Esra 4
1 Men när ovännerna till Juda och Benjamin fingo höra att de som hade återkommit ifrån fångenskapen höllo på att bygga ett tempel åt HERREN, Israels Gud,
Bvt the aduersaries of Iudah and Beniamin heard, that the children of the captiuitie builded the Temple vnto the Lord God of Israel.
2 gingo de till Serubbabel och till huvudmännen för familjerna och sade till dem: "Vi vilja bygga tillsammans med eder, ty vi söka eder Gud, likasom I, och åt honom offra vi alltsedan den tid då den assyriske konungen Esarhaddon lät föra oss hit."
And they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chiefe fathers, and sayd vnto them, We wil builde with you: for we seeke the Lord your God as ye do, and we haue sacrificed vnto him since the time of Esar Haddon king of Asshur, which brought vs vp hither.
3 Men Serubbabel och Jesua och de övriga huvudmännen för Israels familjer sade till dem: "Det är icke tillbörligt att I tillsammans med oss byggen ett hus åt vår Gud, utan vi vilja för oss själva med varandra bygga huset åt HERREN, Israels Gud, såsom konung Kores, konungen i Persien, har bjudit oss."
Then Zerubbabel, and Ieshua, and the rest of the chiefe fathers of Israel, sayde vnto them, It is not for you, but for vs to buyld the house vnto our God: for we our selues together wil buylde it vnto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded vs.
4 Men folket i landet bedrev det så, att judafolkets mod föll och de avskräcktes från att bygga vidare.
Wherefore the people of the land discouraged the people of Iudah, and troubled them in buylding,
5 Och de lejde mot dem män som genom sina råd gjorde deras rådslag om intet, så länge Kores, konungen i Persien, levde, och sedan ända till dess att Darejaves, konungen i Persien, kom till regeringen.
And they hired counsellers against them, to hinder their deuise, all the dayes of Cyrus King of Persia, euen vntill the reigne of Darius King of Persia.
6 (Sedermera, under Ahasveros' regering, redan i begynnelsen av hans regering, skrev man en anklagelseskrift mot dem som bodde i Juda och Jerusalem.
And in the reigne of Ahashuerosh (in the beginning of his reigne) wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Iudah and Ierusalem.
7 Och i Artasastas tid skrevo Bislam, Mitredat och Tabeel samt dennes övriga medbröder till Artasasta, konungen i Persien. Och det som stod i skrivelsen var skrivet med arameiska bokstäver och avfattat på arameiska.
And in the daies of Artahshashte, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions wrote when it was peace, vnto Artahshashte king of Persia, and the writing of the letter was the Aramites writing, and the thing declared was in the language of the Aramites.
8 Likaledes skrevo rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai ett brev om Jerusalem till konung Artasasta av följande innehåll.
Rehum the chancelour, and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Ierusalem to Artahshashte the King, in this sort.
9 De skrevo då, rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och de andra, deras medbröder: diniterna och afaresatkiterna, tarpeliterna, afaresiterna, arkeviterna, babylonierna, susaniterna, dehaviterna, elamiterna
Then wrote Rehum the chauncelour, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions Dinaie, and Apharsathcaie, Tarpelaie, Apharsaie, Archeuaie, Bablaie, Shushanchaie, Dehaue, Elmaie,
10 och de andra folk som den store och mäktige Asenappar hade fört bort och låtit bosätta sig i staden Samaria och annorstädes i landet på andra sidan floden o. s. v.
And the rest of the people whom the great and noble Asnappar brought ouer, and set in the cities of Samaria, and other that are beyonde the Riuer and Cheeneth.
11 Och detta är vad som stod skrivet i det brev som de sände till konung Artasasta: "Dina tjänare, männen på andra sidan floden o. s. v.
This is the copie of the letter that they sent vnto King Artahshashte, THY SERVANTS the men beyond the Riuer and Cheeneth, salute thee.
12 Det vare veterligt för konungen att de judar som drogo upp från dig hava kommit hit till oss i Jerusalem, och de hålla nu på att bygga upp den upproriska och onda staden, att sätta murarna i stånd och att förbättra grundvalarna.
Be it knowen vnto the King that ye Iewes, which came vp from thee to vs, are come vnto Ierusalem (a citie rebellious and wicked) and buylde, and lay the foundations of the walles, and haue ioyned the foundations.
13 Så må nu konungen veta, att om denna stad bliver uppbyggd och murarna bliva satta i stånd, skola de varken giva skatt eller tull eller vägpenningar, och sådant skall bliva till men för konungarnas inkomster.
Be it knowen nowe vnto the King, that if this citie be built, and the foundations of the walles layed, they will not giue tolle, tribute, nor custome: so shalt thou hinder the Kings tribute.
14 Alldenstund vi nu äta palatsets salt, och det icke är tillbörligt att vi åse huru skada tillskyndas konungen, därför sända vi nu och låta konungen veta detta,
Nowe therefore because wee haue bene brought vp in the Kings palace, it was not meete for vs to see the Kings dishonour: for this cause haue we sent and certified the King,
15 för att man må göra efterforskningar i dina fäders krönikor; ty av dessa krönikor skall du finna och erfara att denna stad har varit en upprorisk stad, till förfång för konungar och länder, och att man i den har anstiftat oroligheter ända ifrån äldsta tider, varför ock denna stad har blivit förstörd.
That one may searche in the booke of the Chronicles of thy fathers, and thou shalt finde in the booke of the Chronicles, and perceiue that this citie is rebellious and noysome vnto Kings and prouinces, and that they haue moued sedition of olde time, for the which cause this citie was destroyed.
16 Så låta vi nu konungen veta, att om denna stad bliver uppbyggd och dess murar bliva satta i stånd, så skall du i följd härav icke mer hava någon del i landet på andra sidan floden."
Wee certifie the King therefore, that if this citie be buylded, and the foundation of the walles layd, by this meanes the portion beyonde the Riuer shall not be thine.
17 Då sände konungen följande svar till rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och de andra, deras medbröder, som bodde i Samaria och i det övriga landet på andra sidan floden: "Frid o. s. v.
The King sent an answere vnto Rehum the Chauncelour, and Shimshai the Scribe, and so the rest of their companions that dwelt in Samaria, and vnto the other beyond the Riuer, Shelam and Cheeth.
18 Den skrivelse som I haven sänt till oss har noggrant blivit uppläst för mig.
The letter which yee sent vnto vs, hath bene openly read before me,
19 Och sedan jag hade givit befallning att man skulle göra efterforskningar, fann man att denna stad ända ifrån äldsta tider har plägat sätta sig upp mot konungar, och att uppror och oroligheter där hava anstiftats.
And I haue commanded and they haue searched, and founde, that this citie of olde time hath made insurrection against kings, and hath rebelled, and rebellion hath bene committed therein.
20 I Jerusalem hava ock funnits mäktiga konungar, som hava varit herrar över allt land som ligger på andra sidan floden, och skatt, tull och vägpenningar hava blivit dem givna.
There haue bene mightie kings also ouer Ierusalem, which haue ruled ouer all beyonde the Riuer, and tolle, tribute, and custome was giuen vnto them.
21 Så utfärden nu en befallning att man förhindrar dessa män att bygga upp denna stad, till dess jag giver befallning därom.
Make ye now a decree, that those men may cease, and that the citie be not buylt, till I haue giuen another commandement.
22 Och sen till, att I icke handlen försumligt i denna sak, så att skadan icke växer, konungarna till förfång."
Take heede nowe that ye fayle not to doe this: why should domage grow to hurt the King?
23 Så snart nu vad som stod i konung Artasastas skrivelse hade blivit läst för Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och deras medbröder, gingo de med hast till judarna i Jerusalem och hindrade dem med våld och makt.)
When the copie of king Artahshashtes letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went vp in all the haste to Ierusalem vnto the Iewes, and caused them to cease by force and power.
24 Så förhindrades nu arbetet på Guds hus i Jerusalem. Och det blev förhindrat ända till den persiske konungen Darejaves' andra regeringsår.
Then ceased the worke of the house of God, which was in Ierusalem, and did stay vnto the second yeere of Darius King of Persia.
