Nehemías 4

1 Ahora, Sanbalat, al oír que estábamos construyendo el muro, estaba muy enojado, y en su ira se burló de los judíos.

But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2 Y al oír a sus compatriotas y al ejército de Samaria, dijo: ¿Qué están haciendo estos judíos lánguidos? ¿Se harán fuertes? ¿Harán ofrendas? ¿Terminarán el trabajo en un día? ¿Harán que las piedras que han sido quemadas vuelvan a salir del polvo?

And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said: 'What do these feeble Jews? will they restore at will? will they sacrifice? will they make an end this day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned?'

3 Entonces Tobías, el amonita, estaba junto a él, y dijo: Tal es su edificio que si un zorro lo sube, su muro de piedra será derribado.

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said: 'Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.'

4 Escucha, oh Dios nuestro, porque somos menospreciados. Que sus palabras de vergüenza vuelvan sobre sí mismos, y que sean entregados a la cautividad a otro país:

Hear, O our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up to spoiling in a land of captivity;

5 No perdones su iniquidad, ni que sus pecados sean eliminados de ti, porque han insultado a los constructores y te han provocado a la ira.

and cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before Thee; for they have vexed Thee before the builders.

6 Así que continuamos construyendo el muro; y toda la pared estaba unida hasta la mitad, porque las personas trabajaban duro.

So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half the height thereof; for the people had a mind to work.

7 Pero cuando llegó a oídos de Sanbalat y de Tobías, de los árabes, de los amonitas y de los asdoditas, la construcción de los muros de Jerusalén avanzaba y los lugares destruidos se empezaban a tapar, estaban llenos de ira.

But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth;

8 E hicieron designios, todos juntos, para venir y atacar a Jerusalén, causando problemas allí.

and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

9 Pero hicimos nuestra oración a Dios, y tuvimos a los hombres vigilando contra ellos día y noche para defendernos de ellos.

But we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10 Y Judá dijo: La fuerza de los obreros está cediendo, ante la cantidad de ruinas; Es imposible para nosotros levantar el muro.

And Judah said: 'The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.'

11 Y los que estaban contra nosotros dijeron: Sin su conocimiento y sin que nos vean, vendremos entre ellos y los mataremos, haciendo que el trabajo se detenga.

And our adversaries said: 'They shall not know, neither see, till we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.'

12 Y sucedió que cuando los judíos que vivían cerca de ellos vinieron, nos dijeron una y otra vez: “Desde todas las direcciones los atacaran”.

And it came to pass that, when the Jews that dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times: 'Ye must return unto us from all places.'

13 Entonces, en la parte más baja del espacio en la parte posterior de las paredes, en lugares abiertos, puse a la gente por familias, con sus espadas, sus lanzas y sus arcos.

Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 Y después de mirar, me levanté y dije a los nobles, a los jefes y al resto de la gente: No teman a ellos; ten en mente al Señor, que es grande y muy temible, y luchen por sus hermanos, sus hijos y sus hijas, sus esposas y sus casas.

And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people: 'Be not ye afraid of them; remember the Lord, who is great and awful, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.'

15 Y cuando llegó a oídos de los que estaban contra nosotros, que sabíamos de sus planes y que Dios había hecho que sus planes fracasaran, todos regresamos a la pared, cada uno a su obra.

And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16 Y desde ese momento, la mitad de mis sirvientes estaban haciendo su parte del trabajo, y la mitad guardaba las lanzas, corazas, los arcos y los escudos; y los jefes daban su apoyo los hombres de Judá.

And it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants wrought in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 Los que estaban construyendo la pared y los que movían material hicieron su parte, todos trabajando con una mano, con su lanza en la otra;

They that builded the wall and they that bore burdens laded themselves, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon;

18 Cada constructor estaba trabajando con su espada a su lado. Y a mi lado había un hombre para sonar la bocina.

and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the horn was by me.

19 Y dije a los grandes, a los jefes y al resto de la gente: El trabajo es grande y está muy espaciado y estamos muy lejos unos de otros en la pared.

And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people: 'The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another;

20 Dondequiera que estés cuando suene la bocina, ven aquí a nosotros; Nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros.

in what place soever ye hear the sound of the horn, resort ye thither unto us; our God will fight for us.'

21 Así que continuamos con el trabajo; y la mitad de ellos tenía lanzas en sus manos desde el amanecer de la mañana hasta que se vieron las estrellas.

So we wrought in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

22 Y al mismo tiempo, dije a la gente: Que todos los que están con su siervo vengan a Jerusalén por la noche, para que por la noche puedan vigilarnos y seguir trabajando durante el día.

Likewise at the same time said I unto the people: 'Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labour in the day.'

23 Así que ninguno de nosotros, ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis sirvientes, ni los vigilantes que estaban conmigo, no se quitaron la ropa, ni siquiera para lavarla.

So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard that followed me, none of us put off our clothes, every one that went to the water had his weapon.
