1 Och det begaf sig derefter, att Ammons barnas Konung blef död, och hans son Hanun vardt Konung i hans stad.

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of 'Ammon died, and Chanun his son reigned in his stead.

2 Då sade David: Jag vill göra barmhertighet på Hanun, Nahas son, såsom hans fader hafver gjort barmhertighet med mig. Och sände bort och lät genom sina tjenare hugsvala honom öfver hans fader. Och Davids tjenare kommo i Ammons barnas land.

Then said David, I will show kindness unto Chanun the son of Nachash, as his father showed me kindness. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came unto the land of the children of 'Ammon.

3 Då sade de öfverste öfver Ammons barn till sin herra Hanun: Menar du, att David hedrar din fader för din ögon, att han hafver sändt hugsvalare till dig? Menar du icke, att han fördenskull hafver sändt sina tjenare till dig, att han skall utspana och bespeja staden, och förstöra honom?

And the princes of the children of 'Ammon said unto Chanun their Lord, Doth David honor thy father in thy eyes, that he hath sent comforters unto thee! hath David not sent his servants unto thee, in order to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

4 Då tog Hanun Davids tjenare, och lät raka dem halft skägget af; och skar half kläden af på dem, allt intill bältet, och lät så gå dem.

Chanun thereupon took David's servants, and shaved off the one-half of their beard, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Då det vardt bådadt David, sände han emot dem; förty männerna voro ganska mycket skämde. Och Konungen lät säga dem: Blifver i Jericho tilldess edart skägg växer, och kommer så igen.

When they told it unto David, he sent [persons] to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed; and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beard be grown, and then return.

6 Då nu Ammons barn sågo, att de voro illa luktande vordne för David, sände de bort, och lejde sig de Syrer af Rehobs hus, och de Syrer i Zoba, tjugutusend män fotfolk, och af Konung Maacha tusend män, och af Istob tolftusend män.

And when the children of 'Ammon saw that they were become in bad odor with David, the children of 'Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rechob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand men on foot, and the king of Ma'achah with a thousand men, and of the people of Tob twelve thousand men.

7 Då David det hörde, sände han Joab med hela hären af krigsfolket.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army, [and] the mighty men.

8 Och Ammons barn drogo ut, och skickade sig till strid ut för stadsporten; men de Syrer af Zoba, af Rehob, af Istob, och af Maacha, voro allena i markene.

And the children of 'Ammon came out, and put themselves in battle-array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rechob, and the people of Tob and Ma'achah, were by themselves in the field.

9 Då nu Joab såg, att striden var ställd på honom både bak och före, utvalde han utaf alla de unga män i Israel, och skickade sig emot de Syrer.

When now Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he selected from all the chosen men of Israel, and arrayed himself against the Syrians:

10 Och det andra folket lät han under sins broders hand Abisai, och han skickade sig emot de Ammons barn;

And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, who arrayed himself against the children of 'Ammon.

11 Och sade: Om de Syrer varda mig för mägtige, så kom mig till hjelp; om Ammons barn varda dig öfvermägtige, så vill jag komma dig till hjelp.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then shalt thou bring me help; but if the children of 'Ammon be too strong for thee, then will I go to help thee.

12 Var vid god tröst, och låt oss stå fasta för vårt folk och för vår Guds städer; men Herren göre hvad honom täckes.

Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves in behalf of our people, and in behalf of the cities of our God: and may the Lord do that which seemeth good in his eyes.

13 Och Joab drog åstad med det folk, som när honom var, till att strida emot de Syrer; och de flydde för honom.

And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians; and they fled from before him.

14 Och då Ammons barn sågo, att de Syrer flydde, flydde de ock för Abisai, och drogo in i staden. Så vände Joab om ifrån Ammons barn, och kom till Jerusalem.

And when the children of 'Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then did they also fly before Abishai, and entered into the city. Joab then returned from the children of 'Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 Och då de Syrer sågo, att de voro slagne för Israel, församlade de sig tillhopa.

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves altogether.

16 Och HadarEser sände bort, och lät utkomma de Syrer på hinsidon älfven; och lät deras magt inkomma; och Sobach, HadarEsers härhöfvitsman, drog för dem.

And Hadar'ezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river, and they came to Chelam; and Shobach the captain of the army of Hadar'ezer went before them.

17 Då det vardt bådadt David, församlade han tillhopa hela Israel, och drog öfver Jordan, och kom till Helam; och de Syrer skickade sig emot David, till att strida med honom.

And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Chelam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle-array against David, and fought with him.

18 Men de Syrer flydde för Israel, och David slog ihjäl de Syrer sjuhundrad vagnar, och fyratiotusend resenärar; dertill slog han Sobach härhöfvitsmannen, så att han blef der död.

And the Syrians fled from before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men] of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen; and Shobach also the captain of their army he smote, and he died there.

19 Då nu de Konungar, som voro under HadarEser, sågo att de slagne voro för Israel, gjorde de frid med Israel, och vordo dem underdånige; och de Syrer fruktade sig mer hjelpa Ammons barn.

And when all the kings, the vassals to Hadar'ezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them: and the Syrians feared to help the children of 'Ammon any more.
