1 Pea naʻe toki tali ʻe Elifasi mei Timani, ʻo ne pehē,
Forsothe Eliphat Themanytes answeride, and seide,
2 “He ʻoku taau mo e tangata poto ke lau meʻa vaʻinga, mo fakapito hono kete ʻaki ʻae matangi hahake?
Whether a wise man schal answere, as spekynge ayens the wynd, and schal fille his stomac with brennyng, `that is, ire?
3 ‌ʻOku taau ʻene leaʻaki ʻae lea taʻeʻaonga? Pe ko e ngaahi lau ʻe ʻikai te ne lavaʻi ʻaki ha lelei?
For thou repreuest hym bi wordis, which is not lijk thee, and thou spekist that, that spedith not to thee.
4 ‌ʻIo, ʻoku ke liʻaki ʻae manavahē, pea ke taʻofi ʻae lotu ʻi he ʻao ʻoe ʻOtua.
As myche as is in thee, thou hast avoidid drede; and thou hast take awey preyeris bifor God.
5 He ʻoku lea ʻaki ʻe ho ngutu ʻa hoʻo angahala, ka ʻoku ke fili ki he ʻelelo ʻoe fakaoloolo.
For wickidnesse hath tauyt thi mouth, and thou suest the tunge of blasfemeris.
6 ‌ʻOku talatalaakiʻi koe ʻe ho ngutu pe ʻoʻou, kae ʻikai ko au: ʻio, ko ho loungutu pe ʻoʻou ʻoku fakamoʻoni kiate koe.
Thi tunge, and not Y, schal condempne thee, and thi lippis schulen answere thee.
7 “He ko e ʻuluaki tangata koe naʻe fanauʻi? Pe naʻe fakatupu koe ʻi muʻa ʻi he ngaahi moʻunga?
Whether thou art borun the firste man, and art formed bifor alle little hillis?
8 He kuo ke fanongo ʻe koe ki he meʻa fufū ʻae ʻOtua? Pea ʻoku ke fakangata ʻae poto kiate koe?
Whether thou herdist the counsel of God, and his wisdom is lower than thou?
9 Ko e hā ʻoku ke ʻilo, ka ʻoku ʻikai te mau ʻilo? Ko e hā ʻoku ke ʻilo pau, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai ʻiate kimautolu?
What thing knowist thou, whiche we knowen not? What thing vndurstondist thou, whiche we witen not?
10 ‌ʻOku ʻiate kimautolu ʻae ʻuluhinā mo e kau mātuʻa, ʻoku motuʻa lahi ʻi hoʻo tamai.
Bothe wise men and elde, myche eldre than thi fadris, ben among vs.
11 He ʻoku siʻi ʻae ngaahi fakafiemālie ʻae ʻOtua kiate koe? He ʻoku ai ha meʻa fakalilolilo ʻiate koe?
Whether it is greet, that God coumforte thee? But thi schrewid wordis forbeden this.
12 Ko e hā ʻoku ʻāvea ai koe ʻe ho loto? Pea ʻoku lalama ho mata ʻi he hā.
What reisith thin herte thee, and thou as thenkynge grete thingis hast iyen astonyed?
13 Koeʻuhi ʻoku ke fakafoki ho loto ke tuʻu ki he ʻOtua, pea tuku ke tafe ʻae ngaahi lea ni mei ho ngutu?
What bolneth thi spirit ayens God, that thou brynge forth of thi mouth siche wordis?
14 Ko e hā ʻae tangata, ke pehē ʻoku maʻa ia? Pe ha taha ʻoku fanauʻi ʻe he fefine, ke pehē ʻoku tonuhia ia?
What is a man, that he be with out wem, and that he borun of a womman appere iust?
15 Vakai, ʻoku ʻikai falala siʻi ʻe ia ki heʻene kau māʻoniʻoni; ʻio, naʻa mo e ngaahi langi ʻoku ʻikai maʻa ia ʻi hono ʻao.
Lo! noon among hise seyntis is vnchaungable, and heuenes ben not cleene in his siyt.
16 Ka ʻe fēfē hono lahi hake ʻoe fakalielia mo e ʻuli ʻoe tangata, ʻaia ʻoku ne inumia ʻae angahala ʻo hangē ha vai?
How myche more a man abhomynable and vnprofitable, that drynkith wickidnesse as water?
17 “Te u fakahā kiate koe, fanongo kiate au; pea ko ia kuo u mamata ai te u fakamatala atu;
I schal schewe to thee, here thou me; Y schal telle to thee that, that Y siy.
18 ‌ʻAia naʻe tala ʻe he kakai poto mei heʻenau ngaahi tamai, ʻo ʻikai fufū ia:
Wise men knoulechen, and hiden not her fadris.
19 ‌ʻAkinautolu pē naʻe foaki ki ai ʻae fonua, pea naʻe ʻikai feʻaluʻaki ha muli ʻiate kinautolu.
To whiche aloone the erthe is youun, and an alien schal not passe bi hem.
20 ‌ʻOku langa mamahi ʻae tangata angahala ʻi he ʻaho kotoa pē, pea ʻoku fufū mei he fakaaoao ʻae lau ʻoe ngaahi taʻu.
A wickid man is proud in alle hise daies; and the noumbre of hise yeeris and of his tirauntrie is vncerteyn.
21 Ko e ongo fakailifia ʻoku ʻi hono telinga: ʻi he lolotonga ʻo ʻene monūʻia ʻe hoko kiate ia ʻae fakaʻauha.
The sown of drede is euere in hise eeris, and whanne pees is, he supposith euere tresouns.
22 ‌ʻOku ʻikai ʻamanaki ʻe ia ke ne liu mai mei he fakapoʻuli, pea ʻoku talia ia ʻe he heletā.
He bileueth not that he may turne ayen fro derknessis to liyt; and biholdith aboute on ech side a swerd.
23 ‌ʻOku ʻalu fano pe ia ʻo kumi ʻae mā, ʻo pehē, ‘Ko mā ia?’ ʻOku ne ʻilo ʻoku ofi ʻae ʻaho ʻoe fakapoʻuli.
Whanne he stirith hym to seke breed, he woot, that the dai of derknessis is maad redi in his hond.
24 ‌ʻE fakamanavahēʻi ia ʻe he mamahi mo e feinga; te na ikuna ia, ʻo hangē ha tuʻi kuo teu ki he tuʻa.
Tribulacioun schal make hym aferd, and angwisch schal cumpas hym, as a kyng which is maad redi to batel.
25 He ʻoku ne mafao atu hono nima ki he ʻOtua, ʻo ne fakamālohi ia ʻo tuʻu ki he Māfimafi.
For he helde forth his hond ayens God, and he was maad strong ayens Almyyti God.
26 ‌ʻOku ne ʻohofi kiate ia, ʻio, ki hono kia, ki he ngaahi potu matolu ʻo hono sifa fatafata:
He ran with neck reisid ayens God, and he was armed with fat nol.
27 Koeʻuhi ʻoku ne fai ke fuʻu pupula hono mata, pea ne fangapesi ke matolu ʻae ngako ʻi hono ngaahi potu.
Fatnesse, that is, pride `comyng forth of temporal aboundaunce, hilide his face, `that is, the knowyng of vndurstondyng, and outward fatnesse hangith doun of his sidis.
28 Ka ʻoku ne nofo ʻi he ngaahi kolo lala, ʻi he ngaahi fale ʻoku ʻikai nofo ai ha taha, ʻaia kuo tuʻutuʻuni ko e ngaahi tuʻunga veve.
He schal dwelle in desolat citees, and in deseert, `ethir forsakun, housis, that ben turned in to biriels.
29 ‌ʻE ʻikai koloaʻia ia, ʻe ʻikai tuʻumaʻu ʻene ngaahi meʻa, pea ʻe ʻikai te ne faʻa fai ke fakatolonga hono lelei ʻi he fonua.
He schal not be maad riche, nether his catel schal dwelle stidefastli; nether he schal sende his roote in the erthe,
30 ‌ʻE ʻikai ʻalu ia mei he fakapoʻuli; ʻe mangia ʻe he afi ʻa hono ngaahi vaʻa, pea ʻi he mānava ʻo hono fofonga ʻe mole atu ia.
nether he schal go awei fro derknessis. Flawme schal make drie hise braunchis, and he schal be takun a wey bi the spirit of his mouth.
31 Ke ʻoua naʻa falala ia ʻaia kuo kākaaʻi ki he vaʻinga: ko hono totongi ko e vaʻinga pe.
Bileue he not veynli disseyued bi errour, that he schal be ayenbouyt bi ony prijs.
32 ‌ʻE fakamoʻoni eni ʻi he teʻeki hoko hono ʻaho, pea ʻe ʻikai maʻuiʻui hono vaʻa.
Bifor that hise daies ben fillid, he schal perische, and hise hondis schulen wexe drye;
33 ‌ʻE lulu ʻe ia ke tō hono fuhi kālepi taʻemomoho ʻo hangē pe ko e vaine, pea te ne fakamokulu hono fisi ʻo hangē pē ko e ʻolive.
he schal be hirt as a vyne in the firste flour of his grape, and as an olyue tre castinge awei his flour.
34 He koeʻuhi ʻe lala ʻae fakatahaʻanga ʻoe kau angahala, pea ʻe fakaʻauha ʻe he afi ʻae ngaahi fale naʻe maʻu ʻaki ʻae koloa kovi.
For the gaderyng togidere of an ipocrite is bareyn, and fier schal deuoure the tabernaclis of hem, that taken yiftis wilfuli.
35 ‌ʻOku nau tuʻituʻia ʻi he pauʻu, pea nau fanauʻi ʻae vaʻinga, pea ʻoku teuteu ʻe honau loto ʻae kākā.
He conseyuede sorewe, and childide wickidnesse, and his wombe makith redi tretcheries.
