Sione 3
1 Pea naʻe ai ha tangata ʻi he kau Fālesi, ko Nikotimasi hono hingoa, ko e ʻeiki [ia ]ʻi he kakai Siu.
And there was a man of the Pharisees there, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 Pea naʻe haʻu ia kia Sisu ʻi he poʻuli, ʻo ne pehē, “Lāpai, ʻoku mau ʻilo ko e akonaki koe kuo haʻu mei he ʻOtua: he ʻoku ʻikai ha tangata ʻoku faʻa fai ʻae ngaahi mana ni ʻoku ke fai, ʻo kapau ʻoku ʻikai ʻiate ia ʻae ʻOtua.”
And he came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God; for no one can work those signs which thou workest, unless God be with him.
3 Pea lea ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehēange kiate ia, “Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala kiate koe, Kapau ʻe ʻikai fanauʻi foʻou ha tangata, ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito mamata ia ki he puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua.”
Jesus replied, and said to him: Verily, verily, I say to thee, That, unless a man be born anew, he cannot behold the kingdom of God.
4 Pea pehē ʻe Nikotimasi kiate ia, “ʻE faʻa fanauʻi fēfeeʻi ʻae tangata ʻoku motuʻa? ʻE toe faʻa hū ia ki he manāva ʻo ʻene faʻē, pea fanauʻi?”
Nicodemus said to him: How can an old man be born? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?
5 Pea pehē ʻe Sisu, “Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala kiate koe, Kapau ʻe ʻikai fanauʻi ʻae tangata ʻi he vai pea mo e Laumālie, ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito faʻa hū ia ki he puleʻanga ʻoe ʻOtua.
Jesus replied, and said to him Verily, verily, I say to thee, That, unless a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 Ko ia kuo fanauʻi ʻi he kakano, ko e kakano ia; pea ko ia kuo fanauʻi ʻi he Laumālie, ko e laumālie ia.
That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.
7 ʻOua te ke ofo ʻi heʻeku tala kiate koe, ʻOku totonu ke mou fanauʻi foʻou.
Be not surprised that I said to thee, Ye must be born anew.
8 ʻOku maʻili ʻae matangi ko hono faʻiteliha pe, pea ʻoku ke fanongo ki hono mumuhu ʻo ia, ka ʻoku ʻikai te ke ʻilo pe ʻoku haʻu mei fē, pe ʻalu ki fē ia: ʻoku pehē pe ʻaia kotoa pē ʻoku fanauʻi ʻi he Laumālie.”
The wind bloweth where it chooseth; and thou hearest its sound, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one, that is born of the Spirit.
9 Pea leaange ʻa Nikotimasi, ʻo ne pehē kiate ia, “ʻOku fēfē nai ʻae ngaahi meʻa ni?”
Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be?
10 Pea leaange ʻa Sisu, ʻo pehē kiate ia, “He ko e akonaki koe ʻi ʻIsileli, pea ʻoku ʻikai te ke ʻiloa ʻae ngaahi meʻa ni?
Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a teacher of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Ko e moʻoni, ko e moʻoni, ʻoku ou tala kiate koe, ʻOku mau lea ʻaki ʻaia ʻoku mau ʻilo, ʻo fakapapau ʻaia kuo mau mamata; ka ʻoku ʻikai te mou maʻu ʻemau fakamoʻoni.
Verily, verily, I say to thee: We speak, what we know; and we testify to what we have seen; but ye receive not our testimony.
12 Kapau ʻoku ʻikai te mou tui ʻi heʻeku tala kiate kimoutolu ʻae meʻa ʻoe māmani, ʻe fēfē hoʻomou tui, ʻo kapau teu tala kiate kimoutolu ʻae meʻa ʻoe langi?
If I have spoken to you of things on earth, and ye believe not; how will ye believe, if I speak of things in heaven?
13 Pea ʻoku teʻeki ai ʻalu hake ha tangata ki he langi, ka ko ia pe naʻe ʻalu hifo mei he langi, ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata ʻaia ʻoku ʻi he langi.”
And no one hath ascended to heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
14 Pea hangē naʻe hiki hake ʻe Mōsese ʻae ngata ʻi he toafa, ʻe pehē hono hiki ʻae Foha ʻoe tangata ki ʻolunga:
And as Moses elevated the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 Koeʻuhi ko ia kotoa pē ʻoku tui kiate ia ke ʻoua naʻa ʻauha ia, kae maʻu ʻae moʻui taʻengata. (aiōnios g166)
that every one who believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life eternal. (aiōnios g166)
16 He naʻe ʻofa pehē ʻae ʻOtua ki māmani, naʻa ne foaki hono ʻAlo pe taha naʻe fakatupu, koeʻuhi ko ia kotoa pē ʻe tui kiate ia ke ʻoua naʻa ʻauha, kae maʻu ʻae moʻui taʻengata. (aiōnios g166)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him, should not perish, but should have life eternal. (aiōnios g166)
17 He naʻe ʻikai fekau ʻe he ʻOtua hono ʻAlo ki māmani ke fakamalaʻia ʻa māmani: ka koeʻuhi ke moʻui ʻa māmani ʻiate ia.
For God sent not his Son into the world, to condemn the world; but that the world might live by means of him.
18 Ko ia ʻoku tui kiate ia, ʻoku ʻikai fakamalaʻia ia: ka ko ia ʻoku ʻikai tui, ʻoku fakamalaʻia ni ia, koeʻuhi ʻoku ʻikai tui ia ʻi he huafa ʻoe ʻAlo pe taha naʻe tupu ʻi he ʻOtua.
He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not, is already condemned; because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 Pea ko e malaʻiaʻanga eni, koeʻuhi kuo haʻu ʻae maama ki māmani, pea ʻofa lahi ʻae kakai ki he poʻuli ʻi he maama, koeʻuhi ʻoku kovi ʻenau ngaahi ngāue.
And this is the ground of condemnation, that light hath come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, for their deeds have been evil.
20 He ko ia fulipē ʻoku fai kovi ʻoku fehiʻa ki he maama, pea ʻoku ʻikai haʻu ia ki he maama, telia naʻa fakahā ai ʻene ngaahi ngāue.
For every one that doeth abominable things, hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 Ka ko ia ʻoku fai ki he moʻoni, ʻoku haʻu ia ki he maama, koeʻuhi ke fakahā ai ʻene ngaahi ngāue, ʻoku fai ia ʻi he ʻOtua.
But he that doeth right, cometh to the light, that his works may be known to be done in God.
22 Pea hili eni, naʻe haʻu ʻa Sisu mo ʻene kau ākonga ki he fonua ko Siutea; pea nofo ai mo kinautolu, ʻo fai papitaiso.
After these things, came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he abode with them, and baptized.
23 Pea naʻe fai papitaiso ʻa Sione foki ʻi ʻEnoni ʻo ofi ki Selemi, koeʻuhi naʻe ʻi ai ʻae vai lahi: pea naʻe haʻu ʻae kakai, ʻo papitaiso.
And John also was baptizing in 'non, which is near to Salim, because there were many waters there: and the people came, and were baptized.
24 He naʻe teʻeki ai ʻave ʻa Sione ki he fale fakapōpula.
For John had not yet fallen into prison.
25 Pea naʻe kikihi ʻae kau ākonga ʻa Sione mo e kau Siu ki he fakamaʻa.
And one of John's disciples and a certain Jew had disputed respecting purification.
26 Pea naʻa nau haʻu kia Sione ʻonau pehē kiate ia, “Lāpai, ko ia ia naʻe ʻiate koe ʻituʻa Sioatani, ʻaia naʻa ke fakamoʻoni ki ai, vakai, ʻoku fai papitaiso ʻe ia, pea ʻoku ʻalu ange ʻae kakai kotoa pē kiate ia.”
And they came to John, and said to him: Our Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond Jordan, and of whom thou gavest testimony, lo, he also baptizeth; and many go after him.
27 Pea leaange ʻa Sione, ʻo pehē, “ʻOku ʻikai faʻa maʻu ʻe ha tangata ha meʻa, ka ʻi hono foaki ia kiate ia mei he langi.
John answered, and said to them: A man cannot take any thing by his own choice, unless it be given him from heaven.
28 ʻOku mou fakamoʻoni kiate au naʻaku pehē, ‘ʻOku ʻikai ko e Kalaisi au, ka kuo fekau au ke muʻomuʻa ʻiate ia.’
Ye are witnesses for me, that I said: I am not the Messiah, but am sent to go before him.
29 Ko ia ʻoku ne maʻu ʻae taʻahine, ko e tangata taʻane ia: ka ko e kāinga ʻoe tangata taʻane ʻoku tuʻu ʻo fanongo kiate ia, ʻoku fiefia lahi ia ko e meʻa ʻi he leʻo ʻoe tangata taʻane: ko ia ko ʻeku fiefia ni kuo kakato.
He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: and the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and listeneth to him, rejoiceth with great joy on account of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy, therefore, lo, it is full.
30 ʻE fakaʻaʻau ia ki muʻa, ka te u fakaʻaʻau au ki mui.”
To him must be increase, and to me decrease.
31 Ko ia ʻoku haʻu mei ʻolunga, ʻoku māʻolunga taha pe ia: ko ia ʻoku mei he māmani, ʻoku fakamaama ia, pea ʻoku lea ia ki he māmani: ko ia ʻoku haʻu mei he langi, ʻoku māʻolunga taha pe ia.
For he that cometh from above, is above all; and he that is from the earth, is of the earth, and talketh of the earth. He that cometh from heaven, is above all;
32 Pea ko e meʻa kuo ne mamata mo ongoʻi, ko ia ʻoku ne fakamoʻoni ki ai; ka ʻoku ʻikai maʻu ʻe ha tangata ʻene fakamoʻoni.
and what he hath seen and heard, he testifieth; and his testimony, no one receiveth.
33 Ko ia kuo ne tui ki heʻene fakamoʻoni, kuo ne ʻai ki ai hono fakaʻilonga ʻoku moʻoni ʻae ʻOtua.
But he that receiveth his testimony, hath set his seal, that God is true.
34 He ko ia kuo fekau ʻe he ʻOtua, ʻoku ne lea ʻaki ʻae ngaahi lea ʻae ʻOtua: he ʻoku ʻikai tuku fuofua ʻe he ʻOtua ʻae Laumālie [kiate ia].
For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God; for God hath not given the Spirit by measure to him.
35 ʻOku ʻofa ʻae Tamai ki he ʻAlo, pea kuo ne tuku ʻae meʻa kotoa pē ki hono nima.
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given every thing into his hands.
36 Ko ia ʻoku tui ki he ʻAlo, ʻoku ne maʻu ʻae moʻui taʻengata: pea ko ia ʻoku ʻikai tui ki he ʻAlo, ʻe ʻikai te ne mamata ki he moʻui; ka ʻoku nofo pe kiate ia ʻae houhau ʻoe ʻOtua. (aiōnios g166)
He that believeth on the Son, hath life eternal; but he who obeyeth not the Son, shall not see life. but the wrath of God will abide upon him. (aiōnios g166)
