1 Pea naʻa tau tafoki, ʻo hiki hotau fononga ki he toafa ʻi he hala ʻoe Tahi Kulokula, ʻo hangē ko e folofola ʻa Sihova kiate au: pea naʻa tau tākai ʻae moʻunga ko Seia ʻo ʻaho lahi.

And we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as Jehovah had said unto me; and we went round mount Seir many days.

2 “Pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kiate au, ʻo pehē,

And Jehovah spoke to me, saying,

3 Kuo mou tākai ʻae moʻunga ni ʻo fuoloa: mou tafoki ki he feituʻu tokelau.

Ye have gone round this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

4 Pea ke fekau ki he kakai, ʻo pehē, ‘Te mou ʻalu ʻi he potu fonua ʻo homou kāinga ko e fānau ʻa ʻIsoa, ʻaia ʻoku nofo ʻi Seia; pea ʻe manavahē ʻakinautolu kiate kimoutolu: ko ia, mou vakai lelei kiate kimoutolu.

And command the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; and ye shall be very guarded:

5 ‌ʻOua naʻa mou fai ha meʻa kiate kinautolu; koeʻuhi naʻa mo hano laulahi ʻoe ʻaofi vaʻe ʻe taha, ʻe ʻikai te u foaki kiate kimoutolu ha konga siʻi ʻo honau fonua: koeʻuhi kuo u foaki ʻae moʻunga ko Seia kia ʻIsoa ko e tofiʻa.

attack them not; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot-breadth; for I have given mount Seir as a possession unto Esau.

6 Te mou fakatau meʻakai meiate kinautolu ʻaki ʻae paʻanga, ke mou kai; pea te mou fakatau vai ʻiate kinautolu ʻaki ʻae paʻanga, ke mou inu.’

Ye shall buy of them food for money, that ye may eat; and water shall ye also buy of them for money, that ye may drink;

7 He ko Sihova ko ho ʻOtua kuo ne tāpuakiʻi koe ʻi he ngaahi ngāue kotoa pē ʻa ho nima: ʻoku ne ʻafioʻi ho ʻeveʻeva ʻi he toafa lahi ni: ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu ni naʻe ʻiate koe ʻa Sihova ko ho ʻOtua; naʻe ʻikai te ke masiva ʻi ha meʻa ʻe taha.

for Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand. He hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years hath Jehovah thy God been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

8 Pea ʻi heʻetau ʻalu ange mei hotau kāinga ko e fānau ʻa ʻIsoa, ʻaia naʻe nofo ʻi Seia, ʻi he hala ʻoe toafa mei ʻElati, pea mei ʻEsioni-kepa, naʻa tau tafoki ʻo ʻalu ofi ki he hala ʻoe toafa ʻo Moape,

And we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the plain, by Elath, and by Ezion-geber, and we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

9 Pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kiate au, ‘ʻOua naʻa fakamamahi ki he kau Moape, pea ʻoua naʻa tauʻi ʻakinautolu koeʻuhi ʻe ʻikai te u foaki kiate koe honau fonua ko e tofiʻa; he kuo u foaki ʻa ʻAla ki he fānau ʻa Lote ko honau tofiʻa.’

And Jehovah said to me, Distress not the Moabites, neither engage with them in battle; for I will not give thee of their land a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given Ar as a possession.

10 Naʻe nofo ʻi ai ʻi muʻa ʻae kau Imime, ko e kakai lalahi, mo tokolahi mo lōloa, ʻo hangē ko e kau ʻAnaki;

(The Emim dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim.

11 ‌ʻAkinautolu naʻe ui foki ko e kau sino lalahi, hangē ko e kau ʻAnaki ka naʻe ui ʻakinautolu ʻe he kau Moape ko e kau Imime.

They also are reckoned as giants like the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

12 Naʻe nofo ʻae kakai Hoa ʻi Seia foki ʻi muʻa; ka naʻe fetongi ʻakinautolu ʻe he fānau ʻa ʻIsoa, hili ʻenau fakaʻauha ʻakinautolu mei honau ʻao, pea nau nofo ʻi honau fonua; ʻo hangē ko ia kuo fai ʻe ʻIsileli ki he fonua ʻo hono tofiʻa, ʻaia naʻe foaki ʻe Sihova kiate kinautolu.

And in Seir dwelt the Horites in times past; and the children of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did to the land of their possession, which Jehovah gave to them.)

13 Pea ne u pehē, Mou tuʻu hake, ʻo ʻalu ki he kauvai ʻe taha ʻo Seleti. Pea naʻa tau ʻalu ki he kauvai ʻe taha ʻo Seleti:

Now rise up, and pass over the torrent Zered. And we passed over the torrent Zered.

14 Pea ko hono fuoloa ʻo ʻetau haʻu mei Ketesi-pania, ʻo aʻu ki heʻetau hoko ki he kauvai ʻo Seleti, ko e taʻu ʻe tolungofulu ma valu: ke ʻoua ke ʻosiʻosingamālie mei he fakataha ʻae toʻutangata kotoa pē ʻoe kau tangata tau, ʻo hangē ko e fuakava ʻa Sihova kiate kinautolu.

Now the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we had come over the torrent Zered, were thirty-eight years; until the whole generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah had sworn unto them.

15 He ko e moʻoni naʻe mafao ʻae nima ʻo Sihova kiate kinautolu, ke fakaʻauha ʻakinautolu mei he kakai, kaeʻoua kenau ʻosi.

Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

16 Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi heʻene mole ʻo pekia ʻae kau tangata tau kotoa pē mei he kakai,

And it came to pass when all the men of war were consumed, having died off from among the people,

17 Naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kiate au, ʻo pehē,

that Jehovah spoke to me, saying,

18 ‘Te ke ʻalu atu he ʻaho ni ʻi he potu ʻo ʻAla, ʻi he mata fonua ʻo Moape:

Thou art to pass this day over the border of Moab, [which is] Ar,

19 Pea ʻoka ke ka hoko ʻo ofi ʻo hangatonu ki he fānau ʻa ʻAmoni, ʻoua naʻa fakamamahiʻi ʻakinautolu, pea ʻoua naʻa fai ha meʻa kiate kinautolu: koeʻuhi ʻe ʻikai te u foaki kiate koe ha tofiʻa ʻi he fonua ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻAmoni; he kuo tuku ia ki he fānau ʻa Lote ko honau tofiʻa.’

and come near over against the children of Ammon; thou shalt not distress them nor attack them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given it as a possession.

20 (Naʻe ui ia foki ko e fonua ʻoe ngaahi kakai lalahi naʻe nofo ai ʻi muʻa ʻae kakai lalahi pea naʻe ui ʻakinautolu ʻe he kau ʻAmoni, ko e kau Samisunuma;

(That also is reckoned a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in time past, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim;

21 Ko e kakai lalahi, mo tokolahi, mo lōloa, ʻo hangē ko e kau ʻAnaki: ka naʻe fakaʻauha ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ʻi honau ʻao; pea naʻa nau tongia ʻakinautolu ʻo nofo ʻi honau fonua:

a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim; and Jehovah destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead;

22 Hangē ko ia naʻa ne fai ki he fānau ʻa ʻIsoa, ʻaia naʻe nofo ʻi Seia, ʻi heʻene fakaʻauha ʻae kakai Hoa mei honau ʻao; pea naʻa nau tongia ʻakinautolu, pea nofo ʻi honau fonua ʻo aʻu ki he ʻaho ni:

as he did to the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Horites; and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead, even to this day.

23 Pea ko e kakai ʻAvi naʻe nofo ʻi Heselimi, ʻo aʻu ki Kesa, ko e kau Kafitoli ni, ʻaia naʻe haʻu mei Kafitoli, naʻe fakaʻauha ʻakinautolu, ʻo nofo ʻi honau fonua.)

And the Avvites who dwelt in the hamlets as far as Gazah — the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 “Mou tuʻu hake, ʻo fai homou fononga, pea aʻa ʻi he vaitafe ko ʻAlanoni: vakai, kuo u tuku ki ho nima ʻa Sihoni ko e ʻAmoli, ko e tuʻi ʻo Hesiponi, mo hono fonua: mou fai ʻae kamata maʻu leva ia, pea ketau mo ia.

Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon. Behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land: begin, take possession, and engage with him in battle.

25 Te u kamata fai he ʻaho ni ke ʻai ʻae manavahē kiate koe ki he ngaahi puleʻanga kotoa pē ʻoku ʻi he lalo langi kotoa pē, ʻaia tenau ongoʻi ho ongoongo, pea tetetete, pea tenau feinga ʻi he mamahi koeʻuhi ko koe.

This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples under the whole heaven; who will hear report of thee, and will tremble, and quake because of thee.

26 “Pea ne u fekau ʻae kau tangata fekau mei he toafa ʻo Ketimote, kia Sihoni ko e tuʻi ʻo Hesiponi mo e ngaahi lea ʻoe melino, ʻo pehē,

And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon the king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

27 ‘Tuku ke u ʻalu atu ʻi ho fonua: Te u ʻalu atu pe ʻi he hala motuʻa, ʻe ʻikai te u tafoki ki he nima toʻomataʻu pe ki he toʻohema.

Let me pass through thy land: by the highway alone will I go; I will neither turn to the right hand nor to the left.

28 Pea te ke fakatau ʻae meʻakai kiate au ʻaki ʻae paʻanga, koeʻuhi ke u kai; pea tuku mai ha vai ʻi heʻeku paʻanga ke u inu: kae kehe ke u ʻalu ʻi ho fonua ʻi hoku vaʻe pe:

Thou shalt sell me food for money that I may eat; and thou shalt give me water for money that I may drink; I will only pass through on my feet,

29 (Hangē ko ia naʻe fai kiate au ʻe he fānau ʻa ʻIsoa naʻe nofo ʻi Seia, mo e kau Moape naʻe nofo ʻi ʻAla; ) ke ʻoua ke u aʻa atu ʻi Sioatani ki he fonua ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko homau ʻOtua kiate kimautolu.’

— as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, — until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us.

30 “Ka naʻe ʻikai tuku ʻakitautolu ʻe Sihoni ko e tuʻi ʻo Hesiponi, ketau ʻalu ofi kiate ia; he naʻe fakafefeka hono laumālie ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua, ʻo ngaohi hono loto ke talangataʻa, koeʻuhi ke ne tukuange ia ki ho nima, ʻo hangē ko ia kuo hā he ʻaho ni.

But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obdurate, that he might give him into thy hand, as it is this day.

31 “Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Sihova kiate au, ‘Vakai, kuo u kamata tuku ʻa Sihoni mo hono fonua ʻi ho ʻao: ke ke kamata maʻu, koeʻuhi ke ke hoko ʻo maʻu hono fonua.’

And Jehovah said to me, Behold, I begin to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin, take possession, that thou mayest possess his land.

32 Pea naʻe toki haʻu kituʻa ʻa Sihoni ʻo tuʻu kiate kitautolu, ʻaia mo hono kakai kotoa pē, ketau ʻi Sehasi.

And Sihon came out against us for battle, he and all his people, to Jahaz.

33 Pea naʻe tuku mai ia ʻi hotau ʻao ʻe Sihova, ko hotau ʻOtua; pea naʻa tau taaʻi ia, mo hono ngaahi foha, mo ʻene kakai kotoa pē.

But Jehovah our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and his whole people.

34 Pea naʻa tau maʻu ʻene ngaahi kolo ʻi he kuonga ko ia, pea naʻa tau fakaʻauha ʻae kau tangata kotoa pē, mo e kau fefine, pea mo e fānau iiki ʻi he kolo kotoa pē; naʻe ʻikai te tau tuku ha niʻihi ke toe:

And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, men, and women, and little ones: we let none escape.

35 Ka ko e ngaahi fanga manu naʻa tau maʻu ko e koloa maʻatautolu, mo e vete ʻoe ngaahi kolo ʻaia naʻa tau maʻu.

Only the cattle we took as booty for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 Mei ʻAloeli ʻaia ʻoku ʻi he veʻe vaitafe ʻo ʻAlanoni, pea mei he kolo ʻaia ʻoku ofi ki he vaitafe, ʻo aʻu ki Kiliati, naʻe ʻikai ha kolo ʻe taha naʻe mālohi kiate kitautolu: ko Sihova ko hotau ʻOtua naʻa ne tuku mai kotoa pē kiate kitautolu:

From Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the ravine even to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: Jehovah our God delivered all before us.

37 Ka naʻe ʻikai te ke hoko ki he fonua ʻoe fānau ʻa ʻAmoni, pe ki ha potu ʻe taha ʻoe vaitafe ko Sakopi, pe ki he ngaahi kolo ʻi he ngaahi moʻunga, pe ki ha potu ʻe taha naʻe taʻofi ʻakitautolu mei ai ʻe Sihova ko hotau ʻOtua.

Only thou didst not approach the land of the children of Ammon, the whole border of the river Jabbok, nor the cities of the mountain, nor to whatsoever Jehovah our God had forbidden us.
