1 Detta är Agurs, Jakes sons, ord och utsaga. Så talade den mannen till Itiel -- till Itiel och Ukal.
The words of Agur, son of Jakeh, [even] the oracle, —The utterance of the man, for Ithiel, for Ithiel and Ucal.
2 Ja, jag är för oförnuftig för att kunna räknas såsom människa, jag har icke mänskligt förstånd;
Surely, more brutish, am, I, than any man, nor doth, the understanding of a son of earth, pertain to me;
3 vishet har jag icke fått lära, så att jag äger kunskap om den Helige.
Neither have I learned wisdom, nor, the knowledge of the Holy Ones, can I acquire.
4 Vem har stigit upp till himmelen och åter farit ned? Vem har samlat vinden i sina händer? Vem har knutit in vattnet i ett kläde? Vem har fastställt jordens alla gränser? Vad heter han, och vad heter hans son -- du vet ju det?
Who hath ascended the heavens and then descended? Who hath gathered the wind into his two hands? Who hath wrapped up the waters in a mantle? Who hath set up all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what the name of his son, when thou knowest?
5 Allt Guds tal är luttrat; han är en sköld för dem som taga sin tillflykt till honom.
Every saying of God is refined, A shield, is, he, to them who seek refuge in him.
6 Lägg icke något till hans ord, på det att han icke må beslå dig med lögn.
Do not add unto his words, lest he convict thee, and thou be found false.
7 Om två ting beder jag dig, vägra mig dem icke, intill min död:
Two things, have I asked of thee, withhold them not from me, ere yet I die:
8 Låt fåfänglighet och lögn vara fjärran ifrån mig; och giv mig icke fattigdom, ej heller rikedom, men låt mig få det bröd mig tillkommer.
Vanity and falsehood, remove far from me, Neither poverty nor riches, give me, Feed me with the food appointed me:
9 Jag kunde eljest, om jag bleve alltför matt, förneka dig, att jag sporde: »Vem är HERREN?» eller om jag bleve alltför fattig, kunde jag bliva en tjuv, ja, förgripa mig på min Guds namn.
Lest I be full, and deny, and say—Who is Yahweh? or lest I be impoverished and steal, and do violence to the Name of my God.
10 Förtala icke en tjänare inför hans herre; han kunde eljest förbanna dig, så att du stode där med skam.
Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he revile thee, and thou be found guilty.
11 Ett släkte där man förbannar sin fader, och där man icke välsignar sin moder;
A generation! Its father, it revileth, and, its mother, it doth not bless.
12 ett släkte som tycker sig vara rent, fastän det icke har avtvått sin orenlighet;
A generation! Pure in its own eyes, yet, from its filth, hath it not been bathed,
13 ett släkte -- huru stolta äro icke dess ögon, och huru fulla av högmod äro icke dess blickar!
A generation! How lofty are its eyes, and its eyelashes uplifted.
14 ett släkte vars tänder äro svärd, och vars kindtänder äro knivar, så att de äta ut de betryckta ur landet och de fattiga ur människornas krets!
A generation! Swords, are its teeth, and, knives, its incisors, —to devour the humbled out of the earth, and the needy, from among men.
15 Blodigeln har två döttrar: »Giv hit, giv hit.» Tre finnas, som icke kunna mättas, ja, fyra, som aldrig säga: »Det är nog»:
The vampire, hath two daughters, Give! Give! Three, there are will not be satisfied, four, have not said, Enough!
16 dödsriket och den ofruktsammas kved, jorden, som icke kan mättas med vatten, och elden, som aldrig säger: »Det är nog.» (Sheol h7585)
Hades, and barrenness, —A land not satisfied with water, and fire, that saith not, Enough! (Sheol h7585)
17 Den som bespottar sin fader och försmår att lyda sin moder hans öga skola korparna vid bäcken hacka ut, och örnens ungar skola äta upp det.
The eye that mocketh a father, and despiseth to obey a mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young of the eagle shall eat it.
18 Tre ting äro mig för underbara, ja, fyra finnas, som jag icke kan spåra:
Three, things there are, too difficult for me, yea, four, which I do not understand:
19 örnens väg under himmelen, ormens väg över klippan, skeppets väg mitt i havet och en mans väg hos en ung kvinna.
The way of an eagle in the heavens, the way of a serpent on the rock, —the way of a ship in the heart of the sea, and the way of a man with a maid.
20 Sådant är äktenskapsbryterskans sätt: hon njuter sig mätt och stryker sig så om munnen och säger: »Jag har intet orätt gjort.»
So, is the way of a woman committing adultery, —she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no iniquity!
21 Tre finnas, under vilka jorden darrar, ja, fyra, under vilka den ej kan uthärda:
Under three things, a land is stirred, yea, under four, she cannot bear up:
22 under en träl, när han bliver konung, och en dåre, när han får äta sig mätt,
Under a servant, when he reigneth, and a base man, when he is surfeited with food;
23 under en försmådd kvinna, när hon får man och en tjänstekvinna, när hon tränger undan sin fru.
Under a hateful woman, when she is married, and a handmaid when she driveth out her mistress.
24 Fyra finnas, som äro små på jorden, och likväl är stor vishet dem beskärd:
Four, things there are, the small of the earth, —yet, they, are wiser than the wise:
25 myrorna äro ett svagt folk, men de bereda om sommaren sin föda;
The ants, a people, not strong, —yet prepare they, in summer, their food;
26 klippdassarna äro ett folk med ringa kraft, men i klippan bygga de sig hus;
The conies, a people of, no power, yet set they, among the crags, their house;
27 gräshopporna hava ingen konung, men i härordning draga de alla ut;
King, is there none, to, the locusts, —yet go forth in swarms, do they all;
28 gecko-ödlan kan gripas med händerna, dock bor hon i konungapalatser.
The lizard, with hands, reneweth its hold, —yet, the same, is in the palaces of the king.
29 Tre finnas, som skrida ståtligt fram, ja, fyra, som hava en ståtlig gång:
Three, things there are which step along well, ye, four, which excel in going:
30 lejonet, hjälten bland djuren, som ej viker tillbaka för någon,
The lion, hero among beasts, which turneth aside from the face of no one;
31 en stridsrustad häst och en bock och en konung i spetsen för sin här.
The greyhound, or the he-goat, —and a king, having a band of soldiers with him.
32 Om du har förhävt dig, evad det var dårskap eller det var medveten synd, så lägg handen på munnen.
If thou hast acted basely by lifting thyself up, —if thou hast plotted evil, [put thy] hand to [thy] mouth!
33 Ty såsom ost pressas ut ur mjölk, och såsom blod pressas ut ur näsan, så utpressas kiv ur vrede.
Surely, the pressing of milk, bringeth forth curd, and, the pressing of the nose, bringeth forth blood, and, the pressing of wrath, bringeth forth strife.
