hoʻomou angahala.”
I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.'
25 Pea naʻa nau lea ai kiate ia, “Ko hai koe?” Pea pehēange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “ʻAia pe naʻaku tala ʻi muʻa kiate kimoutolu.”
They said, therefore, to him, 'Thou — who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, 'Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;
26 ʻOku lahi ʻae meʻa ke u tala mo valokiʻi ʻiate kimoutolu: ka ko ia naʻa ne fekau au ʻoku moʻoni ia; pea ʻoku ou fakahā ki māmani ʻae ngaahi meʻa ko ia kuo u fanongo ʻiate ia.
many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I — what things I heard from Him — these I say to the world.'
27 Naʻe ʻikai te nau ʻilo ko ʻene lea kiate kinautolu ki he Tamai.
They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;
28 Pea pehē ai ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Hili hoʻomou hiki ki ʻolunga ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata, pea te mou toki ʻilo ‘ko au ia,’ pea mo ʻeku taʻefai-ha-meʻa ʻiate au pe; kae hangē hono akoʻi au ʻe heʻeku Tamai, [ʻoku pehē ]ʻeku lea ki he ngaahi meʻa ni.
Jesus, therefore, said to them, 'When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am [he]; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;
29 Pea ko ia naʻa ne fekau au ʻoku ʻiate au: ʻoku ʻikai siʻaki au ke tokotaha pe ʻe he Tamai; he ʻoku ou fai maʻuaipē ʻae ngaahi meʻa ʻoku lelei ai ia.”
and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'
30 Pea ʻi heʻene leaʻaki ʻae ngaahi lea ni, naʻe tui ʻae tokolahi kiate ia.
As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;
31 Pea pehē ai ʻe Sisu ki he kau Siu naʻe tui kiate ia, “Kapau te mou nofomaʻu ʻi heʻeku lea, pea ko ʻeku kau ākonga moʻoni ʻakimoutolu;
Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, 'If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,
32 Pea te mou ʻilo ʻae moʻoni, pea ʻe fakatauʻatāinaʻi ʻakimoutolu ʻe he moʻoni.”
and the truth shall make you free.'
33 Pea pehē ʻe he niʻihi kiate ia, “Ko e hako ʻo ʻEpalahame ʻakimautolu, pea naʻe ʻikai te mau pōpula ki ha taha: pea ʻoku fēfeeʻi ʻa hoʻo lau, ‘ʻE fakatauʻatāinaʻi ʻakimoutolu?’”
They answered him, 'Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say — Ye shall become free?'
34 Pea talaange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala atu kiate kimoutolu, Ko ia ʻoku fai angahala, ko e pōpula ia ki he angahala.
Jesus answered them, 'Verily, verily, I say to you — Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,
and the servant doth not remain in the house — to the age, the son doth remain — to the age; (aiōn g165)
36 Ko ia kapau ʻe fakatauʻatāinaʻi ʻakimoutolu ʻe he ʻAlo, te mou tauʻatāina moʻoni.
if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.
37 ʻOku ou ʻilo ko e hako ʻo ʻEpalahame ʻakimoutolu; ka ʻoku mou kumi ke tāmateʻi au, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai ʻi homou loto ʻa ʻeku akonaki.
'I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;
38 ʻOku ou lea ʻaki ʻaia kuo u ʻiloʻi ʻi heʻeku Tamai: pea ʻoku mou fai ʻaia kuo mou ʻiloʻi ʻi hoʻomou tamai.”
I — that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father — ye do.'
39 Naʻa nau leaange, ʻo pehē kiate ia, “Ko ʻemau tamai ʻa ʻEpalahame.” Pea talaange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Ka ne ko e fānau ʻa ʻEpalahame ʻakimoutolu, pehē, te mou fai ʻae ngaahi ngāue ʻa ʻEpalahame.
They answered and said to him, 'Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, 'If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;
40 Ka ko eni ʻoku mou kumi ke tāmateʻi au, ko e tangata kuo tala ʻae moʻoni kiate kimoutolu, ʻaia kuo u fanongo ʻi he ʻOtua: naʻe ʻikai fai pehē ʻe ʻEpalahame.
and now, ye seek to kill me — a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;
41 ʻOku mou fai ʻae ngāue ʻa hoʻomou tamai.” Pea naʻa nau pehē ai kiate ia, “ʻOku ʻikai te mau tupu ʻi he feʻauaki; ʻoku taha pe ʻemau Tamai, ko e ʻOtua.”
ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, 'We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have — God;'
42 Pea talaange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Ka ne ko hoʻomou Tamai ʻae ʻOtua, te mou ʻofa kiate au: he naʻaku tupu ai ʻo haʻu mei he ʻOtua; pea naʻe ʻikai te u haʻu ʻiate au pe, ka naʻa ne fekau au.
Jesus then said to them, 'If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;
43 Ko e hā ʻoku ʻikai ai te mou ʻilo ʻeku lea? Ka koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai te mou fie fai ki heʻeku akonaki.
wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.
44 ʻOku mou ʻi [hoʻomou ]tamai ko e tēvolo, pea ko e holi ʻa hoʻomou tamai te mou fai. Ko e fakapō ia talu mei he kamataʻanga, pea naʻe ʻikai nofomaʻu ʻi he moʻoni koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai ha moʻoni ʻiate ia. ʻOka lea ʻaki ʻe ia ʻae loi, ʻoku ne lea ʻaki ʻene meʻa ʻaʻana: he ko e loi ia, mo e tamai ʻo ia.
'Ye are of a father — the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar — also his father.
45 Pea ko e meʻa ʻi heʻeku tala ʻae moʻoni [kiate kimoutolu], ʻoku ʻikai ai te mou tui kiate au.
'And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.
46 Ko hai ʻiate kimoutolu ʻoku ne fakaʻilo haʻaku angahala? Pea kapau ʻoku ou lea ʻaki ʻae moʻoni ko e hā ʻoku ʻikai ai te mou tui kiate au?
Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?
47 Ko ia ʻoku ʻi he ʻOtua, ʻoku fanongo ia ki he ngaahi folofola ʻae ʻOtua: pea pehē, ʻoku ʻikai te mou fanongo, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai ʻi he ʻOtua ʻakimoutolu.”
he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'
48 Pea leaange ʻae kakai Siu, [ʻonau ]pehē kiate ia, “ʻIkai ʻoku moʻoni ʻemau pehē, Ko e Samēlia koe, pea ʻoku ʻiate koe ha tēvolo?”
The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, 'Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'
49 Pea talaange ʻe Sisu, “ʻOku ʻikai ha tēvolo ʻiate au; ka ʻoku ou fakaʻapaʻapa ki heʻeku Tamai, pea ʻoku mou fakalieliaʻi au.
Jesus answered, 'I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;
50 Pea ʻoku ʻikai teu kumi ʻae ongoongolelei ʻo ʻoku: ʻoku ai ha tokotaha ʻoku ne kumiʻi mo fakamaauʻi.
and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;
51 Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala kiate kimoutolu, Kapau ʻe fai ʻe ha tangata ki heʻeku lea, ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito mamata ia ki he mate.” (aiōn g165)
verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see — to the age.' (aiōn g165)
52 Pea lea ai ʻae kakai Siu kiate ia, “Ta ʻoku mau ʻilo ʻeni ʻoku ʻiate koe ha tēvolo. Kuo mate ʻa ʻEpalahame, mo e kau palōfita; ka ʻoku ke pehē, Kapau ʻe fai ʻe ha tangata ki heʻeku lea, ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito te ne kamata ʻae mate. (aiōn g165)
The Jews, therefore, said to him, 'Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death — to the age! (aiōn g165)
53 ʻOku ke lahi koe ki heʻemau tamai ko ʻEpalahame, ʻaia kuo mate? Pea, mate mo e kau palōfita: ʻoku ke pehē ko hai koe?”
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'
54 Pea talaange ʻe Sisu, “Kapau te u fakaongolelei au, ko e meʻa noa pē ʻeku fakaongo: ko ʻeku Tamai ko ia ia ʻoku ne fakaongoleleiʻi au; ʻaia ʻoku mou pehē ai, ko homou ʻOtua ia:
Jesus answered, 'If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;
55 Ka kuo ʻikai te mou ʻilo ia, ka ʻoku ou ʻilo ia: pea kapau te u pehē, ʻOku ʻikai te u ʻiloa ia, te u loi au ʻo hangē ko kimoutolu: ka ʻoku ou ʻilo ia, pe au tuitala ki heʻene folofola.
and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you — speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;
56 Naʻe mātuʻaki fiefia ʻa hoʻomou tamai ko ʻEpalahame ke mamata ki hoku ʻaho: pea naʻe mamata ia, pea fiefia.
Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'
57 Pea lea ʻae kakai Siu kiate ia, “ʻOku teʻeki ai nimangofulu taʻu ho motuʻa, pea kuo ke mamata kia ʻEpalahame?”
The Jews, therefore, said unto him, 'Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'
58 Pea talaange ʻe Sisu kiate kinautolu, “Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala kiate kimoutolu, Ki muʻa ʻia ʻEpalahame, ‘ʻOku ou ʻi ai au.’”
Jesus said to them, 'Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming — I am;'
59 Pea naʻa nau toʻo hake ʻae ngaahi maka, ke nau lisingi ʻaki ia; ka naʻe fufū ʻe Sisu ia, pea ʻalu ia ʻi honau lotolotonga mei he falelotu lahi, pea hao ai.
they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
