Predikaren 6
1 Det är ett ondt ting, som jag såg under solene, och är allmänneligit med menniskorna:
There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it [is] great on man:
2 En, hvilkom Gud hafver gifvit rikedom, ägodelar och äro, och honom fattas intet, det hans hjerta begärar, och Gud gifver honom dock icke magt till att nyttjat, utan en annar förtärer det; det är fåfängelighet, och en ond plåga.
A man to whom God gives wealth, and riches, and honor, and there is no lack to his soul of all that he desires, and God does not give him power to eat of it, but a stranger eats it; this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease.
3 Födde han än hundrade barn, och hade så långt lif, att han i mång år lefde, och hans själ kunde icke mätta sig af ägodelar, och blefve utan graf; om honom säger jag, att en otida född är bättre än han.
If a man begets one hundred, and lives many years, and is great, because they are the days of his years, and his soul is not satisfied from the goodness, and also he has not had a grave, I have said, “Better than he [is] the untimely birth.”
4 Ty han kommer i fåfängelighet, och i mörker far han bort, och hans namn blifver betäckt i mörker.
For in vanity he came in, and in darkness he goes, and in darkness his name is covered,
5 Han hafver ingen glädje af solene, och hafver ingen ro, hvarken här eller der.
even the sun he has not seen nor known, more rest has this than that.
6 Om han än lefde i tutusend år, så är han aldrig väl tillfrids. Kommer det icke allt uti ett rum?
And though he had lived one thousand years twice over, yet he has not seen good; does not everyone go to the same place?
7 Hvarjo och ene mennisko är arbete pålagdt, efter hennes mått; men hjertat kan icke blifva dervid.
All the labor of man [is] for his mouth, And yet the soul is not filled.
8 Ty hvad uträttar en vis mer än en dåre? Hvad tager sig den fattige före, att han vill vara ibland de lefvande?
For what advantage [is] to the wise above the fool? What to the poor who knows to walk before the living?
9 Det är bättre att bruka de ägodelar, som för handene äro, än fara efter andra; det är ock fåfängelighet och jämmer.
Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the going of the soul. This [is] also vanity and distress of spirit.
10 Hvad äret? Fastän en högt berömder är, så vet man dock, att han är en menniska, och kan icke träta med det som honom for mägtig är.
What [is] that which has been? Already is its name called, and it is known that it [is] man, And he is not able to contend with him who is stronger than he.
11 Ty fåfängeligheten är alltör mycken. Hvad hafver en menniska mer deraf?
For there are many things multiplying vanity; What advantage [is] to man?
12 Ty ho vet hvad menniskone nyttigt är i sin lifstid, medan hon lefver i sine fåfängelighet, hvilken är som en skugge? Eller ho vill säga menniskone, hvad efter henne komma skall under solene?
For who knows what [is] good for a man in life, the number of the days of the life of his vanity, and he makes them as a shadow? For who declares to man what is after him under the sun?
