1 Rykte är kosteligare än stor rikedom; och ynnest bättre än silfver och guld.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 Rike och fattige måste vara ibland hvarannan; Herren hafver gjort dem alla.
The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
3 Den kloke ser det onda, och tager sig vara; de oförnuftige löpa igenom, och få skada.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
4 Der man lider i Herrans fruktan, der är rikedom, ära och lif.
By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
5 Spjut och snaror äro på dens vrångas väg; men den som drager sig der långt ifrå, han bevarar sitt lif.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
6 Såsom man vän ett barn, så låter det icke af, då det gammalt varder.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
7 Den rike råder öfver de fattiga, och den som borgar, han är hans träl som lånar.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 Den som orätt sår, han skall uppskära vedermödo, och skall igenom sins ondskos ris förgås.
He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.
9 Ett mildt öga varder välsignadt; ty han gifver af sitt bröd dem fattiga.
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10 Drif ut bespottaren, så kommer kifvet bort; så vänder igen träta och smälek.
Cast out the scorner, and contention shall end; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.
11 Den som ett trofast hjerta hafver, och täckeliga talar, hans vän är Konungen.
He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
12 Herrans ögon bevara godt råd; men föraktarens ord omstörter han.
The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.
13 Den late säger: Ett lejon är ute; jag måtte varda dräpen på gatone.
The slothful man saith, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.
14 Ens skökos mun är en djup grop; dem Herren ogunstig är, han faller deruti.
The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit: he that is abhorred by the LORD shall fall in it.
15 Galenskap är i piltens hjerta; men tuktans ris drifver den långt ifrå honom.
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 Den som den fattiga orätt gör, på det hans gods må mycket varda, han skall ock gifva enom rikom, och fattig varda.
He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.
17 Böj din öron, och hör de visas ord, och lägg uppå hjertat mina läro.
Bow down thy ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart to my knowledge.
18 Ty det skall väl bekomma dig, om du dem när dig behåller; och de skola tillsammans genom din mun väl lyckas.
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keepest them within thee; they shall all be ready on thy lips.
19 Att ditt hopp skall vara intill Herran, måste jag dig om sådant dagliga förmana.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Hafver jag icke margfaldeliga skrifvit dig före, med råd och läro;
Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,
21 På det jag skulle visa dig en vissan grund till sanningena, att du måtte kunna rätteliga svara dem som dig sända?
That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send to thee?
22 Beröfva icke den fattiga, ändock han fattig är; och undertryck icke den elända i portenom.
Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
23 Ty Herren skall handla deras sak, och skall förtrycka deras förtryckare.
For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.
24 Gif dig icke i sällskap med en vredsam man, och håll dig icke intill en grym man;
Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
25 Att du tilläfventyrs icke lärer hans väg, och får dine själs förargelse.
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Var icke när dem som sina hand förpligta, och för skuld i borgan gå.
Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.
27 Ty om du icke hafver till att betala, så tager man dina säng bort under dig.
If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 För icke tillbaka de förra råmärke, som dine fäder gjort hafva.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Ser du en man endigan i sin ärende, han skall stå för Konungenom; och skall icke stå för de oädla.
Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before obscure men.
