Josué 9

1 Al escuchar la noticia de estas cosas, todos los reyes en el lado oeste del Jordán, en la región montañosa y en las tierras bajas y por el Gran Mar frente al Líbano, los hititas y los amorreos, los cananeos, los ferezeos, los heveos y los jebuseos,

And it came to pass, when all the kings that were on this side of the Jordan, in the mountain, and in the lowlands, and in all the coast of the great sea opposite Lebanon, the Hittites, and the Emorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard this,

2 Se unieron con un propósito, hacer la guerra contra Josué e Israel.

That they assembled themselves all together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 Y los hombres de Gabaón, oyendo lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y Hai,

And when the inhabitants of Gib'on heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto 'Ai,

4 Actuando con engaño, juntaron comida como para un largo viaje; y tomaron viejas bolsas de comida y las pusieron sobre los asnos, y viejas y agrietadas pieles de vino unidas con cordón;

They also did work wilily, and went and feigned to be messengers, and took old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 Y pónganse en sus pies zapatos viejos y remendadas ropas viejas en la espalda; y toda la comida que tenían con ellos estaba seca y descompuesta.

And [put] old and patched-up shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 Y vinieron a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y a los hombres de Israel: Venimos de un país lejano; así que, hagan pacto con nosotros.

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far-off country; and now make ye a covenant with us.

7 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a los heveos: Puede que estén viviendo entre nuestra tierra? ¿Cómo podemos entonces hacer un pacto con ustedes?

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell in the midst of us; and how can we make a covenant with you:

8 Y dijeron a Josué: Nosotros somos tus siervos. Entonces Josué les dijo: ¿Quién eres y de dónde vienes?

And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye!

9 Y le dijeron: Tus siervos han venido de un país muy lejano, por el nombre de él Señor tu Dios; porque la historia de su gran nombre, y de todo lo que hizo en Egipto, ha llegado a nuestros oídos.

And they said unto him, From a very far-off country are thy servants come, because of the name of the Lord thy God; for we have heard his fame, and all that he hath done in Egypt;

10 Y lo que hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos al este del Jordán, a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, en Astarot.

And all that he hath done to the two kings of the Emorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sichon the king of Cheshbon, and to 'Og the king of Bashan, who was at 'Ashtaroth.

11 Así que los hombres responsables y todas las personas de nuestro país nos dijeron: “Llévate comida para el viaje y ve a ellos, y diles: Somos tus sirvientes; así que, pacta con nosotros”.

Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, as followeth, Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, Your servants are we: and now make ye with us a covenant.

12 Este pan que tenemos con nosotros para nuestra comida, lo tomamos cálido y nuevo de nuestras casas cuando comenzamos nuestro viaje hacia ti; pero ahora veamos, se ha secado y se ha roto.

This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and it is become mouldy:

13 Y estas pieles de vino eran nuevas cuando pusimos el vino en ellas, y ahora están agrietadas como ven; y nuestra ropa y nuestros zapatos se han vuelto viejos debido a nuestro largo viaje hasta aquí.

And these wine-bottles, which we filled, when new, — but behold, they are now become rent; and these our garments and our shoes are become worn out by reason of the very long journey.

14 Y los hombres tomaron algo de su comida, sin pedir instrucciones al Señor.

And the men took of their provisions, but the decision of the Lord they did not ask.

15 Entonces Josué hizo la paz con ellos, e hizo un acuerdo con ellos para que no fueran condenados a muerte, y los jefes del pueblo les juraron.

And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the congregation swore unto them.

16 Tres días después, cuando llegaron a un acuerdo con ellos, se enteraron de que estos hombres eran sus vecinos, que vivían cerca de ellos.

And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt in the midst of them.

17 Y los hijos de Israel avanzaron en su viaje, y al tercer día llegaron a sus pueblos. Ahora sus ciudades eran Gabaón y Cafira y Beeroty Quiriat -jearim.

And the children of Israel broke up, and came unto their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gib'on, and Kephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiryath-ye'arim.

18 Y los hijos de Israel no los mataron, porque los jefes del pueblo los habían jurado por el Señor, el Dios de Israel. Y todo el pueblo clamó contra los jefes.

And the children of Israel smote them not; because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord, the God of Israel; but all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 Pero todos los jefes dijeron al pueblo: Les hemos jurado por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, y no podemos ponerles las manos encima.

And all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord the God of Israel: and now we cannot touch them.

20 Esto es lo que les haremos: no los mataremos, por temor a que la ira caiga sobre nosotros por nuestro juramento.

This will we do to them, and we will let them live, that there be no wrath upon us, on account of the oath which we have sworn unto them.

21 Manténgalos vivos, y fueron puestos como sirvientes, cortando madera y obteniendo agua para toda la gente. Y todo el pueblo hizo lo que los jefes les habían dicho.

And the princes said unto them, Let them live: and they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

22 Entonces Josué envió a buscarlos y les dijo: ¿Por qué nos has engañado, diciendo que venían de muy lejos, cuando la verdad viven entre nosotros?

And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you: whereas ye dwell in the midst of us?

23 Ahora, por esto, son malditos, y por siempre serán nuestros siervos, cortando madera y obteniendo agua para la casa de mi Dios.

And now be ye cursed, and there shall not cease to be of you servants and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 Y respondiendo a Josué, dijeron: Porque llegó a oídos de tus siervos que el Señor tu Dios le había ordenado a su siervo Moisés que le daría toda esta tierra y que enviaría destrucción a todas las personas que viven en ella. Así que, temiendo mucho por nuestras vidas, hemos hecho esto.

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God had commanded his servant Moses to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; wherefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and we have done this thing.

25 Y ahora estamos en tus manos: haznos lo que te parezca bien y correcto.

And now, behold, we are in thy hand; as it seemeth good and right in thy eyes to do unto us, so do.

26 Entonces los mantuvo a salvo de los hijos de Israel, y no los dejó morir.

And he did unto them thus; and he delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they slew them not.

27 Y ​​ese día Josué los hizo siervos, cortando leña y recogiendo agua para el pueblo y para el altar del Señor, en el lugar señalado por él, hasta el día de hoy.

And Joshua appointed them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, for the place which he should choose.
