< 1 Samuela 8 >
And it came to pass when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Pea ko hono hingoa ʻoe ʻuluaki foha ko Sioeli pea ko e hingoa ʻo hono tokoua, ko ʻApia pea ko e ongo fakamaau ʻakinaua ʻi Peasipa.
And these [are] the names of his sons; Joel the first-born, and the name of the second Abia, judges in Bersabee.
And his sons did not walk in his way; and they turned aside after gain, and took gifts, and perverted judgments.
And the men of Israel gather themselves together, and come to Armathaim to Samuel,
5 ʻO nau pehē kiate ia, “Vakai kuo ke motuʻa, pea ʻoku ʻikai ʻalu ʻa ho ongo foha ʻi ho ngaahi hala: pea ko eni fakanofo ha tuʻi moʻomautolu ke ne fakamaauʻi ʻakimautolu ʻo hangē ko e ngaahi puleʻanga kotoa pē.”
and they said to him, Behold, thou art grown old, and thy sons walk not in thy way; and now set over us a king to judge us, as also the other nations [have].
6 Ka naʻe kovi lahi kia Samuela ʻa ʻenau pehē, “Tuku kiate kimautolu ha tuʻi ke ne fakamaauʻi ʻakimautolu.” Pea naʻe lotu ʻe Samuela kia Sihova.
And the thing [was] evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the Lord.
7 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Sihova kia Samuela, “Tokanga ki he leʻo ʻoe kakai ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku nau tala kiate koe: he ʻoku teʻeki ai tenau siʻaki koe, ka kuo nau siʻaki au, ke ʻoua naʻaku pule kiate kinautolu.
And the Lord said to Samuel, Hear the voice of the people, in whatever they shall say to thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me from reigning over them.
8 Hangē ko e ngaahi ngāue ʻaia kuo nau fai talu ʻae ʻaho ʻaia ne u ʻomi ai kinautolu mei ʻIsipite, ʻio, ʻo aʻu ki he ʻaho ni, ʻaia kuo nau liʻaki au, pea tauhi ʻae ngaahi ʻotua kehe; ʻoku pehē ʻenau fai kiate koe.
According to all their doings which they have done to me, from the day that I brought them out of Egypt until this day, even [as] they have deserted me, and served other gods, so they do also to thee.
9 Pea ko eni, tokanga ki honau leʻo; ka ke valoki mamafa kiate kinautolu, pea fakahā kiate kinautolu hono anga ʻoe tuʻi, ʻaia ʻe pule kiate kinautolu.”
And now hearken to their voice; only thou shalt solemnly testify to them, and thou shalt describe to them the manner of the king who shall reign over them.
10 Pea naʻe fakahā ʻe Samuela ʻae ngaahi folofola kotoa pē ʻa Sihova ki he kakai naʻe tala tuʻi kiate ia.
And Samuel spoke every word of the Lord to the people who asked of him a king.
11 Pea pehē ʻe ia, “Ko hono anga eni ʻoe tuʻi, ʻaia ʻe pule kiate kimoutolu: Te ne toʻo homou ngaahi foha pea vaheʻi ʻakinautolu moʻona, ki heʻene ngaahi saliote, pea ke hoko ko ʻene kau heka hoosi; pea ke lele muʻomuʻa ʻi hono ngaahi saliote.
And he said, This shall be the manner of the king that shall rule over you: he shall take your sons, and put them in his chariots, and among his horsemen, and running before his chariots,
12 Pea ʻe fakanofo ʻe ia moʻona ʻae ngaahi ʻeiki pule ki he ngaahi toko afe, mo e ʻeiki pule ki he ngaahi toko nimangofulu; pea te ne fakafatongia kinautolu ke keli ʻene ngoue, pea ke tuʻusi ʻene taʻu, pea kenau ngaohi ʻene mahafutau, mo e ngaahi meʻa ki hono ngaahi saliote.
and [his manner shall be] to make them to himself captains of hundreds and captains of thousands; and to reap his harvest, and gather his vintage, and prepare his instruments of war, and the implements of his chariots.
13 Pea te ne pule ke hoko ʻa homou ngaahi ʻofefine, ko e kau ngaohi mā melie, ko e kau teu kai, mo e kau taʻo mā.
And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and cooks, and bakers.
14 Pea ʻe maʻu ʻe ia hoʻomou ngaahi ngoue, mo hoʻomou ngoue vaine, mo e ngoue ʻolive, ʻio, ʻaia ʻoku lelei lahi, pea ʻe foaki ia ki heʻene kau tamaioʻeiki.
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your good oliveyards, and give them to his servants.
15 Pea te ne toʻo hono hongofulu ʻo hono vahe ʻi hoʻomou tengaʻi ʻakau, pea mo hoʻomou ngoue vaine, pea foaki ki heʻene kau matāpule mo ʻene kau tamaioʻeiki.
And he will take the tithe of your seeds and your vineyards, and give [it] to his eunuchs, and to his servants.
And he will take your servants, and your handmaids, and your good herds and your asses, and will take the tenth of them for his works.
17 ʻE toʻo ʻe ia ʻo ʻave hono hongofulu ʻoe vahe ʻo hoʻomou fanga sipi: pea te mou hoko ko ʻene kau tamaioʻeiki.
And he will tithe your flocks; and ye shall be his servants.
18 Pea te mou tangi kalanga ʻi he ʻaho ko ia, ko e meʻa ʻi he tuʻi ʻaia kuo mou fili moʻomoutolu; pea ʻe ʻikai ongoʻi ʻakimoutolu ʻe Sihova ʻi he ʻaho ko ia.”
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye have chosen to yourselves, and the Lord shall not hear you in those days, because ye have chosen to yourselves a king.
19 Ka naʻe ʻikai tui ʻae kakai ki he leʻo ʻo Samuela, pea naʻa nau pehē, “ʻIkai, ka te mau maʻu ha tuʻi, ke pule kiate kimautolu;
But the people would not hearken to Samuel; and they said to him, Nay, but there shall be a king over us.
20 koeʻuhi ke mau tatau foki mo e ngaahi puleʻanga; pea ke fakamaaua kimautolu ʻe homau tuʻi, pea ke ʻalu muʻomuʻa ia ʻiate kimautolu, ke fai ʻemau ngaahi tau.”
An we also will be like all the nations; and our king shall judge us, and shall go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 Pea naʻe fanongo ʻe Samuela ki he ngaahi lea kotoa pē ʻae kakai, pea ne lea ʻaki ia ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and spoke them in the ears of the Lord.
And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken to their voice, and appoint them a king. And Samuel said to the men of Israel, Let each man depart to his city.
