1 “Kapau ʻoku ʻilo ha tokotaha kuo tāmateʻi ʻi he fonua ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke ke maʻu, kuo tuku ʻi he ngoue, pea ʻoku ʻikai ʻilo pe ko hai kuo ne tāmateʻi ia:
If one be found slain in the land which YHWH thy Elohim giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him:
2 ‌ʻE toki haʻu ai hoʻo kau mātuʻa mo hoʻo kau fakamaau, pea tenau fakafuofua ki he ngaahi kolo ʻoku tuʻu takatakai ʻiate ia kuo fakapoongi:
Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain:
3 Pea ʻe pehē, ʻilonga ʻae kolo ʻoku ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, ʻio ʻae kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia, tenau ʻomi ha pulu fefine mui ʻaia naʻe ʻikai ngāueʻaki, pea naʻe ʻikai toho meʻa ʻi ha haʻamonga;
And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke;
4 Pea ʻe ʻomi ʻe he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia ʻae pulu fefine mui ki ha teleʻa tokakovi, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai keli pe tō, pea ʻe tutuʻu ai ʻae ʻulu ʻoe pulu fefine mui ʻi he teleʻa.
And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley:
5 Pea ʻe haʻu ʻo ofi ʻae kau taulaʻeiki ko e ngaahi foha ʻo Livai: he kuo fili ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke tauhi kiate ia, pea ke[fai ʻae ]tāpuaki ʻi he huafa ʻo Sihova: pea ʻe fakamaauʻaki ʻenau lea ʻae fakakikihi kotoa pē mo e tā kotoa pē:
And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them YHWH thy Elohim hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of YHWH; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:
6 Pea ko e kau mātuʻa kotoa pē ʻoe kolo ko ia, ʻaia ʻoku tuʻu ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, tenau fanofano honau nima ʻi ʻolunga ʻi he pulu fefine mui ʻaia kuo tutuʻu hono ʻulu ʻi he teleʻa:
And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley:
7 Pea tenau lea ʻo pehē, ‘Naʻe ʻikai lilingi ʻe homau nima ʻae toto ni, pea naʻe ʻikai mamata homau mata ki ai.
And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.
8 Ke ke ʻaloʻofa, ʻE Sihova, ki ho kakai ʻIsileli, ʻaia kuo ke huhuʻi, pea ʻoua naʻa tuku ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni ki ho kakai ʻIsileli. Pea ʻe fakamolemole ʻae toto kiate kinautolu.’
Be merciful, O YHWH, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them.
9 ‌ʻE pehē ʻa hoʻomou tukuange ai meiate kimoutolu ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni, ʻoka ke ka fai ʻaia ʻoku totonu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of YHWH.
10 “ʻOka ke ka ʻalu atu ki he tau ki ho ngaahi fili, pea tuku mai ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ki ho nima, pea kuo ke maʻu pōpula ʻakinautolu,
When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and YHWH thy Elohim hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive,
11 Pea ʻoku ke mamata ʻi he kau pōpula ki ha fefine hoihoifua, pea ʻoku ke tokanga kiate ia koeʻuhi ke hoko ia ko ho uaifi:
And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife;
12 pehē, te ke ʻomi ia ki ʻapi ki ho fale: pea te ne tekefua ia, pea fakanounou hono ngeʻesinima.
Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;
13 Pea ʻe toʻo ʻe ia ʻae kofu ʻo ʻene pōpula ʻiate ia, pea ʻe nofo ia ʻi ho fale, pea ʻe tēngihia ʻe ia ʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē ʻi he māhina kātoa ʻe taha: pea hili ia, ʻe ngofua hoʻo toki ʻalu kiate ia, ʻo hoko ko hono husepāniti, pea ʻe hoko ia ko ho uaifi ʻoʻou.
And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.
14 Pea ʻe pehē, kapau ʻoku ʻikai te ke fiemālie siʻi ʻiate ia, te ke toki tukuange ia ke ʻalu ʻo faʻiteliha pe ia; ka ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito te ke fakatauʻaki ia ʻae paʻanga, ke ʻoua naʻa ke meʻa fakatauʻaki ia, koeʻuhi kuo ke fakavaivaiʻi ia.
And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.
15 “Kapau ʻoku maʻu ʻae uaifi ʻe ua ʻe ha tangata, ko e ʻofeina ʻae taha ka ko e fehiʻanekina ʻae taha, pea kuo na fānau fakatouʻosi pe kiate ia, ʻae ʻofeina mo e fehiʻanekina; pea kapau ko e ʻuluaki foha ko e tama ia ʻo ia ʻoku fehiʻanekina:
If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
16 Pea ʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi heʻene fai ke fakahoko hono ngaahi foha ke maʻu ʻaia ʻoku ʻaʻana, ʻoku ʻikai lelei ke ngaohi ʻae tama ʻae ʻofeina ke ʻuluaki ia ʻo tuʻukimuʻa ʻi he tama ʻae fehiʻanekina, ʻaia ko e ʻuluaki fānau[moʻoni]:
Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:
17 Ka ʻe fakahā ʻe ia ʻae tama ʻae fehiʻanekina ko e ʻuluaki tupu, ʻi heʻene ʻatu kiate ia ʻae vāhenga ʻe ua ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku ne maʻu, he ko e kamataʻanga ia ʻo hono mālohi; ʻoku ʻaʻana pe ʻae lelei ʻoe ʻuluaki tupu.
But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
18 “Kapau ʻoku maʻu ʻe ha tangata ha foha ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai ʻaupito fai talangofua ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene tamai, pe ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene faʻē, pea ʻi heʻena tautea ia, ʻoku ʻikai tokanga ia kiate kinaua:
If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
19 ‌ʻE toki puke ia ʻe heʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē, ʻo ʻomi ia kituʻa ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, pea ki he matapā ʻo honau potu;
Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;
20 Pea te na pehē ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, ‘Ko homa foha ko eni ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻoku ʻikai tui ia ki heʻema fekau: ko e ʻuakai ia mo e konā.’
And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
21 Pea ʻe tolongaki ia ʻe he kau tangata kotoa pē ʻa hono kolo ʻaki ʻae maka, ke mate ai ia: ʻe pehē pe hoʻo motuhi ai ʻae kovi meiate kimoutolu; pea ʻe fanongo ki ai ʻe ʻIsileli kotoa pē, pea manavahē.
And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
22 “Pea kapau kuo fai angahala ʻe ha tangata ʻaia ʻoku totonu ke mate ai ia, pea kuo tonu ke tāmateʻi ia, pea ʻoku ke tautau ia ki he ʻakau:
And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:
23 ‌ʻE ʻikai tuku hono sino ʻi he ʻakau ʻi he pō ʻo ʻaho, ka te ke tanu moʻoni ia ʻi he ʻaho ko ia: (he ko ia kuo tautau ko e malaʻia ia ʻi he ʻOtua; ) koeʻuhi ke ʻoua naʻa halaia ho fonua, ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua kiate koe ko ho tofiʻa.
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of Elohim; ) that thy land be not defiled, which YHWH thy Elohim giveth thee for an inheritance.
