1 Samuelsboken 14
1 Det begaf sig i den tiden, att Jonathan, Sauls son, sade till sin dräng, som hans värjo bar: Kom, låt oss gå utöfver till de Philisteers lägre, som deruppe är; och han sade sinom fader intet till.
One day Jonathan, son of Saul, said to the young armor-bearer, “Come on, let's cross over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he didn't let his father know his plans.
2 Men Saul blef ytterst i Gibea under ett granatträ, som i förstadenom var; och det folk, som när honom var, var vid sexhundrad män.
Saul was staying near Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. He had about six hundred men with him,
3 Och Ahia, Achitobs son, Icabods broders, Pinehas sons, Eli sons, var Herrans Prest i Silo, och drog lifkjortelen uppå; folket visste icke heller, att Jonathan var bortgången.
including Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, priest of the Lord in Shiloh. No one realized Jonathan had left.
4 Och i vägenom, der Jonathan sökte efter att gå öfver till de Philisteers lägre, voro två branta klippor, den ena på denna sidone, och den andra på hinsidone; den ena het Bozez, den andra Sene.
Cliffs stood on both sides of the pass that Jonathan planned to cross to reach the Philistine garrison, one called Bozez and the other Seneh.
5 Och den ena var norrut ifrå Michmas, och den andra var söderut ifrå Gaba.
The cliff to the north was on the Michmash side, the one to the south on the Geba side.
6 Och Jonathan sade till sin vapnedragare: Kom, låt oss gå utöfver till dessa oomskornas lägre; tilläfventyrs varder Herren något uträttandes genom oss; förty det är icke Herranom tungt hjelpa genom många, eller genom få.
Jonathan said to the young armor-bearer, “Come on, let's cross over to the garrison of these heathen men. Maybe the Lord will help us out. It's not a problem for the Lord to win, whether by many or by few.”
7 Då svarade honom hans vapnedragare: Gör allt det i dino hjerta är; gack åstad, si, jag är med dig såsom ditt hjerta vill.
“You choose what you want to do,” the armor-bearer replied. “I'm with you whatever you decide!”
8 Jonathan sade: Nu väl, när vi komme ditöfver till det folket, och de få se oss;
“Let's go then!” Jonathan said. “We'll cross over in their direction so they can see us.
9 Om de då säga: Står qvare, tilldess vi komme till eder; så vilje vi blifva ståndande i vårt rum, och icke stiga upp till dem.
If they tell us, ‘Wait there until we come down to you,’ we will wait where we are and we won't go up to them.
10 Men om de säga: Kommer hitupp till oss; så vilje vi stiga upp till dem; så hafver Herren gifvit dem oss i våra händer; och det skall oss vara för ett tecken.
But if they say, ‘Come on up to us,’ we'll climb up, for that will be the sign that the Lord has handed them over to us.”
11 Då nu de Philisteers lägre fingo se dem båda, sade de Philisteer: Si, de Ebreer äro utkrupne utu hålen, der de sig gömt hafva.
So both of them let themselves be seen by Philistine garrison. “Hey, look!” shouted the Philistines. “The Hebrews are coming out of the holes they were hiding in.”
12 Och männerna i lägret svarade Jonathan och hans vapnedragare, och sade: Kommer hitupp till oss, vi vilje väl lära eder. Då sade Jonathan till sin vapnedragare: Träd efter mig, Herren hafver gifvit dem i Israels händer.
The men from the garrison called down to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up here, and we'll teach you a thing or two!” “Follow me up,” Jonathan told his armor-bearer, “for the Lord has handed them over to Israel.”
13 Och Jonathan klef med händer och fötter uppföre, och hans vapnedragare efter honom. Då föllo de neder för Jonathan, och hans vapnedragare slog allt ihjäl efter;
So Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. Jonathan attacked and killed them, and his armor-bearer followed doing the same.
14 Så att första slagtningen, som Jonathan och hans vapnedragare gjorde, var vid tjugu män, på en halfvan åker vid pass, som ett par oxars dagsplöjning är.
In this first attack, Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed about twenty men over an area of half an acre.
15 Och en rädsel kom på markene i lägret, och på hela folket i lägrena; och de som utsände voro till att förhärja, dem kom ock rädsel uppå, och landet skalf dervid; ty det var en förskräckelse af Gudi.
Then Philistines went into a panic, in the camp, in the field, and throughout their army. Even those in the outposts and the groups of raiders became terrified. The earth shook—this was a panic from God.
16 Och Sauls väktare i Gibea BenJamins fingo se, att hopen skingrades, och lupo hit och dit, och vordo slagne.
Saul's lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the Philistine army melting away, scattering in all directions.
17 Saul sade till folket, som när honom var: Räkner, och ser till, hvilken af oss är bortgången; och då de räknade, si, då var Jonathan och hans vapnedragare icke der.
Saul told the soldiers with him, “Do a roll-call and find out who isn't here with us.” When they did the roll-call, they discovered that Jonathan and his armor-bearer weren't there.
18 Då sade Saul till Ahia: Bär fram Guds ark; ty Guds ark var på den tiden när Israels barn.
Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the Ark of God here.” (At the time the Ark of God traveled with the Israelites.)
19 Och som Saul ännu talade med Prestenom, förökade sig sorlet och löpandet uti de Philisteers lägre. Och Saul sade till Presten: Tag dina hand af.
But as Saul was speaking to the priest, the commotion coming from the Philistine camp grew louder and louder. So Saul told the priest, “Forget it!”
20 Och Saul ropade, och allt folket, som med honom var, och kommo i stridena; och si, då gick hvars och ens svärd emot den andra, och var ett mägta sorl.
Then Saul and all his army assembled and went into battle. They discovered the Philistines were in total disarray, attacking each other with swords.
21 Och de Ebreer, som tillförene hade varit när de Philisteer, och hade varit uppdragne med dem i lägret allt omkring, gåfvo sig intill Israel, som voro med Saul och Jonathan.
The Hebrews who had previously sided with the Philistines, and who were with them in their camp, switched sides and joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
22 Och alle män af Israel, som sig förgömt hade på Ephraims berg, då de hörde att de Philisteer flydde, följde de efter med de andra till stridena.
When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were running away, they also joined in chasing after the Philistines to attack them.
23 Alltså halp då Herren Israel på den tiden, och slaget stod allt intill BethAven.
On that day the Lord saved Israel, and the battle extended past Beth-aven.
24 Och då Israels män försmäktade på den dagen, besvor Saul folket, och sade: Förbannad vare hvar och en, som bröd äter intill aftonen, att jag må hämnas på mina fiendar. Så smakade ock allt folket intet bröd.
It was difficult for the men of Israel that day because Saul had ordered the army to take an oath, saying, “Cursed is anyone who eats anything before evening, before I have avenged myself on my enemies.” So no one in the army had eaten anything.
25 Och hela landet kom i skogen, och der låg hannog på markene.
When they all entered the forest they found honeycomb on the ground.
26 Då folket kom in i skogen, si, då flöt der hannog; men ingen lät honom med handene komma till sin mun; ty folket fruktade sig för eden.
While they were in the forest they saw the honey running out, but no one picked it up to eat it because they were all afraid of the oath they had taken.
27 Men Jonathan hade icke hört, att hans fader hade besvorit folket; och räckte sin staf ut, som han hade i sine hand, och doppade med ändanom i hannogskakona, och vände sina hand till sin mun; så vordo hans ögon frisk.
But Jonathan hadn't heard that his father had ordered the army to take this oath. So he stuck the end of his stick into the honeycomb, picked up a piece to eat, and he felt much better.
28 Då svarade en af folkena, och sade: Din fader hafver besvorit folket, och sagt: Förbannad vare hvar och en, som något äter i dag. Och folket var förtröttadt.
But one of the soldiers told him, “Your father made the army take a solemn oath, saying, ‘Cursed is anyone who eats anything today!’ That is why the men are exhausted.”
29 Då sade Jonathan: Min fader hafver bedröfvat landet; ser, huru min ögon äro frisk vordne deraf, att jag af denna hannogen något litet smakat hafver.
“My father has caused a whole lot of trouble for everyone,” Jonathan replied. “See how well I am because I've eaten a little of this honey.
30 Hade folket i dag ätit af sina fiendars rof, som de funnit hafva, så hade ock slagtningen vordit större emot de Philisteer.
It would have been so much better if only the army had eaten plenty today from the plunder taken from their enemies! How many more Philistines would have been killed?”
31 Och de slogo på den dagen de Philisteer, ifrå Michmas allt intill Ajalon; och folket vardt ganska trött.
After defeating the Philistines that day, killing them from Michmash to Aijalon, the Israelites were totally exhausted.
32 Och folket vände sig till bytet, och togo får, fä och kalfvar, och slagtade på jordene, och åto det med blodet.
They grabbed the plunder, taking sheep, cattle, and calves, and slaughtered them right there on the ground. But they ate them with the blood.
33 Så vardt Saul förkunnadt: Si, folket hafver syndat emot Herran, och ätit blod. Han sade: I hafven illa gjort; välter hit till mig en stor sten.
Saul was told, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat with the blood.” “Law-breakers!” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here right now!”
34 Och Saul sade ytterligare: Går ut ibland folket, och säger dem, att hvar och en hafve sin oxa och sitt får till mig, och slagter det här, att I mågen äta, och icke synda emot Herranom med det blodätandet. Så drog allt folket fram, hvar och en sin oxa i sine hand, om nattena, och slagtade det der.
Then he said, “Go around the soldiers and tell them, ‘Every man must bring me his cattle or his sheep and slaughter them here, and then eat. Don't sin against the Lord by eating meat with the blood.’” Everyone in the army brought what he had and slaughtered it there that night.
35 Och Saul byggde Herranom ett altare; det är det första altare, som han byggde Herranom.
So Saul built an altar to the Lord. This was the first altar he had built to the Lord.
36 Och Saul sade: Låt oss draga ned efter de Philisteer i natt, och beröfva dem, tilldess i morgon ljust varder, att vi ingen af dem låte öfverblifva. De svarade: Gör allt det dig täckes. Men Presten sade: Låt oss gå hit till Gud.
Saul said, “Let's go and chase down the Philistines during night and plunder them till dawn, leaving no survivors.” “Do what you think best,” they replied. But the priest said, “Let's ask God first.”
37 Och Saul frågade Gud: Skall jag draga ned efter de Philisteer, och vill du gifva dem uti Israels händer? Men han svarade honom på den tiden intet.
Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and chase down the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?” But that day God didn't answer him.
38 Då sade Saul: Låt gå hitfram all hörn af folket; och förfarer, och tillser, när hvilkom denna synden är på denna tid.
So Saul gave the order, “All you army commanders, come here so we can investigate what sin has happened today.
39 Ty så visst som Herren Israels hjelpare lefver, om det än vore min son Jonathan, så skall han dö. Och ingen svarade honom utaf hela folkena.
I swear on the life of the Lord who saves Israel, that even if it's my son Jonathan, he will have to die!” But no one of the whole army said anything.
40 Och han sade till hela Israel: Varer I på den sidon; jag och min son Jonathan vilje vara på desso sidone. Folket sade till Saul: Gör hvad dig täckes.
Saul told them all, “You stand over to one side, and I and my son Jonathan will stand on the opposite side.” “Do what you think best,” the army replied.
41 Och Saul sade till Herran Israels Gud: Gör det rätt är. Då råkade det på Jonathan och Saul; och folket gick qvitt ut.
Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Let the Thummin show.” Jonathan and Saul were identified, while everyone else was cleared.
42 Saul sade: Kaster öfver mig och min son Jonathan. Då råkade det på Jonathan.
Then Saul said, “Cast lots between me and my son Jonathan.” Jonathan was selected.
43 Och Saul sade till Jonathan: Säg mig, hvad hafver du gjort? Jonathan lät honom förståt, och sade: Jag smakade litet hannog med stafven, som jag i mine hand hade; och si, derföre måste jag dö.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul asked Jonathan. “I just tasted a little honey with the end of my stick,” Jonathan told him. “Here I am, and I have to die.”
44 Då sade Saul: Gud göre mig det och det; Jonathan, du måste döden dö.
Saul said, “May God punish me very severely if you do not die, Jonathan!”
45 Men folket sade till Saul: Skulle Jonathan dö, den en så stor salighet gjort hafver i Israel? Bort det! Så visst som Herren lefver, icke ett hår af hans hufvud skall falla på jordena; förty Gud hafver i dag gjort det igenom honom. Alltså friade folket Jonathan, att han icke dö måste.
But the people told Saul, “Does Jonathan have to die, the one who achieved this great victory in Israel? Absolutely not! We swear on the life of the Lord, not a single hair of his head will fall to the ground, for it was with God's help that he achieved this today.” The people saved Jonathan, and he didn't die.
46 Så drog Saul upp ifrå de Philisteer; och de Philisteer drogo till sitt rum.
Saul stopped chasing down the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own country.
47 Men då Saul hade tagit riket in öfver Israel, stridde han emot alla sina fiendar allt omkring; emot de Moabiter, emot Ammons barn, emot de Edomeer, emot Zoba Konungar, emot de Philisteer; och hvart han vände sig, der straffade han.
After Saul had made his hold over Israel secure, he fought against all his enemies all around: Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Whatever direction he went he defeated them all.
48 Och han församlade en här, och slog de Amalekiter; och friade Israel ifrån allas deras hand, som dem förtryckte.
He fought bravely, conquering the Amalekites, saving Israel from those who plundered them.
49 Och Saul hade söner, Jonathan, Isvi, MalchiSua. Och hans två döttrar heto alltså: den förstfödda Merob, och den yngsta Michal.
Saul's sons were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were Merab, (the firstborn), and Michal, (the younger one).
50 Och Sauls hustru het Ahinoam, Ahimaaz dotter; och hans härhöfvitsman het Abner, Ners son, Sauls faderbroders.
The name of his wife was Ahinoam, daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of Saul's army commander was Abner, son of Ner, and Ner was Saul's uncle.
51 Men Kis var Sauls fader, och Ner, Abners fader, var Abiels son.
Saul's father Kish and Abner's father Ner were sons of Abiel.
52 Och ett mägtigt örlig var emot de Philisteer, så länge Saul lefde; och hvar Saul såg en doglig och stridsam man, den tog han till sig.
Throughout Saul's lifetime there was constant war with the Philistines. Saul recruited into his army every strong warrior and every brave fighter that he met.
