1 “Kapau ʻoku ʻilo ha tokotaha kuo tāmateʻi ʻi he fonua ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke ke maʻu, kuo tuku ʻi he ngoue, pea ʻoku ʻikai ʻilo pe ko hai kuo ne tāmateʻi ia:
If one is found slain, lying in a field in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,
2 ‌ʻE toki haʻu ai hoʻo kau mātuʻa mo hoʻo kau fakamaau, pea tenau fakafuofua ki he ngaahi kolo ʻoku tuʻu takatakai ʻiate ia kuo fakapoongi:
your elders and judges must come out and measure the distance from the victim to the neighboring cities.
3 Pea ʻe pehē, ʻilonga ʻae kolo ʻoku ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, ʻio ʻae kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia, tenau ʻomi ha pulu fefine mui ʻaia naʻe ʻikai ngāueʻaki, pea naʻe ʻikai toho meʻa ʻi ha haʻamonga;
Then the elders of the city nearest the victim shall take a heifer that has never been yoked or used for work,
4 Pea ʻe ʻomi ʻe he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia ʻae pulu fefine mui ki ha teleʻa tokakovi, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai keli pe tō, pea ʻe tutuʻu ai ʻae ʻulu ʻoe pulu fefine mui ʻi he teleʻa.
bring the heifer to a valley with running water that has not been plowed or sown, and break its neck there by the stream.
5 Pea ʻe haʻu ʻo ofi ʻae kau taulaʻeiki ko e ngaahi foha ʻo Livai: he kuo fili ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke tauhi kiate ia, pea ke[fai ʻae ]tāpuaki ʻi he huafa ʻo Sihova: pea ʻe fakamaauʻaki ʻenau lea ʻae fakakikihi kotoa pē mo e tā kotoa pē:
And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and pronounce blessings in His name and to give a ruling in every dispute and case of assault.
6 Pea ko e kau mātuʻa kotoa pē ʻoe kolo ko ia, ʻaia ʻoku tuʻu ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, tenau fanofano honau nima ʻi ʻolunga ʻi he pulu fefine mui ʻaia kuo tutuʻu hono ʻulu ʻi he teleʻa:
Then all the elders of the city nearest the victim shall wash their hands by the stream over the heifer whose neck has been broken,
7 Pea tenau lea ʻo pehē, ‘Naʻe ʻikai lilingi ʻe homau nima ʻae toto ni, pea naʻe ʻikai mamata homau mata ki ai.
and they shall declare, “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.
8 Ke ke ʻaloʻofa, ʻE Sihova, ki ho kakai ʻIsileli, ʻaia kuo ke huhuʻi, pea ʻoua naʻa tuku ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni ki ho kakai ʻIsileli. Pea ʻe fakamolemole ʻae toto kiate kinautolu.’
Accept this atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, and do not hold the shedding of innocent blood against them.” And the bloodshed will be atoned for.
9 ‌ʻE pehē ʻa hoʻomou tukuange ai meiate kimoutolu ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni, ʻoka ke ka fai ʻaia ʻoku totonu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
So you shall purge from among you the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD.
10 “ʻOka ke ka ʻalu atu ki he tau ki ho ngaahi fili, pea tuku mai ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ki ho nima, pea kuo ke maʻu pōpula ʻakinautolu,
When you go to war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hand and you take them captive,
11 Pea ʻoku ke mamata ʻi he kau pōpula ki ha fefine hoihoifua, pea ʻoku ke tokanga kiate ia koeʻuhi ke hoko ia ko ho uaifi:
if you see a beautiful woman among them, and you desire her and want to take her as your wife,
12 pehē, te ke ʻomi ia ki ʻapi ki ho fale: pea te ne tekefua ia, pea fakanounou hono ngeʻesinima.
then you shall bring her into your house. She must shave her head, trim her nails,
13 Pea ʻe toʻo ʻe ia ʻae kofu ʻo ʻene pōpula ʻiate ia, pea ʻe nofo ia ʻi ho fale, pea ʻe tēngihia ʻe ia ʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē ʻi he māhina kātoa ʻe taha: pea hili ia, ʻe ngofua hoʻo toki ʻalu kiate ia, ʻo hoko ko hono husepāniti, pea ʻe hoko ia ko ho uaifi ʻoʻou.
and put aside the clothing of her captivity. After she has lived in your house a full month and mourned her father and mother, you may have relations with her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.
14 Pea ʻe pehē, kapau ʻoku ʻikai te ke fiemālie siʻi ʻiate ia, te ke toki tukuange ia ke ʻalu ʻo faʻiteliha pe ia; ka ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito te ke fakatauʻaki ia ʻae paʻanga, ke ʻoua naʻa ke meʻa fakatauʻaki ia, koeʻuhi kuo ke fakavaivaiʻi ia.
And if you are not pleased with her, you are to let her go wherever she wishes. But you must not sell her for money or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.
If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved, and both bear him sons, but the unloved wife has the firstborn son,
16 Pea ʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi heʻene fai ke fakahoko hono ngaahi foha ke maʻu ʻaia ʻoku ʻaʻana, ʻoku ʻikai lelei ke ngaohi ʻae tama ʻae ʻofeina ke ʻuluaki ia ʻo tuʻukimuʻa ʻi he tama ʻae fehiʻanekina, ʻaia ko e ʻuluaki fānau[moʻoni]:
when that man assigns his inheritance to his sons he must not appoint the son of the beloved wife as the firstborn over the son of the unloved wife.
17 Ka ʻe fakahā ʻe ia ʻae tama ʻae fehiʻanekina ko e ʻuluaki tupu, ʻi heʻene ʻatu kiate ia ʻae vāhenga ʻe ua ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku ne maʻu, he ko e kamataʻanga ia ʻo hono mālohi; ʻoku ʻaʻana pe ʻae lelei ʻoe ʻuluaki tupu.
Instead, he must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of his unloved wife, by giving him a double portion of all that he has. For that son is the firstfruits of his father’s strength; the right of the firstborn belongs to him.
18 “Kapau ʻoku maʻu ʻe ha tangata ha foha ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai ʻaupito fai talangofua ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene tamai, pe ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene faʻē, pea ʻi heʻena tautea ia, ʻoku ʻikai tokanga ia kiate kinaua:
If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and does not listen to them when disciplined,
19 ‌ʻE toki puke ia ʻe heʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē, ʻo ʻomi ia kituʻa ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, pea ki he matapā ʻo honau potu;
his father and mother are to lay hold of him and bring him to the elders of his city, to the gate of his hometown,
20 Pea te na pehē ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, ‘Ko homa foha ko eni ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻoku ʻikai tui ia ki heʻema fekau: ko e ʻuakai ia mo e konā.’
and say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he does not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.”
21 Pea ʻe tolongaki ia ʻe he kau tangata kotoa pē ʻa hono kolo ʻaki ʻae maka, ke mate ai ia: ʻe pehē pe hoʻo motuhi ai ʻae kovi meiate kimoutolu; pea ʻe fanongo ki ai ʻe ʻIsileli kotoa pē, pea manavahē.
Then all the men of his city will stone him to death. So you must purge the evil from among you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.
22 “Pea kapau kuo fai angahala ʻe ha tangata ʻaia ʻoku totonu ke mate ai ia, pea kuo tonu ke tāmateʻi ia, pea ʻoku ke tautau ia ki he ʻakau:
If a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is executed, and you hang his body on a tree,
23 ‌ʻE ʻikai tuku hono sino ʻi he ʻakau ʻi he pō ʻo ʻaho, ka te ke tanu moʻoni ia ʻi he ʻaho ko ia: (he ko ia kuo tautau ko e malaʻia ia ʻi he ʻOtua; ) koeʻuhi ke ʻoua naʻa halaia ho fonua, ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua kiate koe ko ho tofiʻa.
you must not leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to bury him that day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
