Juan 5
1 Después de estas cosas hubo una fiesta de los judíos, y Jesús subió a Jerusalén.
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem when the Jews were having [another] celebration.
2 Ahora en Jerusalén, cerca del mercado de ovejas, hay un estanque público que en hebreo se llama Betesda. Tiene cinco puertas.
At one of the gates [into the city] called the Sheep Gate, there is a pool. In our language we call it Bethzatha. [Around the pool] were five open areas with roofs over them.
3 En estas puertas había una gran cantidad de personas con diferentes enfermedades: algunas incapaces de ver, otras sin poder caminar, otras con cuerpos tullidos esperando que el agua se moviera.
Many people were lying there. They were people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.
4 Porque un ángel venía al estanque y movía las aguas de vez en cuando y el que primero bajaba al estanque después de agitar el agua sanaba de cualquier enfermedad que tuviese.
5 Había un hombre que había estado enfermo durante treinta y ocho años.
One of those who was there had been paralyzed for 38 years.
6 Cuando Jesús lo vio allí en el piso, le quedó claro que hacía mucho tiempo que estaba en esa condición, y entonces le dijo al hombre: ¿Es tu deseo ser sano?
Jesus saw him lying there and found out that the man had been like that for a long time. He said to the man, “Do you want to become well?”
7 El enfermo dijo en respuesta: “Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque cuando el agua se mueve; y mientras estoy bajando, otra persona entra antes que yo.
The paralyzed man replied to him, “[Yes], sir, [I want to get well, but] there is no one to help me get down into the pool when the water is stirred {stirs}. While I am trying to get [to the pool], someone else always gets there before me.”
8 Jesús le dijo: Levántate, toma tu cama y vete.
Jesus said to him, “Get up! Then pick up your mat and walk!”
9 Y el hombre se enderezó al instante, y tomando su cama, se fue. Ahora ese día era el Sábado.
The man immediately was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking! The day on which this happened was a Jewish day of rest.
10 Entonces los judíos dijeron al hombre que había sido sanado: es el sábado; y es contra la ley cargar tu cama.
So the Jewish [leaders] said to the man who had been healed, “Today is (the Sabbath/our rest day), and [in our Jewish] laws [it is written that people should not work on our] ([Sabbath/rest day]), so you should not be carrying your mat!”
11 Y les dijo: El que me sanó, me dijo: Toma tu cama y vete.
The man replied to them, “The man who healed me, he himself said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’”
12 Entonces le preguntaron: ¿Quién es el hombre que te dijo: recoge tu cama y vete?
They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk!’?”
13 Ahora bien, el que había sido sanado no sabía quién era, porque Jesús se había ido entre la cantidad de gente que estaba en ese lugar.
But since Jesus had disappeared in the crowd [without telling the man his name], the man did not know who it was [who had healed him].
14 Después de un tiempo, Jesús se encontró con él en el templo y le dijo: Mira, tú has sido sanado; no peques más por miedo a que te llegue algo peor.
Later, Jesus found the man in the Temple [courtyard]. He [told the man his name, and] said to him, “Listen! You are healed! So stop sinning! If you do not stop sinning, something will happen to you that will be worse [than the illness you had before]!”
15 El hombre se fue y dijo a los judíos que era Jesús quien lo había sanado.
The man went away and told the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16 Y por esta razón, los judíos se volvieron contra Jesús y lo perseguían, porque él estaba haciendo estas cosas en el día de reposo.
So the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] started to harass Jesus, because Jesus was doing these things (on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day).
17 Pero su respuesta fue: Mi Padre todavía está trabajando, y también yo estoy trabajando.
Then Jesus replied to them, “My Father has always been working every day, [including] ([the Sabbath/the day of rest]), up until now. I am doing the same thing!”
18 Por esta causa, los judíos tenían un mayor deseo de matar a Jesús, porque no solo no guardaba el sábado sino que decía que Dios era su Padre, haciéndose igual a Dios.
The Jewish leaders [SYN] considered that he was disobeying their rules about (the Sabbath/the day of rest), and that by saying that God was his Father, he was making himself equal with God. And they considered that both these things were grounds for killing him. So they tried even harder to find a way to kill him.
19 Respondió Jesús y dijo: De cierto les digo, que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo; él es capaz de hacer solo lo que ve hacer al Padre; todo lo que el Padre hace, el Hijo lo hace de la misma manera.
Jesus replied to them by saying, “You need to know this: I can do nothing by my own [authority]. I do only the [kind of] things that I see [my] Father doing. Whatever kinds of things my Father is doing, those are the things I am doing.
20 Porque el Padre tiene amor por el Hijo y le permite ver todo lo que hace, y le permitirá ver obras más grandes que estas para que puedas estar lleno de asombro.
[My] Father loves me, and he shows me everything that he is doing. He will show me [the miracles] that [he wants me to do] that will be greater than the ones that [you have already seen me do], so that you may be amazed.
21 De la misma manera, como el Padre a los muertos resucita y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a aquellos a quienes él se complace en darle.
[For example], just like [my] Father causes people who have died to become alive again, I will give [eternal] life to everyone that I want to.
22 El Padre no juzga a los hombres, sino que ha dado toda la autoridad de juzgar al Hijo;
Furthermore, [my] Father is not the one who judges people [concerning their sins]. Instead, he has given to me the work of judging people,
23 Para que todos los hombres le den honor al Hijo, así como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo no honra al Padre que lo envió.
in order that all people may honor me, just like they honor [my] Father. [My] Father [considers that] anyone who does not honor me is not honoring [him], the one who sent me.
24 En verdad les digo, el hombre cuyos oídos están abiertos a mi palabra y que tiene fe en el que me envió, tiene vida eterna; él no será juzgado, sino que ha venido de la muerte a la vida. (aiōnios g166)
Listen to this carefully: Those who hear my message and believe that [God] is the one who sent me have eternal life. [God will] not (condemn them/say that he will punish them). They are no longer separated from God. Instead, they have [eternal] life. (aiōnios g166)
25 De cierto, de cierto les digo, que viene el tiempo, y ahora ha venido, cuando la voz del Hijo de Dios vendrá a oídos de los muertos, y los que la oigan tendrán vida.
Listen to this carefully: There will be a time when those who are (spiritually dead/separated from God) will hear the voice of me, (the Son of God/the man who is also God). In fact, it is that time already. Those who hear [and pay attention to my message] will have [eternal] life.
26 Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también le ha dado al Hijo tener vida en sí mismo.
[My] Father has [power to] make things live. Similarly, he has given me the [power to enable] people to live [eternally].
27 Y le ha dado autoridad para ser juez, porque él es el Hijo del hombre.
Because I am the one who came from heaven, he has given me the authority to judge people [concerning their sins].
28 No se sorprendan de esto: porque vendrá tiempo cuando su voz vendrá a todos los que están en el lugar de los muertos,
Do not be surprised about that, because there will be a time when all people who have died will hear my voice,
29 y saldrán; aquellos que han hecho el bien, en la nueva vida; y los que hicieron mal, para ser juzgados.
and they will become alive again. Those who have lived good [lives] will rise [from their graves] and live forever. But those who have lived evil lives will rise, and I will (condemn them/declare that I will punish them [for their sins]).
30 Por mí mismo no puedo hacer nada: como la voz viene a mí, así tomó una decisión; y mi decisión es correcta porque no tengo ningún deseo de hacer lo que me agrada a mí mismo, sino sólo lo que es agradable para el que me envió.
I do not do anything [like that] by my own authority. I judge people only according to what I hear [my Father tell me]. I will judge people fairly, because I do not want to please only myself. Instead, I want to please [my Father], who sent me.
31 Si diera testimonio sobre mí mismo, mi testimonio no sería cierto.
If I were the [only] one to tell people about myself, [people could rightly say that] what I say is not true.
32 Hay otro que da testimonio sobre mí y estoy seguro de que el testimonio que da de mí es verdad.
But there is someone else who tells people about me. And I know that what he tells people about me is true.
33 Enviaste a preguntar a Juan y él dio testimonio verdadero.
As for you, when you sent messengers to John [the Baptizer to ask about me], he told the truth [about me].
34 Pero no necesito el testimonio de un hombre: solo digo estas cosas para que tengan salvación.
I do not [need that] people tell others [about me]. But instead, I am reminding [you about what John told people about me], in order that you will [believe it and] be saved {[God] will save you}.
35 Él era una luz ardiente y brillante, y durante un tiempo estuvieron listos para ser feliz en su luz.
[John’s message about me] (OR, [John]) [MET] was [like] a lamp that shines brightly. For a short while you were willing to be made happy [by that message] {to let [that message] make you happy}.
36 Pero el testimonio que tengo es mayor que el de Juan: la obra que el Padre me ha dado para hacer, la misma obra que ahora estoy haciendo, es un testimonio que el Padre me ha enviado.
But there is something else that tells you about me. [It should prove who I am] more than what John [said about me]. The miracles [PRS] that [my] Father told me to do, the miracles that I am performing, show (OR, prove) to people that my Father sent me.
37 Y el Padre mismo que me envió dio testimonio de mí. Ninguno de ustedes ha escuchado su voz alguna vez; ni lo han visto.
Furthermore, [my] Father, who sent me, tells people about me. You have never heard his voice or seen him.
38 Y no han guardado su palabra en sus corazones, porque no tienen fe en aquel a quien él ha enviado.
Furthermore, you have not believed in [me], the one he sent. So you have not [believed] his message in your inner beings.
39 Hacen búsqueda en las Sagradas Escrituras, en la creencia de que a través de ellas obtienes la vida eterna; y son esas Escrituras las que dan testimonio sobre mí. (aiōnios g166)
You carefully study (OR, Study) the Scriptures, because you think that by [studying] them you will [find the way to] have eternal life. And those Scriptures tell people about me! (aiōnios g166)
40 Y todavía no desean venir a mí para que tengan vida.
But you refuse (to come to me/to believe my message) in order that you may have [eternal] life.
41 No tomo el honor de los hombres;
It does not [matter to] me whether people praise me.
42 Pero tengo conocimiento de ustedes que no tienen amor por Dios en sus corazones.
But you [want people to praise you]. I know that within yourselves you do not love God.
43 He venido en nombre de mi Padre, y sus corazones no están abiertos para mí. Si otro llega sin otra autoridad que él mismo, le darán su aprobación.
Although I have come to earth with my Father’s authority [MTY], you do not accept me. But if someone else comes with his own authority [MTY], you accept him!
44 ¿Cómo es posible que tengan fe mientras toman el honor el uno del otro y no desean el honor que proviene del único Dios?
You accept your praising each other, but you do not try to do things that will result in God himself praising you. So (there is no way you can believe [in me]!/how can you believe [my message]?) [RHQ]
45 Quiten de su mente la idea de que diré cosas en su contra al Padre: el que dice cosas en su contra es Moisés, en quien confían.
But do not think that I am the one who will accuse you while [my] Father is listening! No, it is Moses who will accuse you! You thought that he would [defend you].
46 Si tuvieran fe en Moisés, tendrían fe en mí; porque sus escritos son sobre mí.
Moses wrote about me, so if you had believed what he [wrote], you would have believed what I [said]
47 Si no creen en sus escritos, ¿cómo creerá en mis palabras?
But because you did not believe what he wrote [about me], (you will certainly not believe what I say!/how will you believe what I say?) [RHQ]”
