1 Hili ndilo lililotokea wakati wa utawala wa Mfalme Ahasuero, yule aliyetawala juu ya majimbo mia na ishirini na saba tangu Bara Hindi hadi Kushi.
And it came to pass after these things in the days of Artaxerxes, —(this Artaxerxes ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India)—
2 Wakati huo Mfalme Ahasuero alitawala katika kiti chake cha enzi katika ngome ya mji wa Shushani.
in those days, when king Artaxerxes was on the throne in the city of Susa,
3 Katika mwaka wa tatu wa utawala wake, alifanya karamu kwa ajili ya wakuu wake wote pamoja na maafisa. Akawaalika viongozi wa jeshi wa Uajemi na Umedi, wana wa wafalme na wakuu wa majimbo.
in the third year of his reign, he made a feast to his friends, and the other nations, and to the nobles of the Persians and Medes, and the chief of the satraps.
4 Kwa siku zote 180 mfalme alionyesha utajiri mwingi wa ufalme wake, fahari na utukufu wa enzi yake.
And after this, after he had shewn to them the wealth of his kingdom, and the abundant glory of his wealth during a hundred and eighty days,
5 Siku hizo zilipopita, mfalme alifanya karamu kwa muda wa siku saba, katika bustani ya ndani katika jumba la kifalme, kwa ajili ya watu wote kuanzia mdogo hadi mkubwa, waliokuwa katika ngome ya mji wa Shushani.
when, [I say], the days of the marriage feast were completed, the king made a banquet to the nations who were present in the city six days, in the court of the king’s house,
6 Bustani ilikuwa na mapazia ya kitani nyeupe na buluu, yaliyofungiwa kamba za kitani nyeupe na kitambaa cha zambarau, kwenye pete za fedha juu ya nguzo za marmar. Kulikuwepo viti vya dhahabu na vya fedha vilivyokuwa vimewekwa kwenye ile sakafu iliyotengenezwa kwa mawe ya rangi, marmar, lulumizi na mawe mengine ya thamani.
[which was] adorned with [hangings] of fine linen and flax on cords of fine linen and purple, fastened to golden and silver studs, on pillars of Parian marble and stone: [there were] golden and silver couches on a pavement of emerald stone, and of pearl, and of Parian stone, and open-worked coverings variously flowered, [having] roses worked round about;
7 Vyombo vya dhahabu vilitumika kwa watu kunywea mvinyo, kila kimoja tofauti na kingine, naye mfalme akatoa mvinyo kwa wingi kwa kadiri ya ukarimu wake.
gold and silver cups, and a small cup of carbuncle set out of the value of thirty thousand talents, abundant and sweet wine, which the king himself drank.
8 Kwa amri ya mfalme kila mgeni aliruhusiwa kunywa alichotaka, kwa kuwa mfalme alitoa maagizo kwa watumishi wote wa kuhudumu mvinyo kumhudumia kila mtu kwa jinsi alivyotaka.
And this banquet was not according to the appointed law; but so the king would have it: and he charged the stewards to perform his will and that of the company.
9 Malkia Vashti pia akawafanyia wanawake karamu katika jumba la kifalme la Mfalme Ahasuero.
Also Astin the queen made a banquet for the women in the palace where king Artaxerxes [dwelt].
10 Siku ya saba, wakati Mfalme Ahasuero alikuwa amesisimka roho yake kwa mvinyo, aliamuru matowashi saba waliokuwa wakimhudumia, yaani, Mehumani, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethari na Karkasi,
Now on the seventh day the king, being merry, told Aman, and Bazan, and Tharrha, and Barazi, and Zatholtha, and Abataza, and Tharaba, the seven chamberlains, servants of king Artaxerxes,
11 kumleta Malkia Vashti mbele ya mfalme akiwa amevaa taji lake la kifalme, ili aonyeshe uzuri wake kwa watu na wakuu, kwa kuwa alikuwa ni mzuri wa kupendeza.
to bring in the queen to him, to enthrone her, and crown her with the diadem, and to shew her to the princes, and her beauty to the nations: for she was beautiful.
12 Lakini wakati watumishi walipotoa amri ya mfalme, Malkia Vashti alikataa kuja. Ndipo mfalme alighadhibika, na hasira yake ikawaka.
But queen Astin hearkened not to him to come with the chamberlains: so the king was grieved and angered.
13 Kwa kuwa ilikuwa desturi ya mfalme kupata ushauri kwa wataalamu katika mambo ya sheria na haki, alizungumza na watu wenye busara, ambao walijua nyakati,
And he said to his friends, Thus has Astin spoken: pronounce therefore upon this [case] law and judgment.
14 nao waliokuwa karibu na mfalme ni Karshena, Shethari, Admatha, Tarshishi, Meresi, Marsena na Memukani, wakuu saba wa Uajemi na Umedi waliokuwa na nafasi ya pekee kwa mfalme nao walikuwa na vyeo vya juu kabisa katika utawala wake.
So Arkesæus, and Sarsathæus, and Malisear, the princes of the Persians and Medes, who were near the king, who sat chief [in rank] by the king, drew near to him,
15 Mfalme akauliza, “Kulingana na sheria, Malkia Vashti anapaswa kutendewa nini? Malkia hakutii amri ya Mfalme Ahasuero ambayo matowashi walimpelekea.”
and reported to him according to the laws how it was proper to do to queen Astin, because she had not done the things commanded of the king by the chamberlains.
16 Kisha Memukani akajibu mbele ya mfalme na wakuu, “Malkia Vashti si kwamba amemkosea mfalme tu bali pia amewakosea wakuu wote na watu wa himaya yote ya Mfalme Ahasuero.
And Muchæus said to the king and to the princes, Queen Astin has not wronged the king only, but also all the king’s rulers and princes:
17 Kwa maana tendo hili la malkia litajulikana kwa wanawake wote, kwa hiyo watawadharau waume zao na kusema, ‘Mfalme Ahasuero aliagiza Malkia Vashti aletwe mbele yake, lakini alikataa.’
for he has told them the words of the queen, and how she disobeyed the king. As then, [said he], she refused [to obey] king Artaxerxes,
18 Leo hii wanawake wa wakuu wa Uajemi na Umedi ambao wamesikia juu ya tabia ya malkia watawatendea wakuu wote wa mfalme vivyo hivyo. Hapatakuwepo na mwisho wa dharau na magomvi.
so this day shall the other ladies of the chiefs of the Persians and Medes, having heard what she said to the king, dare in the same way to dishonour their husbands.
19 “Kwa hiyo, kama itampendeza mfalme, atoe amri ya kifalme na iandikwe katika sheria ya Uajemi na Umedi, ambayo haitabadilika, kwamba Vashti kamwe asije tena mbele ya Mfalme Ahasuero. Pia mfalme na atoe hiyo nafasi yake ya umalkia kwa mwanamke mwingine aliye bora kumliko yeye.
If then it seem good to the king, let him make a royal decree, and let it be written according to the laws of the Medes and Persians, and let him not alter [it]: and let not the queen come in to him any more; and let the king give her royalty to a woman better than she.
20 Kisha mbiu hii ya mfalme itakapotangazwa katika himaya yake iliyo kubwa sana, wanawake wote watawaheshimu waume zao, kuanzia mdogo hadi mkubwa.”
And let the law of the king which he shall have made, be widely proclaimed, in his kingdom: and so shall all the women give honour to their husbands, from the poor even to the rich.
21 Mfalme na wakuu wake walipendezwa na shauri hili, hivyo basi mfalme akafanya kama Memukani alivyopendekeza.
And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did as Muchæus had said,
22 Alipeleka barua katika sehemu zote za ufalme wake, kwa kila jimbo kwa maandishi yake mwenyewe na kwa kila watu katika lugha yao wenyewe, akitangaza kwa msemo wa kila watu kwamba inampasa kila mwanaume kuwa mtawala wa nyumba yake mwenyewe.
and sent into all his kingdom through the several provinces, according to their language, in order that men might be feared in their own houses.
