4 Mosebok 17

1 Och HERREN talade till Mose och sade:

Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,

2 "Tala till Israels barn, och tag av dem, av alla som bland dem äro hövdingar för stamfamiljer, en stav för var stamfamilj, tillsammans tolv stavar. Vars och ens namn skall du skriva på hans stav.

“Tell the Israeli people to bring to you twelve walking sticks. They should bring one from each of the leaders of the twelve tribes. You should carve each leader’s name on his stick.

3 Och Arons namn skall du skriva på Levi stav; ty huvudmannen för denna stams familjer skall hava sin särskilda stav.

There must be one stick for the leader of each tribe, so you must carve Aaron’s name on the stick for the tribe of Levi.

4 Sedan skall du lägga in dem i uppenbarelsetältet framför vittnesbördet, där jag uppenbarar mig för eder.

Put those sticks inside the Sacred Tent, in front of the sacred chest that has in it the tablets on which the Ten Commandments are written. That is the place where I always talk with you.

5 Då skall ske att den man som jag utväljer, hans stav skall grönska. Och så skall jag göra slut på Israels barns knorrande, så att jag slipper höra huru de knorra mot eder."

Buds will sprout on the stick of the man whom I have chosen [to be the priest]. [When the people see that], they will stop their constantly complaining about you [because they will realize that you are the one whom I have chosen].”

6 Och Mose talade till Israels barn, och hövdingarna för deras stamfamiljer gåvo honom alla var och en sin stav, tillsammans tolv stavar; och Arons stav var med bland deras stavar.

So Moses/I told the people what Yahweh had said. Then each of the twelve Israeli leaders, including Aaron, brought his walking stick to Moses/me.

7 Och Mose lade stavarna inför HERRENS ansikte i vittnesbördets tält.

Moses/I placed the sticks inside the Sacred Tent in front of the sacred chest.

8 När nu Mose dagen därefter gick in i vittnesbördets tält, se, då grönskade Arons stav, som var där för Levi hus, den hade knoppar och utslagna blommor och mogna mandlar.

The following morning, when he/I went into the tent, he/I saw that Aaron’s stick, which represented the tribe of Levi, had sprouted, it had produced leaves and blossoms, and it had also produced almonds that were ripe!

9 Och Mose bar alla stavarna ut från HERRENS ansikte till alla Israels barn; och de sågo på dem och togo var och en sin stav.

Moses/I brought all the sticks out of the Sacred Tent and showed them to the people. Each of the twelve leaders took back his own stick.

10 Och HERREN sade till Mose: "Lägg Arons stav tillbaka framför vittnesbördet, för att den där må förvaras såsom ett tecken för de gensträviga; så skall du göra en ände på deras knorrande, så att jag slipper höra det, på det att de icke må dö."

Then Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Put Aaron’s stick in front of the sacred chest, and let it stay there permanently. That will be a warning to people who want to rebel [against me]. Then no more people will die [because of complaining against me].”

11 Och Mose gjorde så; såsom HERREN hade bjudit honom, så gjorde han.

So Moses/I did what Yahweh had commanded.

12 Och Israels barn ropade till Mose: "Se, vi omkomma, vi förgås, vi förgås allasammans!

Then the Israeli people said to Moses/me, “We are going to die! All of us are surely going to die!

13 Var och en som kommer därvid, som kommer vid HERRENS tabernakel, han dör. Skola vi då verkligen alla omkomma?"

Everyone who comes close to Yahweh’s Sacred Tent dies. Are the rest of us going to die, also?” [RHQ]
