< 1 Samuela 4 >

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 Pea naʻe hiki ʻae tau ʻae kau Filisitia ke tau ki ʻIsileli: pea ʻi he fakahoko ʻae tau, naʻe teʻia leva ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kau Filisitia: pea naʻa nau taaʻi ʻi he tau ʻi he ngoue ʻae kau tangata ʻe toko fā afe nai.
And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 Pea ʻi he hoko mai ʻae kakai ki he ʻapitanga, naʻe pehē ʻe he kau mātuʻa ʻo ʻIsileli, “Ko e hā kuo teʻia ai ʻe Sihova kitautolu he ʻaho ni ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kau Filisitia? Ke tau ʻomi kiate kitautolu ʻae puha ʻoe fuakava ʻo Sihova mei Sailo, koeʻuhi, ʻi heʻene hoko kiate kitautolu, ke ne fakamoʻui ʻakitautolu mei he nima ʻo hotau ngaahi fili.”
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let as fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.
So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which sitteth upon the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 Pea ʻi he hoko ʻae puha ʻoe fuakava ʻo Sihova ki he ʻapitanga, naʻe mavava ʻa ʻIsileli kotoa pē ʻi he mavava lahi, ko ia naʻe ʻuʻulu ai ʻae fonua.
And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻae kakai Filisitia ki he longoaʻa ʻoe mavava, naʻa nau pehē, “Ko e hā hono ʻuhinga ʻoe fuʻu mavava lahi ni ʻi he ʻapitanga ʻoe kakai Hepelū? Pea naʻa nau ʻilo kuo hoko ʻae puha tapu ʻo Sihova ki he ʻapitanga.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
7 Pea naʻe manavahē ai ʻae kakai Filisitia, he naʻa nau pehē, Kuo hāʻele mai ʻae ʻOtua ki he ʻapitanga. Pea naʻa nau pehē, Malaʻia kiate kitautolu! He kuo ʻikai ha meʻa pehē talu mei muʻa.
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 Malaʻia kiate kitautolu! Ko e ngaahi ʻOtua eni naʻe taaʻi ʻae kakai ʻIsipite ʻi he ngaahi meʻa mamahi lahi ʻi he toafa.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.
Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 Pea naʻe tau ʻae kau Filisitia, pea naʻe toe teʻia ʻa ʻIsileli, pea naʻa nau hola ʻae tangata taki taha ki hono fale fehikitaki: pea naʻe mate ai ʻae tokolahi ʻaupito he naʻe tō ai ʻae toko tolu mano ʻoe kau tangata ʻIsileli naʻe ʻalu ʻi lalo.
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 Pea naʻe moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua; pea naʻe tāmateʻi ʻae ongo foha ʻo Ilai ko Hofini mo Finiasi.
And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 Pea naʻe lele ʻae tangata Penisimani mei he tau, ʻo hoko ki Sailo ʻi he ʻaho ko ia, kuo mahaehae hono kofu, pea pani kelekele hono ʻulu.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 Pea ʻi heʻene hoko ki ai vakai naʻe nofo leʻo pe ʻa Ilai ʻi he nofoʻa ʻi he veʻehala: he naʻe tetetete hono loto telia ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua. Pea ʻi he hoko ʻae tangata ki he kolo, ʻo fakahā ia, naʻe tangi kalanga ʻae kolo kotoa pē.
And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon his seat by the way side watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 Pea ʻi heʻene ongoʻi ʻe Ilai ʻae leʻo ʻoe tangi, naʻe pehē ʻe ia, “Ko e hā hono ʻuhinga ʻoe maveuveu ni?” Pea naʻe haʻu fakatoʻotoʻo ʻae tangata ʻo tala kia Ilai.
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man hasted and came and told Eli.
15 Pea naʻe hivangofulu taʻu mo e taʻu ʻe valu ʻae motuʻa ʻo Ilai; pea kuo poʻuli hono mata, naʻe ʻikai faʻa mamata.
Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.
16 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe he tangata kia Ilai, “Ko au ia kuo u haʻu mei he tau, pea u hola mei he tau he ʻaho ni. Pea pehē ʻe ia, “ʻE hoku foha, Ko e hā kuo fai?”
And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army. And he said, How went the matter, my son?
17 Pea talaange ʻe he tangata fekau, “Kuo hola ʻa ʻIsileli mei he ʻao ʻoe kakai Filisitia, pea kuo tō ʻae tokolahi ʻi he kakai, pea kuo mate ʻa ho ongo foha ko Hofini mo Finiasi, pea kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua.”
And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 Pea ʻi heʻene lea ki he puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, naʻe tō fakaholomui ia mei he nofoʻa ʻi he potu ʻoe matapā, pea mafesi ai hono kia, pea pekia ai: he ko e tangata motuʻa ia pea mamafa. Pea naʻe fakamaauʻi ʻe ia ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 Pea naʻe feitama hono ʻofefine ʻi he fono, ko e uaifi ʻo Finiasi, kuo kakato hono māhina ke fāʻele: pea ʻi heʻene ongoʻi ʻae ongoongo kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, pea kuo pekia ʻa ʻene tamai ʻi he fono, mo hono husepāniti, naʻe punou hifo ʻe ia ia pea langā; he naʻe hoko leva ʻae langā kiate ia.
And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came upon her.
20 Pea feʻunga mo ʻene pekia, naʻe pehē kiate ia ʻe he kau fefine naʻe tuʻu ofi kiate ia, ʻoua naʻa ke manavahē; he kuo ke fāʻeleʻi ʻae tama. Ka naʻe ʻikai te ne lea, pea naʻe ʻikai te ne tokanga ki ai.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 Pea naʻa ne ui ʻae tama ko Ikapote, ko e pehē, Kuo mole ʻae nāunau mei ʻIsileli: koeʻuhi kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, pea koeʻuhi kuo pekia ʻene tamai ʻi he fono mo hono uaifi.
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe ia, Kuo mole ʻae nāunau mei ʻIsileli: he kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.
