1 Pea ko eni, naʻe tauʻi ʻa ʻIsileli ʻe he kakai Filisitia: pea naʻe hola ʻae kau tangata ʻIsileli mei he ʻao ʻoe kakai Filisitia, pea naʻe tō ʻo mate [ʻakinautolu ]ʻi he moʻunga ko Kilipoa.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and there fell down [many] slain on mount Gilboa'.
2 Pea naʻe tuli mālohi ʻe he kakai Filisitia, ʻa Saula mo hono ngaahi foha: pea naʻe teʻia ʻa Sonatane ʻe he kakai Filisitia, mo ʻApinatapi, mo Malikisua, ko e ngaahi foha ʻo Saula.
And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malkishua', the sons of Saul.
3 Pea naʻe hoko mālohi ʻae tau kia Saula, pea naʻe touʻia ia ʻi he kau tangata fakakaufana; pea kafo mamahi ia ʻi he kau tangata fakakaufana.
And the battle was heavy against Saul, and he was found by the archers, the men with bows; and he was greatly in dread of the archers.
4 Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Saula ki hono hoa tau, “Unuhi hake hoʻo heletā, ʻo tui ʻaki au ke ʻasi; telia naʻa haʻu ʻae kakai taʻekamu ni, ʻo tui ʻaki au, pea manukiʻi au.” Ka naʻe ʻikai fiefai ia ʻe hono hoa tau; he naʻe manavahē lahi ia. Ko ia naʻe toʻo ai ʻe Saula ʻae heletā, pea ne fakahinga ia ki ai.
And Saul said unto his armor-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and wantonly ill-use me. But his armor-bearer would not; for he was greatly afraid; wherefore Saul took the sword, and fell upon it.
5 Pea ʻi he mamata ʻe hono hoa tau kuo mate ʻa Saula, naʻe fakahinga foki ia ki heʻene heletā, pea mate fakataha mo ia.
And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, then fell he likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
6 Ko ia naʻe mate ai ʻa Saula mo hono foha ʻe toko tolu, mo hono hoa tau, mo hono kau tangata kotoa pē fakataha ʻi he ʻaho pe ko ia.
Thus died Saul, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, also all his men, on that same day together.
7 Pea ʻi he mamata ʻae kau tangata ʻIsileli ʻaia naʻe ʻi he potu ʻe taha ʻoe teleʻa, mo kinautolu naʻe ʻi he potu ʻe taha ʻo Sioatani, kuo hola ʻae kau tangata ʻIsileli, pea kuo pekia ʻa Saula mo hono ngaahi foha, naʻa nau liʻaki ʻenau ngaahi kolo nofoʻanga, pea hola; pea naʻe haʻu ʻae kakai Filisitia ʻo nofo ki ai.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and those that were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled, and that Saul and his sons had died: they forsook the cities, and fled away; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 Pea pongipongi hake naʻe pehē, ʻi he haʻu ʻae kau Filisitia ke vete ʻae kakai mate, naʻa nau ʻilo ʻa Saula mo hono foha ʻe toko tolu kuo tō ʻi he moʻunga ko Kilipoa.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the Philistines came to strip the slain; and they found Saul and his three sons fallen on mount Gilboa'.
9 Pea naʻa nau tutuʻu hono ʻulu, pea toʻo ʻene mahafutau, pea fekau ki he fonua ʻoe kakai Filisitia ʻo takatakai, ke fakaongo ia ʻi he fale ʻo honau ngaahi tamapua, pea ki honau kakai.
And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent it into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
10 Pea naʻa nau ʻai hono ngaahi kofu tau ki he fale ʻo ʻAsitelote: pea naʻa nau fakamaʻu hono sino ki he ʻā maka ʻo Pete-Sani.
And they put his armor in the house of 'Ashtaroth; and his body they fastened to the wall of Beth-shan.
11 Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻae kakai Sepesi-Kiliati ki he meʻa kuo fai ʻe he kakai Filisitia kia Saula;
And when the inhabitants of Yabeshgil'ad heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul:
12 Naʻe tuʻu hake ʻae kau tangata toʻa kotoa pē, pea fononga ʻi he pō kotoa ko ia, ʻonau toʻo ʻae sino ʻo Saula mo e sino ʻo hono ngaahi foha mei he ʻā maka ʻo Pete-Sani pea naʻa nau ʻomi ia ki Sepesi ʻo tutu ia ʻi ai.
Then arose all the valiant men, and walked all the night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Yabesh, and burnt them there.
13 Pea naʻa nau toʻo honau ngaahi hui, pea tanu ia ʻi he lolo ʻakau ʻi Sepesi, pea naʻa nau ʻaukai ʻi he ʻaho ʻe fitu.
And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk-tree at Yabesh, and they fasted seven days.
