1 Och medan Israel uppehöll sig i Sittim, begynte folket bedriva otukt med Moabs döttrar.
Forsothe in that tyme Israel dwellide in Sechym; and the puple dide fornycacioun with the douytris of Moab;
2 Dessa inbjödo folket till sina gudars offermåltider,
whiche douytris clepiden hem to her sacrifices, and thei eten, and worschipiden the goddis of tho douytris;
3 Och folket åt och tillbad deras gudar. Och Israel slöt sig till Baal-Peor. Då upptändes HERRENS vrede mot Israel.
and Israel made sacrifice to Belphegor. And the Lord was wrooth,
4 Och HERREN sade till Mose: "Hämta folkets alla huvudman, och låt upphänga sådana i solen för HERREN, på det att HERRENS vredes glöd må vändas ifrån Israel."
and seide to Moises, Take thou alle the princes of the puple, and hange hem ayens the sunne in iebatis, that my wodnesse, `that is stronge veniaunce, be turned awai fro Israel.
5 Då sade Mose till Israels domare: "Var och en av eder dräpe bland sina män dem som hava slutit sig till Baal-Peor."

8 och följde efter den israelitiske mannen in i tältets sovrum och genomborrade dem båda, såväl den israelitiske mannen som ock kvinnan, i det att han stack henne genom underlivet. Så upphörde hemsökelsen bland Israels barn.

9 Men de som hade omkommit genom hemsökelsen utgjorde tjugufyra tusen.
and foure and twenti thousand of men weren slayn.
10 Och HERREN talade till Mose och sade:
And the Lord seide to Moises,
11 "Pinehas, han som är son till prästen Arons son Eleasar, har avvänt min vrede från Israels barn, i det att han har nitälskat bland dem såsom jag nitälskar; därför har jag icke i min nitälskan förgjort Israels barn.
Fynees, the sone of Eleazar, sone of Aaron, preest, turnede away myn yre fro the sones of Israel; for he was stirid ayens hem bi my feruent loue, that Y my silf schulde not do awai the sones of Israel in my greet hete, `ether strong veniaunce.
12 Säg fördenskull: Se, jag gör med honom ett fridsförbund;
Therfor speke thou to hym, Lo! Y yyue to hym the pees of my couenaunt,
13 och för honom, och för hans avkomlingar efter honom, skall detta vara ett förbund genom vilket han får ett evärdligt prästadöme, till lön för att han nitälskade för sin Gud och bragte försoning för Israels barn."
and it schal be an euerlastynge couenaunt of preesthod, as wel to hym silf as to his seed; for he louyde feruentli for his God, and he clenside the greet trespas of the sones of Israel.
14 Och den dödade israelitiske mannen, han som dödades jämte den midjanitiska kvinnan, hette Simri, Salus son, och var hövding för en familj bland simeoniterna.

15 Och den dödade midjanitiska kvinnan hette Kosbi, dotter till Sur; denne var stamhövding, hövding för en stamfamilj i Midjan.

16 Och HERREN talade till Mose och sade:
And the Lord spak to Moises and seide,
17 "Angripen midjaniterna och slån dem.
`Madianytis feele you enemyes, and smyte ye hem;
18 Ty de hava angripit eder genom de onda råd som de lade mot eder i saken med Peor och i saken med Kosbi, den midjanitiska hövdingdottern, deras syster, vilken dödades på den dag då hemsökelsen drabbade eder för Peors skull."
