Eclesiastés 4
1 Y nuevamente vi todas las cosas crueles que se hacen bajo el sol; estaba el llanto de aquellos que les habían hecho mal, y no tenían consolador; y de las manos de los malvados estaba el poder, pero no tenían consolador.
I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.
2 Mi alabanza fue para los muertos que han ido a su muerte, más que para los vivos que aún tienen vida.
And I praised the dead rather than the living:
3 Sí, más feliz que los muertos o los vivos parecía el que nunca ha estado, que no ha visto el mal que se hace bajo el sol.
And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.
4 Y vi que la causa de todo el trabajo y de todo lo que está bien hecho era la envidia del hombre al prójimo. Esto de nuevo es para ningún propósito y aflicción de espíritu.
Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.
5 El hombre necio, doblando sus manos, toma la carne de su propio cuerpo para comer.
The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:
6 Una mano llena de descanso es mejor que dos manos llenas de problemas y aflicción de espíritu.
Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.
7 Luego volví y vi un ejemplo de lo que no tiene propósito bajo el sol.
Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:
8 Es aquel que está solo, sin sucesor, y sin hijo o hermano; pero no hay fin a todo su trabajo, y él nunca tiene suficiente riqueza. ¿Para quién, entonces, estoy trabajando y manteniéndome del placer? Esto de nuevo no tiene ningún propósito, y es un trabajo amargo.
There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.
9 Dos son mejores que uno, porque tienen una buena recompensa por su trabajo.
It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:
10 Y si uno tiene una caída, el otro le dará una mano; pero infeliz es el hombre que está solo, porque no tiene ayudante.
If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.
11 De nuevo, si dos están durmiendo juntos, son cálidos, pero ¿cómo puede uno ser cálido por sí mismo?
And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?
12 Y dos atacados por uno estarían a salvo, y tres cuerdas torcidas juntas no se rompen rápidamente.
And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.
13 Un joven que es pobre y sabio es mejor que un rey que es viejo e insensato y no será guiado por la sabiduría de los demás.
Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.
14 Porque de la prisión el joven viene a ser rey, aunque al nacer solo era un hombre pobre en el reino.
Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.
15 Vi a todos los que vivían bajo el sol alrededor del joven que iba a ser gobernante en lugar del rey.
I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.
16 No hubo fin de todas las personas, de todos aquellos cuya cabeza era, pero los que vengan después no se deleitarán en él. Esto de nuevo no tiene ningún propósito y es aflicción de espíritu.
The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
