Jeremías 40

1 La palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, después de que Nabuzaradán, el capitán de la guardia real, lo dejó ir a Ramá, cuando lo liberó; porque lo habían encadenado, entre todos los prisioneros de Jerusalén y Judá que fueron llevados a Babilonia.

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, hath sent him from Ramah, in his taking him — and he a prisoner in chains — in the midst of all the removal of Jerusalem and of Judah, who are removed to Babylon.

2 Entonces el capitán de la guardia real tomó a Jeremías y le dijo: Él Señor tu Dios dio palabra del mal que vendría en este lugar.

And the chief of the executioners taketh Jeremiah, and saith unto him, 'Jehovah thy God hath spoken this evil concerning this place,

3 Y el Señor lo cumplió, y ha hecho lo que dijo; porque ustedes pecaron contra el Señor al no escuchar su voz; Y es por eso que esta cosa ha venido sobre ti.

and Jehovah bringeth [it] in, and doth as He spake, because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened to His voice, even this thing hath been to you.

4 Ahora, mira, este día te estoy liberando de las cadenas que tienes en tus manos. Si te parece bien que vengas conmigo a Babilonia, entonces ven y te vigilaré; pero si no te parece bien venir conmigo a Babilonia, entonces no vengas; mira, toda la tierra está delante de ti; si te parece bien, sigue viviendo en donde más te convenga.

'And now, lo, I have loosed thee to-day from the chains that [are] on thy hand; if good in thine eyes to come with me [to] Babylon, come, and I keep mine eye upon thee: and if evil in thine eyes to come with me to Babylon, forbear; see, all the land [is] before thee, whither [it be] good, and whither [it be] right in thine eyes to go — go.' —

5 Luego regresa a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, a quien el rey de Babilonia ha nombrado gobernador sobre las ciudades de Judá, y haz tu lugar de convivencia con él entre el pueblo; O ve a donde te parezca bien ir. Así que el capitán de la guardia real le dio comida y algo de dinero y lo dejó ir.

and while he doth not reply — 'Or turn back unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people, or whithersoever it is right in thine eyes to go — go.' And the chief of the executioners giveth to him for the way, and a gift, and sendeth him away,

6 Jeremías fue a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, en Mizpa, y vivía con él entre la gente que todavía estaba en la tierra.

and Jeremiah cometh in unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelleth with him, in the midst of the people who are left in the land.

7 Cuando llegó a oídos de todos los capitanes de las fuerzas que estaban en el campo y de sus hombres, que el rey de Babilonia había hecho a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, gobernante de la tierra, y había puesto bajo su cuidado, los hombres, las mujeres y los niños, todos los más pobres de la tierra, los que no habían sido llevados a Babilonia;

And all the heads of the forces that [are] in the field hear, they and their men, that the king of Babylon hath appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land, and that he hath charged him [with] men, and women, and infants, and of the poor of the land, of those who have not been removed to Babylon;

8 Entonces vinieron a Gedalías en Mizpa, a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y Johanán, hijo de Carea, Seraías, hijo de Tanhumet, los hijos de Efai, de la Netofa, y a Jezania, hijo de Maacat, ellos y sus hombres.

and they come in unto Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan sons of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maachathite, they and their men.

9 Y Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, les hizo un juramento a ellos y a sus hombres, diciendo: No tengan temor de someterse a los caldeos; sigan viviendo en la tierra y sean siervos del rey de Babilonia, y todo estará bien.

And swear to them doth Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, and to their men, saying, 'Be not afraid of serving the Chaldeans, abide in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it is well for you;

10 En cuanto a mí, viviré en Mizpa como tu representante ante los caldeos que vienen a nosotros; pero ustedes recojan en sus vasijas vino, frutas de verano y aceite, y habiten en los pueblos que han tomado.

and I, lo, I am dwelling in Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who are come in unto us, and ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruit, and oil, and put in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.'

11 De la misma manera, cuando todos los judíos que estaban en Moab y entre los hijos de Amón y en Edom y en todos los países, tuvieron noticias de que el rey de Babilonia había dejado que Judá se quedara con algunos de sus habitantes y que él había puesto sobre ellos a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán;

And also all the Jews who [are] in Moab, and among the sons of Ammon, and in Edom, and who [are] in all the lands, have heard that the king of Babylon hath given a remnant to Judah, and that he hath appointed over them Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan,

12 Entonces todos los judíos regresaron de todos los lugares a los que habían ido en vuelo y llegaron a la tierra de Judá, a Gedalías, en Mizpa, y recogieron en gran abundancia vino y frutas de verano.

and all the Jews from all the places whither they have been driven, turn back and enter the land of Judah, unto Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and they gather wine and summer fruit — very much.

13 Entonces Johanan, el hijo de Carea, y todos los capitanes de las fuerzas que estaban en el campo, llegaron a Gedalías en Mizpa,

And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the heads of the forces that [are] in the field, have come in unto Gedaliah to Mizpah,

14 Y le dijo: ¿Sabes que Baalis, el rey de los hijos de Amón, ha enviado a Ismael, el hijo de Netanías, para que te quiten la vida? Pero Gedalías, el hijo de Ahicam, no confiaba en lo que decían.

and they say unto him, 'Dost thou really know that Baalis king of the sons of Ammon hath sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to smite thy soul?' And Gedaliah son of Ahikam hath not given to them credence.

15 Entonces Johanán, el hijo de Carea, le dijo a Gedalías en Mizpa en secreto: Déjame ir ahora a matar a Ismael, el hijo de Netanias, sin que nadie lo sepa; ¿por qué te ha de quitar tu vida para que todos los judíos que se han reunido a ustedes a tu alrededor sean dispersados para hacerlos huir, y el resto de los hombres de Judá llegan a su fin?

And Johanan son of Kareah hath spoken unto Gedaliah in secret, in Mizpah, saying, 'Let me go, I pray thee, and I smite Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one doth know; why doth he smite thy soul? and scattered have been all Judah who are gathered unto thee, and perished hath the remnant of Judah.'

16 Pero Gedalías, el hijo de Ahicam, le dijo a Johanan, el hijo de Carea: No debes hacer esto; porque lo que dices acerca de Ismael es falso.

And Gedaliah son of Ahikam saith unto Johanan son of Kareah, 'Thou dost not do this thing, for falsehood thou art speaking concerning Ishmael.'
